We've had our Meeks for a little over a year. We use buy the food the lady from the rescue place fed her (Nutro Ultra Small Breed).
I don't think she cares for it. She picks at it and some days needs to be coaxed to eat it. Some days she just will leave it until the next day (though if she thinks you might give her people food she's all over you, though we only occasionally, say a few times a week, give her a tiny bit of meat or cheese as treats). My sister watched her for 2.5 weeks while we were on vacation and Meeks kept stealing food from my sister's dog's bowls and refused to eat her own. My sister feeds her dogs Purina something and I understand that Purina is not considered a high quality food so I don't want to try that.
Any recommendations for a food that is good for small dogs AND that they enjoy?

I recently had to change Stella's food and am now feeding her Taste of the Wild lamb. She seems to really like it. I free feed her and she eats whenever she wants. Some days she eats a whole bowl full and some days she doesn't eat at all. She's been like that since she was a small pup and she's at a healthy weight. I don't worry about it. Some days I eat more than others too, I think it's natural.

we use Science Diet small bites. Even the big dog eats it so it must be pretty good.

My Maltese eats Fromm grain free dry food. I change up the flavor each time I buy a new bag.

Thanks for the recommendations.
I guess some days she might not be as hungry. I just always thought most dogs got super excited at feeding time/would wake you in the morning for food. I put her food out in the AM and she never wakes hungry or tries to get us up to feed her (play yes, eat no).

Remy the killer Shih Tzu is about 5.5 now and he's never been a big eater. We've changed his food a few times over the years and now he's on the Blue Buffalo. Kinda pricy, but he eats like a bird. We leave food out all the time, he's not a run to eat when you put it down dog. We were surprised, but there are some days when he won't eat any food.

Yes but not dog food and she's never tried to get me up to feed her. That's why I free feed her so that when she is hungry there's food in her dish.

We have a medium sized dog and use the food that the breeder recommended. His coat is so smooth it's amazing. I think it's because of the food. I did some research and compared various dog foods. It's surprising how much crap regular name brand dog foods put in their kibble. Here is a useful link to researching dog food: Dog Food Advisor

I feed my shih tzu Sweet Potato and Chicken Formula Dry Dog by Natural Balance. Like Kathy, I leave food out and she just grazes, however when she does eat, she cleans out bowl! I get it on Amazon and it comes highly recommended.

Our Shittypoo, as dh calls her, eats Taste of the Wild. I buy it in the 50 lb bags from Amazon and they last 3-4 months. I switch the flavor each time. We free feed her. I'd say she eats a third of a cup daily. She also only drinks filtered water and has a lively coat and no staining around her eyes.

When we first got our malti-poo from the rescue, he gobbled his food (the woman fed him that Rachel Ray garbage) because he came from a foster home with another dog and a cat. He had to eat or starve. As he got comfortable in our home, he stopped eating so much and now he will go sometimes a day without eating much. We went out of town and he didn't eat at my sisters. She got nervous and hand fed him. I told her that he will eat if he wants. He knows where the food is.
We did change to Nutro small breed but we have since changed to Blue Buffalo small breed. He seems to like that better.

Do you have a local pet food store? Establish a relationship with them and discuss the issue. Most places will give you samples to see what the dog likes.

I fed mine Purina brand and love the breed
Just a tip on other things here...watch their ears for infections because they are floppy ears.
Never give rawhide items they can cause real problems in the stomach and intestines and next thing you know the pup has to be operated on and yes it has caused death...happened to a friend of mine and even my vet says not to give them.
Even though Greenies re-did their formula on them I would never trust giving them to my babies they did cause death a few years back.
I do not give anything to my babies that is made from China...period...
Good luck with your pup...

Our pooch used to be a voracious eater. I am not sure she ever tasted anything. We have been giving her the Fromm line of dry food for a lot of years, buying a different flavor for her each time we bought a new bag. About six months ago, she became very reluctant to eat. There were no physical issues, everything checked out fine at the vet. Her groomer, who also owns a natural pet food store, suggested switching her to the senior formula of Fromms since she is now 13 years old. She thought the regular formulas may be upsetting our dog's stomach.
That helped but what I think really made the difference is we started mixing about a tablespoon of can dog food, pureed veg or fruits into her food along with some water. She is back to enjoying her food. I think she just got tired of the same thing all the time. We mostly buy the Merrick can food which comes in a lot of different varieties and I can tell when she likes one more than another.
I would try mixing in a small amount of a quality can dog food and see if that increases her appetite.

I just adopted a Shih Tzu puppy a couple of weeks ago. He is 10 months old. We feed him Fromm's Puppy Gold and he seems to really like it.

We started with the Nutro Natural like our breeder did for for our Shih Tzu.
He is five and for the last two years he has been happy with the Nutro Weight Management.
He does a lot of sleeping : )
