Hi "peas"- I know that a lot of you have "been there, done that" in going back to work after a long absence, and now I'm in that boat. I've had my own startup for the past 3 years and I've also done some consulting, but I need to bring in a steady paycheck and hopefully benefits. Of course, I feel such anxiety at undertaking this and have been putting off working on my resume and getting back out there. It seems so daunting and overwhelming!! I feel like I have nothing to show and that no one will want to hire me. How have you gotten past this feeling? Any tips to get me motivated would be appreciated! Virtual hugs too

I don't have any tips on how to go about this, just wanted to wish you lots of good luck. I can imagine how overwhelming that might feel. I hope it all works out well for you.

I don't have much advise, other than try to get a good night's sleep and have a positive attitude. I get anxious in new situations so I try not to dwell on things too much beforehand. I'll read to occupy my mind so I don't get too anxious. Xanax helps, too!

It's a confidence game. You have marketable skills, market them! Then get a super business-savvy suite or dress, get your hair done, do your makeup up a bit and go for it.
If YOU think you're worth the effort, they will too! Go get'em!

I'm in much the same boat and totally empathize. Anxiety is such a killer! I like Miz I"s approach. I just read a book on conquering anxiety, and it said you overcome it by doing the things that make you anxious. I find it pretty hard to do anything when I am dealing with all the symptoms of a full on panic attack, though.
Don't sell yourself short, that's all I can offer.

You eat an elephant one bite at a time.
Make a list of the steps. And get started. It seems overwhelming because you are looking at the overall picture. That picture is really just comprised of a bunch of small steps. So write down all those small steps... and start doing them.

Agree with Spongemom - break it down so it's not so daunting then you'll be able to see yourself achieving things as you go along. You'll be fine!!

Went through this this past year. I left teaching in '00 to stay home with the kids, in 05 I opened up my own little preschool which was great, closed it in '11 to move overseas while there though in "13/14 school year, i went back into the regular classroom/school setting.
I had not interviewed since my last full time position in '98 and had only 36 hours notice (fell in my lap) and I was so unprepared and sick to my stomach. The principal asked me questions and I froze as though I had never been in a classroom before let alone owned my own school! Thank goodness he saw something and thankful for my references!!
I felt SO rusty, clumsy, insecure and overwhelmed when I started. When I thought too much about it, I froze but when I let it go, closed my door and let my instincts and experience take over I had a great time and overall had a very successful year AND was asked back for this year.
I am still nervous to start again next week but excited as well. Just keep the fact that "I can so do this" in the front of your head. I WOULD suggest though finding someone in the same field to practice interviewing. Have them shoot you questions, make you squirm then you will be ready for anything!
Good luck

Right there with you. I'm getting ready to start the job search after 14 years myself. I'm extremely anxious about it. Partly because it's not something I really want to do--it's something I have to do.

I don't have any tips...just it does get easier. I was horribly anxious when I went back to work after 11 years...but it went well and I am now happy (15 years later) that I did it.
Good luck.

Good luck! I'm in the same place you are. I've been substitute teaching for four years, but it was an easy process. I filled in the aplication and I had the job. They will take everyone who passes the background check. You prove yourself in the classroom. Anyway, it has always been a very part time job for me and I need to go back to work full time. I'm really stressing about the job search. I was able to push it back three months because I needed to be home this summer, but I can't put it off anymore. I have to find a job in September. It's very stressful.
