As I was typing the other thread that I just started (the "To Kill a Mockingbird" one) I noticed that the ad on top of the page was for the Container Store -- "Dorm Sweet Dorm" it says. So my question is how the heck did it know that dd and I have planned a trip to that store today for some last things for her dorm?? And no, I didn't google the store, not even once. We have one right near us so I don't need to google for hours or location. [insert Twilight Zone music]

Some sites use your computer cookies to target ads. You may not have googled that store but you likely have searched for something college related like text books or been emailed by a .edu address. Also, it may simply be random ads you just happened to notice that one because it does so closely pertain to your activities right now.. but how many millions of people are headed off to college this fall? It is the time of year that is on a lot of people's "to do" list so simple odds make it a "target" ad.

Even though I know how it works it does make me feel unsettled when I see things pop up related to something I was just looking for.

My younger son, who just turned 16, has been furiously googling cars (because he has a crazy idea that someone is going to buy him one ) In all fairness, he has been looking at less expensive cars (relatively speaking-its still a CAR.) Anyway, I am getting a ton of automobile ads...but not for inexpensive starter cars, but the grown up, suburban mom cars-it's like google knows that a kid is looking for a car, so show the mom the pretty mercedes and she will buy that instead and hand the old car down. Google is smart. Scary smart.

I do understand (vaguely anyway, lol) about how cookies work. And of course I've googled college stuff. lol. We've rented books from Chegg, and googled bunches of things on Amazon, and searched the Bed, Bath and Beyond site. So we're a natural target. It was just spooky how an ad popped up for the exact store that we were planning to visit today. And, it was a last-minute decision to go there today, so the computer ghosts didn't have much time to think about it. lolol.

I had a weird one happen yesterday. I clicked on the button up top to send a private message to someone. I started typing and a video popped up. It would not let me out of it until it was complete. First time I have had that happen.

It is a bit scary. I watch a lot of true crime shows and it's quite unsettling to realize just how 'trackable' we are.

I just had one for Scott toilet paper. I know I haven't visited their website. But I do buy Scott brand.
