I have had this faint line on my thumbnail for a few years, possibly 2 or 3. It runs vertically, right in the center of my right thumbnail. The nailbed is also slightly darker than the nail beds of any of my other fingers. I have never injured that thumb, no pain and really never paid attention to it until I noticed that it seems to have widened a bit. I decided to Google at 3 AM because I couldn't sleep(I know, I know...worst mistake ever) and subungual melanoma(sp?) keeps popping up. I already have an appointment on August 16th with a dermatologist. I swear Googling any medical condition is like playing 6 degrees of separation with cancer.
Anybody have any experience with something like this?
I just turned 40, am Puerto Rican (read that this is more common in African Americans) and olive skin tone (so not very dark skinned)

I've not come across that but nail beds can get injured pretty easily and you may have hurt it without really noticing or paying attention. Or maybe it was the cuticle area where the nail actually grow from. I'm sure it's nothing but good idea to mention it at your upcoming appt to be on the safe side

I have no experience with what you are describing but since it is bothering you and it appears to be changing, it sounds like you are doing the exact right thing and getting it looked at. Stop googling. That is scary and soon enough you will have the doc give you peace of mind

I had a light black line on my thumb for several years. I had no idea what it was either. Eventually, it went away so I can't help you there but curious to see what your doctor says.

I had the same kind of line across by big toenail. For 2 years maybe... I finally went to the Dr and it turned out to be a toenail fungus. He said it would never get better on its own and I got an RX for some anti fungal. It's such a low dose I have to take it 3 mo.
