I don't know anything about drugs, and when I see young drug addicts on the street without teeth that's enough to convince me to never try it. I'm sorry for your loss. My co-worker lost her 19 year old son to drug use.

Ok, I am going to go against the grain here and say yes, it is possible for people to use (or have used) drugs and not become addicts, in the same way some people can have a cocktail or glass of wine or two and not become an alcoholic.
I am a child of the 70's. I and most of my friends experimented with many drugs in the late 70's and early 80's. Thankfully, among my group of friends, none of us formed addictions.
I have some cousins who became drug addicts, and contracted HIV because of it.
If you are a person with an addictive personality and get snared by drugs.... the consequences are awful So, I don't think using casually is worth that risk.
ETA: I am terribly sorry for your loss. My sympathies go out to all who loved him.
