I accidentally laid the back of my hand and two fingers against the side of my crockpot yesterday while washing the counter and realized today that I have several large blisters! It hurt and I commented at the time that it was much hotter than I would have thought it would be, but I never would have thought it was hot enough to cause the blistering it has.
Is yours really hot on the outside? I'm curious if mine is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced?

Mine gets super hot. I don't put it directly onto the counter. I have to put pot holders under it.

I just used mine yesterday and indeed it gets hot but not exceedingly hot. the element is in the metal after all.

My old one did. And it always burned food. I just googled the model number one day and found out that it had a recall for an over heating problem. Seriously, a recipe called for low heat for 8 hours and my food would be burnt to a crisp after 3 hours. Since I could never use it for it's intended use I finally just gave up and only used it every now and again if I was home since I didn't want to burn the house down.
Even though I finally got a new one and threw that one away, I still have never gotten into the habit of using it. So it sits, relegated to the back of the pantry.

I don't think mine would cause a blister. It's the kind with a removable crock. Watch out, we'll use this as an opportunity to woo you to the InstaPot cult!

It's stainless on the outside. I feel a little ridiculous. I was driving home from work and caught sight of my pinky when I was turning the corner and thought "what the heck is on my hand?!" thinking there was a glob of something that needed to be washed off. Um no...that IS my hand! It's about half the size of a dime on the second knuckle of my pinky, a small spot on the first knuckle of my pinky, about the size of pencil eraser on my ring finger and a red burned spot without a blister on the side of my hand. I got myself good! Fortunately it doesn't really bother me today. I'm SO not a kitchen gadget person...but I might be tempted if I have a killer crockpot in the cupboard. SaveSave

My old one always gets hot to the touch, but not dangerously so. You might want to replace yours. That sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
I haven't gotten to use my new one yet. It had better not or I'm going to be ticked. I just bought the All Clad crock pot with the cast aluminum insert on a flash sale. It's supposed to be super nice and super good, so if it overheats I'm sending that sucker back.

Mine gets hot on the outside too but not hot enough to burn and leave blisters from a brief contact. It sounds like you should consider replacing yours.

Ouch, mine gets pretty hot but not enough to blister!! And it does not have a removable insert.. The crockpot is about 50 years old.. it was my dh grandmother's crockpot. I swear it will last me a lifetime!

Yes, and I hate it. We've never been burned bad enough to blister (yikes!) but the whole corner area of the kitchen heats up when we use the thing, which kind of defeats the purpose of not using the oven or heating up the kitchen in the summer I need to get busy learning how to use my new Instant Pot!

Ok. It's in the trash. Yesterday DD came over to where the crockpot was and said "Why is it so hot in here..is the air working right?" I bet it was the crockpot! Sigh. All right you enablers. What do I need to know about the Instant Pot thingy? (as an aside, we bought all new appliances a couple months ago and switched from electric to a gas range. Except that we don't have gas and have had a hell of a time getting everything coordinated to have the gas and the range hooked up at the same time. They say it will all be hooked up and working by Wednesday. Past history warns me to not hold my breath. I really need ONE kind of cooking device in this house!) SaveSave

Kerri W , check out elaine's weekly Instant Pot threads. I just bought mine on Amazon a couple of weeks ago on Prime Day, but haven't even touched it b/c my son was home visiting from Asia. He left yesterday, so it's time for me to get going and learn how to use it! I cannot wait to throw the crockpot out! I've also been seeing lots of Instant Pots pins on Pinterest, so that might be worth a look, too.

I'm glad you tossed it, mine has a removable ceramic crock inside and the outside walls never get hot enough to cause burns like that. On a related note, I'm loving my shiny new Instant Pot! We made fall off the bone BBQ ribs in ours tonight and even my skeptical DH was impressed. So good!
We bought a rack of St. Louis ribs that were pre-rubbed with seasonings from Costco (which was too big for it all to fit in at once). I added a half cup of water, chopped up the ribs to fit, cooked for 35 minutes in the Instant Pot and DH finished them up outside on the grill for a few minutes. As soon as the first 2/3 of the rack was cooked in the pot, I put the rest in and turned it back on to cook up the rest. It went a lot quicker for the second go round because the pot was already hot to start with.
We've bought and made these exact ribs three times now, twice on the grill alone and now this time in the Instant Pot, and I have to say the pressure cooked ones were much more tender and tasted better. They were far and away the best.

I'm glad you got rid of it. It sounds like it was on the way out.
Oops, almost forgot to add, I hope your hand gets better quickly.

It gets hot but not that hot. You might check with the manufacturer of your particular brand to see if that is normal.
