I saw a dr yesterday due to a chronic cough. I didn't really get any answers about the cough yet but was told that my hemoglobin is low and they wanted me to follow up with my pcp, who is my Ob/Gyn. His office emailed today and said they want to do an ultrasound to see if I have fibroids, as well as some more bloodwork. I just checked my online medical chart and among the tests is a pregnancy test. I see that he also ordered one last year after I was there for my physical as well as another health issue later in the year when I also talked about fatigue, heavy periods, etc. I have had my tubes tied. I'm curious how common it is to have a pregnancy after a tubal, since he seems to be ordering pregnancy tests quite often for me. Or has he forgotten/doesn't realize that I have had a tubal ligation?

I think some doctors just do it as a matter of course.

No help but I'm hoping not common at all!
I had an ectopic pregnancy April 2015. Lost my right tube.
Had my 2nd (and hopefully last) baby March 2016 and had my other tube tied. I'm done done done. Hopefully the tubal is 100%.

They like to check and be sure you're not (or are). This way if they need to give you meds they'll know if it's safe to do so.

I'm also having an ultrasound so it seems that would be more accurate than a pregnancy test at determining if I am pregnant? And the ultrasound needs to be scheduled when I get my next period...

When I signed the consent for my tubal I had to acknowledge a small chance of a pregnancy occurring. That part was highlighted and written in red and a special place for me to sign. Save

He probably checks because there is always a very small chance. My aunt was pregnant with my niece during 3-4 months of her chemo for thyroid cancer and her dr had told her she would never be able to have kids! They never checked (of course that was 30+ years ago). But better safe than sorry.

My sister-in-law got pregnant after a tubal. She had her two kids by 22 and had a tubal after deliver #2. 10 years later she got pregnant and was excited, but it was a ectopic pregnancy.

There's gotta be some racket between doctors and pregnancy test companies.
Just kidding! I know it's a high-stakes situation. But yeah, the number of pregnancy tests the average woman has to take in her medical life is insane.

I know it can happen but I think it is odd that he is requesting so many pregnancy tests, especially now with the ulta sound being done as well. Oh well at least it isn't an invasive test.

wow, 1 in 200 is pretty common! I wouldn't consider that much of a pregnancy prevention at that rate. :/

My doctor does pregnancy test before my depo shot even though I have tied tubes. It's just a precaution.

I think it is very common to order a pregnancy test before any kind of procedure regardless of having a tubal or not. It is probably just a standard order based on the codes placed for the tests you are getting and it isn't tailored exactly to your tubal situation.

I have often joked about the same thing! lol I am not aware of any pregnancy tests after I had my tubes tied and ablation done, but I just may not have noticed. And after my hysterectomy the point is moot!

He hasn't forgotten, and I don't think pregnancy after a tubal is all that common. Pregnancy tests for women of child bearing age is just the standard during any medical testing. They have to rule it out. One, because the test is so easy and non invasive to do. And two, because they have to make sure you aren't pregnant before giving any medications that could cause complications during pregnancy.

I think medical community across the board test just to be sure the is no possibility the patient is pregnant. And I would think ectopic pregnancy could be a concern. I have had two ectopics (prior to tubal) and it was pretty scary. Everytime I have had surgery they have done one even though my tubes are tied. I asked the nurse how often they have had once come up positive and she said 2x. Both of course very shocking to the patient.

wow, 1 in 200 is pretty common! I wouldn't consider that much of a pregnancy prevention at that rate. :/ That is my feelings a well. And it's one of the reasons I opted against a tubal. I have had other things happen in my life (medically speaking) that were far less common than that, so the tubal failure odds sounded pretty lousy to me. (And I have heard other different percentages mentioned as well, but none of them made it seem like a rare thing to me.) Save

I got pregnant after my tubal and I was on birth control pills at the time to control my periods what were out of control since the tubal. Talk about a shocker.

I can imagine how shocked you were when learning you were pregnant.

I had an ectopic pregnancy in June of 1991 and I'm pretty sure they tested me to make sure that the pregnancy hormones were gone. Unfortunately for us, three months later I miscarried another pregnancy.

The percentage they had on the paperwork was .3% so your figures are in the same ballpark. Save

Failure rate varies with technique used and whether or not it was done postpartum. The highest failure rate is when the procedure is done postpartum.
To answer another question. No, an ultrasound is not more accurate than a serum pregnancy test.

My cousin's wife got pregnant after having her tubes tied. She was in her early 30s. She had just had twins, so her family grew to 4. She said she was done. The twins are now 4 and she has a 1.5 year old. It's rare, but it does happen.
