I just saw the announcement on Facebook. Big Picture Classes and Studio Calico have merged.
Thd class I took at SC was horrible. I haven't taken another. And I haven't taken a paid class with BPC in a while. The prices have been too high for me.
So it won't make a difference, but thought it was interesting.

I have been finding all of the mergers and acquisitions interesting. Although, it is a little scary to see what is happening in the industry, it is also very exciting to think of the possibilities for the future.

Of all the online classes I've taken SC's have been the worst. Only worth the money if they include a stamp set or kit. Since my poor customer service experience with them I definitely will not be buying a BPC in the future. I will add that I have not taken a BPC class in a long time because I felt that they were priced to high.

I find this very interesting. Not sure how I feel about this yet. I have taken classes at BPC and they were wonderful. It would be worth SC and BPC to snatch up those Garden Girl classes.
I do wonder what will happen with Stacy J. Didn't BPC buy out Elle Publishing like a year ago? I don't see much from that side anymore...

I actually just started my first class with SC - Workspace with Marcy Penner. I thought for $15 it was worth a shot. I'd agree that sometimes the BPC classes are expensive, but there is usually a coupon code or discount. Plus you get points for every dollar you spend which add up to $ off classes. I LOVE the classes I've taken at BPC so far (Finding Photo Freedom, Inspired Scrapbooking, Stashbusters Anonymous - twice) and really think you get your money's worth at BPC.
I hope that the merger means good things for both. I did like the discount kits we got from Studio Calico for BPC's NSD challenges so hopefully that will be the kind of thing that the future holds.

I'm so not impressed with how SC runs their kit club, so I worry that that will trickle down to BPC. I, personally, am not excited about the change.

Isn't Studio Calico under the American Crafts umbrella too?

I got an email with a link to the announcement. It really had no impact on me since I don't frequent either of these vendors. Reading both the announcements, it indicated they were going to continue operating as independent companies, so I am not sure I see the real benefit except for $$ that may have changed hands.

No they are their own company. Here is what they said about it in their blog post about the merger. " Studio Calico is an independently owned and operated business located in Bowling Green, KY. Studio Calico currently distributes monthly kits around the world direct to consumer. We also design and license a wholesale product line to American Crafts. This partnership is strictly a license agreement and is only for our wholesale product. Everything else you see on our website is designed, produced and sourced by employees at Studio Calico headquarters in Bowling Green, KY. "

Realistically it won't affect me because I don't take a lot of online classes.
I do wonder which way it went though. Did BPC buy SC or the other way around? If BPC bought SC I would probably give them a second shot hoping BPC will improve the abysmal customer service SC has. If SC bought BPC it's a guarantee that they'll never see a penny of my money.

If they mean "merge" as in BPC prices have decreased and SC class content increases, then yay. Otherwise I'm not interested because I am not going to pay over inflated prices for some SC PDF's under the BPC name. Now if SC had actual videos and customer interaction like BPC does, then I might consider buying some. <--that's what I'm hoping for!

Another win for AC, yes? And Ali Edwards sells her classes through BPC so I'm wondering if her upcoming news is related too, in some way? I have enjoyed every class I have taken from BPC so very much, but I've never taken one through SC.
Just a random side note - when I read the article and saw the photo of the boardroom with all those men in the room, it felt like a business/merger/acquisition type situation, and I wonder who are the primary voices here? Is the scrapbooking industry selling out to men? Not that I care about gender and I know there are many men who do scrapbook (I looooove Tim Holtz!) but I just wonder.....

It sounds like a great merger to me. Studio Calico classes are very hit and miss, but the price is right. Big Picture Classes provides quality classes but they are usually out of my price range. Education at Studio Calico will improve and I look forward to that. Big Picture Classes now gets to feature classes with kits/products instead of just a supply list. They appear to be working independently as businesses but together in their ventures so it seems like a benefit for all of us.

Interesting move. I haven't taken classes with either yet (though I did just sign up for a Maggie Holmes class at SC). I've liked the look of several classes at BPC but just haven't been able to afford them. Guess it's a sign of the times....

It makes me nervous. I have been a long-time fan of BPC, have taken many classes there and have loved every one of them. I've had no personal dealings with SC, but I have read repeatedly the numerous problems others have had with them. I hope BPC continues to offer the quality product it always has. I don't like these changes.

I have taken a few classes from BPC. They are on the expensive side. However I think most of them were very good. I don't think the value was there in the SC classes that I have taken. I also do not care for SC business practices. And I would hate to think that everything in the scrapbook world is going to end up being controlled by AC and SC.

I'm taking my first SC class now and I've taken one BPC in the past six months. So far they are night and day on price and content. I think BPC is more of a clearinghouse for designers to sell their classes. I doubt much will change on their end. It might raise the bar for SC a bit with a wider pool of instructors. It will be interesting to see. I am a kit snubber and I really like it. No problems.

My gut reaction was "Uggh!" I love online classes and have spent a lot of money at BPC. They are on the more expensive side, but most of them are worth it. The teachers put thought into their content/videos and are active on the message boards. I have also bought classes at SC and there are only a handful of classes that I thought were worth the money I paid. In my opinion SC classes are high on hype & eye candy, but low on content. Hope they don't influence BPC's way of producing classes.

I've taken many classes at BPC most I have liked but found if it wasn't one of the "bigger" names it didn't seem to be as good. I've taken 3 or 4 at SC & found them to be ok but not over the top great. I don't see or hear much about Stacy Jullian any more & wonder if she is starting to get out of it. I agree with the prices of BPC, seems they are just a bit too expensive.

I really think this is a good thing. I've had issues with SC in years past but I caved about a year ago and subscribed to PL and eventually the Scrapbook kit. I really do think their SC has finally improved ( like a LOT) and I have loved the past several kits I've bought. I haven't had a single problem in over a year.
BPC is a wonderful company that is really dedicated to helping people scrap their memories, learn new things and enjoy their hobby. And Stacey Julian, she is amazing and hopefully she will be very active in this partnership. I think with BPC's quality of classes and SC's savy, edgy style, nothing but positive things can come out of this!

I admit,my first thought was that AC was taking over! I've been an on again off again subber to SC for awhile. I've taken a lot of their classes. Some were awful, some were OK, and a couple have been excellent. Many of them DO have videos, and all of them have message board interaction among the instructors and students. With my rewards discount, the classes are usually pretty reasonable so as long as I learn 1 or 2 new things, I'm happy. I've taken a couple of BPC classes and they are OK, but over priced, in my opinion. I still think Shimelle classes have been my favorites.

I don't see it changing anything anytime soon ... except maybe SC would move their classes to BPC to host them all together?

The way I read it they weren't going to move any classes from one place or the other.
Personally, the classes I have chosen to take at BPC were because I could use my stash. I know a lot of people like to do a class with a kit, so I get the appeal for BPC.

I just adore her take on scrapbooking and I love her products. I would hate to see her partner with SC and have her reputation ruined in any way (big or small) because of something crappy SC did. And they always end up doing something crappy, don't they? Don't do it, Ali!!
