Please don't judge. The bottle is sitting on my counter and I'm not sure whether I will try it.
I am seeing a new doctor, who I really like, and she suggested I try this medication to jump-start some much needed weight loss. She didn't push it on me but said it has helped some of her patients who are emotional/boredom eaters, like me. The potential side effects are a little scary, and include things like memory loss and fogginess, neither of which I can afford as I am starting a new job.
Anyone try it and have great success? Dismal failure? Horrible side effects that made it not worth it?
ETA: It's a seizure medication that is frequently prescribed off-label for weight loss. It's one of the two medications that make up Qsymia, which is approved for weight loss.

Never heard of it, but maybe I'll ask my neuro to change my seizure meds, two birds, one stone *wink*

It looks like it is topiramate. I have seen people have weight loss. My husband had it for migraines. No weight loss for him. His biggest issues were pop tasted funny, his Diet Cokes seemed metallic. He also had some brain fog symptoms, hard to find the right words, and some weird numbness or tingling in his hands and feet. I'm not sure on specifics on those last ones but he is asleep so I can't clarify. The branded for seizures was Topamax and the nickname is Dopamax, it makes people "dopey", his side effects weren't uncommon obviously. After a while they improved though. Good luck!

I took Topomax for a long time and it was a wonder drug and I lost all of *0* pounds on it. The doctor told me a side effect of it would be weight loss. Well no dice. I took it a few years later and I got the worst headaches from it. (The kind your skull is too small for your head kind). Nightmarish headaches. But that was me. I hope it works for you.
My GP gave me Zenical and the weaker drug is Alli and well I used it all of 2x and the treatment effects ruined my favourite underwear so I stopped taking that.
I take Dexedrine now for ADHD and it in combination with conscious dieting has helped me to lose weight. I have more to go but the weight is going. Dexedrine, for me, has been life altering. It is a stimulant and it for whatever reason really helps with weight loss as a byproduct of helping ADHD.

I tried to take topomax for my bipolar disorder. It majorly crossed the wires in my brain. I had trouble putting together sentences and everything tasted funny. Especially pop...pop tasted very metallic to me. I have a co-worker who takes it for migraine management and for her it works. So everybody's experience is different.

If it's Topamax, I had some side effects. I had the metallic taste with carbonated drinks for about 6 months. I've been on it a couple years for migraine prevention. I take 100mg a day and it doesn't suppress my appetite and never has unfortunately. My DD started it a couple months ago for the same reason and she has the appetite suppression but no other side effects and she takes 50mg twice a day

Can you try it before school starts? I would never take anything that made me foggy. ADHD meds like adderal and vyvanse are sometimes used for weight loss.

If it is Topamax, I can agree with the posters above that I had zero weight loss on it. It is listed as a possible side effect so I was hoping for that but nothing. I took it for migraine prevention and I had every side effect listed. It was like I was walking through treacle, everything just seemed too hard, I had trouble concentrating and finding words and after a couple of months I had to go off it.
Everyone is different and some people I know have taken it without any issues. None that I know of have lost any significant weight though.

I take Topomax for migraines, 50mg in the AM and 100mg at bedtime. I've had some side effects - the tingling in fingers and toes at first (that went away after a couple of months), some of the brain fog when it comes to finding the right word, not a major problem but I'm retired so it's not a big deal for me. I did lose weight, I was also trying and it made it easier. I've lost about 65 pounds, slowly, in about 1.5 years. I still have maybe 30 more to go. Right now I'm in a plateau, but we were traveling and it's hard when you're eating in restaurants every meal. They say it's harder to lose when you get older, I'm 60 and I've managed to do it. No judgement here - the pills are a tool, they won't do it on their own, you have to work too. Good luck on whatever you decide.

I took topamax and lost 40 lbs. Mainly due to the lack of drinking the soda pop because with the carbonation it went flat. So it does work for some people.

I took topamax and ended up with NINE kidney stones in one month. No weight loss either. And some tingling in fingers and toes. Worked great for my headaches tho. Not worth the pain of kidney stones tho.

I was also on Topamax for a couple of months with zero weight loss. After the third month I stopped taking them as they are very expensive here and was doing nothing for me.

If it is topamax, I have taken that for many years.
I have been at the points in my life where people have said I am boney. I am a little on the thin side but when I started taking this med, I didn't eat at all. I don't drink soda AT ALL really, although there are times when I crave it. When I drink it, one it tastes flat and two it makes me sick.
I do hide pretty well the fact that it makes me stupid. But I often can not find my words. I have a pretty good internal thesaurus, so when talking to people I lose the word I meant to say and I can usually come up with another word pretty fast and recover. (This does not help the fact that I'm awkward socially anyway lol) I sometimes think people notice that lag. It's bad at home sometimes when I yell to my husband to go into the kitchen and get me a ...... and I want a spoon but can't remember the name for it. "You know the silver thing you eat with." And he teases me. Fork? NO! The other thing!
But I can't really say that I want off of it. My migraines were so bad before. I'm not sure I could survive without it. So this is how I cope.
On a side note Merge, I think you're totally beautiful. I said on another thread you beam and You really do. And I'm not judging you if this is what you need for yourself. But I think you're gorgeous inside and out.
If you have any other questions, I'll try to answer them.

I see that this is an old thread, but wanted to comment- if it's just for weight loss / cravings, you could try Contrave. It's a combination of Bupropion and Naltrexone. Its claims are helping to reduce hunger and control cravings. Bupripion is what they prescribe for people to stop smoking, and the naltrexone acts on your brain to block the 'high' you get from eating craving-driven foods. (Naltrexone is the same thing they give drug addicts to block the high from drugs.) It really does work.

If it is a form of Topamax then in the epilepsy world we call it Dopamax for a very good reason. You'r ass will be on the couch & have a hard time getting off of it & getting motivated!!! Fizzy carbonated drinks will also taste like shit. When I took it for seizures it did cure me of my diet Dr Pepper addiction. I did not lose any weight while taking it, I gained weight bc my big ass was parked on my couch all day long!!!! Please watch for side effects.

peabrain, that is a whole lot better than me. I knew in my head what I wanted to say, but getting it out of my mouth was damn near impossible. I was trying to talk to my boss and I said something totally stupid and I just started crying and he sent me home. I went right off that med.

--my weight loss doctor told me that excess sugar can also cause brain fog and forgetting words... if I'm diligent about staying away from sugar, that does help. (forgetting words is also one of the many, varied symptoms of menopause, too-- yay!)

It did not help me lose weight, and neither did Belvique or Contrave. Phentermine did not help and the only thing that helped is Adderall. Neither Phentermine or Adderall are recommended for me.
I am considering weight loss surgery. My primary care doc told me, after trying everything, there is still no magic pill.

Yep, I took it for migraines. It didn't help with migraines (for me) nor did I lose any weight. I had all the same side effects mentioned here, although they mostly went away with time. Sodas never did taste right, though. To me, they always tasted kind of flat somehow.

If it’s Topomax, I lasted on it for two weeks as it started affecting my vision. My dr said it would need a strong dose to have the weight loss benefit.
