My 16 year old son has been diagnosed with a unicameral bone cyst in his upper right femur. It's roughly 5 x 6 cm. It was discovered on accident during an xray for a football injury (strained groin muscle). A subsequent MRI confirmed the diagnosis and we've been referred to an orthopedic surgeon, with an appointment set for August 8th and directions of no physical activity until then.
It's mentally and physically straining for my son. He has battled a back injury, due to football and after lots of rehab was finally back on track to play this year. He kept up with football and physical therapy all summer only to find out about this during the last week of practice.
We know football takes 2nd place to being a healthy teenager but I just feel bad for him as he is struggling with the unknown right now. He just wants to get the next Dr. appt. over with so he has an idea of what comes next.
Has anyone had experience with this type of bone cyst? We've all googled enough to learn the facts about it, but I am wondering if anyone has some personal experience?
Thanks!

My husband had a bone cyst in his wrist that was found on an xray after an injury. Basically, there is a lack of bone in that area. It usually doesn't cause any problems and isn't noticed until you have an xray for something else. For my husband, he did have surgery to fill the area. I believe they can use bone from the patient or they can use cadaver bone.
I'm not sure if they treat every cyst with surgery though. I know it sounds scary, but it is less serious than it sounds. Hugs!

I have a bone cyst in my leg (also discovered by accident), but I was told that unless it was symptomatic to leave it alone. I'm sure that advice has much to do with size, location, and even age of the patient. I hope that the surgeon gives you good news.

My brother had a bone cyst also. He was about 16 yrs old. In his thigh also. It was removed by surgery. He ended up with quite a large long scar, but it healed over well. It's been, hmmm..30 yrs now, and it doesn't bother him. Nothing else has ever come of it, and he went on to have a very active, full life so far.

My friends daughter broke her leg playing soccer. Two years later she broke her leg in the same spot due to a bone cyst - apparently the original break did not heal properly. The second break was much more serious and required surgery to repair the break with plates and pins. If they say no contact, they really do mean no contact.

Thank you everyone for the details. I think the unknown is definitely scarier than the known so I appreciate all of the personal experiences.
