I went to the eye dr a couple weeks ago. I got a new prescription for distance glasses. My vent is HOW the heck are senior citizens living on only social security supposed to survive? I priced all the optical places around here. All run around $200 plus. I asked on here about mail order and got a good site BUT. To get the proper pair of glasses you have to measure your eyes and make sure everything is on center in millimeters. I'm half blind how am I supposed to measure my eyes properly? Therefore mail order glasses are out too. Guess I'll just have to stick with what I have now unless I win the lotto.
No optical dept in my walmart. I guess I could go back to the DR and ask to be measured I didn't think of that I hope they don't charge me.

Prices are just crazy. Even when you have insurance they are expensive.

Yep, glasses are expensive. I have insurance and always use the money allotted for glasses, for contacts instead. Needless to say my glasses are quite old. One of these years I am going to have to suck it up and buy glasses.
A vent of my own: my darn check card was compromised which is why I usually use my credit card, one darn purchase with my check card an this happens... now I am completely paranoid.

My vent is against myself. I sent a snarky text about my mom to her, but it was meant for my husband. That will teach me to say something I can't take back. I have been feeling like a jerk ever since. I've already apologized and we are fine but man I'm really kicking myself.

MIL and FIL, I don't mind your dog staying with us while you're at the beach with BIL and his family. He's a cute little guy and not tons of trouble. But could you at least let us know what day you will be returning to town? "We don't know when we'll be back" seems a tad open ended to me.

Yes the price of glasses is ridiculous. I know there is a lot more to it than frames, but I saw on 60 Minutes a while back a spot about eyeglass frames. Most of them are made by the same company - Luxotica? - I think that's the name, or something similar. They are headquartered in Switzerland, and also own Lenscrafters and Sunglass Hut, and a couple of other eyeglass-related stores/vendors. So in essence, there is a monopoly on eyeglass frames worldwide!
Regarding the measurements required by the cheaper online vendors, you should be able to get a copy of your Rx from your eye doctor, and the measurement that they instruct you to measure and provide is your pupillary distance. Your eye doctor should be able to provide this number with your Rx and everything else that is needed is in your Rx.
Seems like I saw a thread on the old board about ordering from the online sites, with some very positive reviews. I am tempted to give it a try, I recently had my eyes examined and got the pupillary distance # from my Doctor.

I concur about the mail order. I don't see how those who order from the mail (and can't see well) are able to get a good fit/adjustment of their lenses on their faces.

You can't measure your own eyes (or at least not reliably without a machine)... An optician can do this (maybe ask for it to be done at a Lens Crafter's, Walmart optical, etc type place), but your optometrist certainly can do it... Go back and ask the doc to measure the distance and write it on your prescription... It takes 20 seconds so I'd be surprised if there'd be any sort of charge...
The reason you can't measure your own is because you have to be looking straight ahead with the ruler at zero lined up with the center of that one pupil, and then look straight ahead of the other eye so that the distance from zero can be measured... Horrible explanation but it's the thing where they hold a ruler up to your face and then have you look at one of their eyes and then the other... A small change of focus can change the measurement by a millimetre and over distance - even just across a room, (compared to the distance of you looking at yourself in a mirror), that millimetre can make a big difference... There are machines that will measure it now but it's medical equipment - not something anyone would have...

My parents swear by Walmart. They paid less than $100 each for bifocals.
I haven't tried them, yet.

Since I always order online, I asked them to measure my peripheral distance (PD Measurement) before I leave the doctor's office. Everything else is on the prescription that you need. One of the ladies I work with didn't know about ordering online and when I told her, she made a run at lunch to Walmart to have her eyes measured.

I know I'll be screwed if I am ever on a fixed income as my prescription is so thick that ANY lenses even the cheapest are over $300, not including frames. Last year the Dr. added bifocals which jumped the price up over $400 for just lenses. (though I could probably lower that slightly and get bifocals with a line instead of the blended ones. ) Thankfully I do not need new glasses every year. And if I am very lucky I can get laser surgery before I go on SS since that has a better chance of being covered. LOL.

I and several family members have used Zenni Optical online several times for glasses and have been very pleased with the frames and the lenses. I had my optometrist take all the measurements I needed when I had my eyes examined. My most recent pair of bifocals with a higher priced (for Zenni) frame was just under $100. And this included a lens coating. I don't work for Zenni.. just a regular customer who is happy with their product and service.

I had my measurements taken at the eye doctor. Also, I measured the glasses that I had that fit the way in like and I found glasses that almost match the size. I have a narrow face and most glasses poke out way too far in the sides. I live the glasses that I paid less than $20 for.

Oh I feel your pain on glasses. DH got new frames and prescription sunglasses and it cost us almost $500. Thank goodness for health savings account! My vent is: I am not my child's secretary!! My Mom bugs the crap out of me when she does this. She would text my oldest and if he doesn't answer within an half hour, she texts me and tells me to tell my son to answer her text. Not "will you please ask him to reply?" Not "is there a reason why he's not answering?" (he gets grounded from his phone from time to time) Now, if it had been a few hours, then yes I understand her texting me, but an half hour? No. And it bugs me that she just demands I tell him to answer her. She did that today and my answer was "he was busy with his music lesson." No apology. To make things worse, she will do the same to my ex if the boys are at his house! He has complained to me about it in the past.

I've ordered from Zenni, great and cheap. I did call my local LensCrafters and ask if they would adjust them even though I didn't buy them there. They said yes. I didn't go, so I don't know if there would have been a charge.

Had another rough day with 17 yo DD. Not sure what the answer is but she involved 14 yo DS this time which I hate! We have group counseling tomorrow so hopefully we'll figure something out.

I've not ordered from Zeni Optical, but I have ordered from Coastal, Ozeal Glasses and Firmoo. I've gotten all my glasses for less than $50. I also measured my PD myself and all my glasses are fine.
VENT - If you are a customer and you are paying don't throw your money or cards on the counter. Crumpled up money is even worse. Don't be that person. Also, get off the phone. I have questions I need to ask you.

I just got glasses for the boy at Walmart; frames, single vision polycarb lenses with scratch resistant and anti-glare coating for $117.00 total. I thought it was a good deal. My glasses were from my optometrist and they were over $400.00 for no-line bifocal. Insane, but I love them.
My vent: DS if you want help with something, don't cop a 14 year old hormonal attitude when I ask you questions about what you want help with. My patience is thin on a good day. Today is not a good day. Kids! Oy!

My vent for today is that everyone in my family has asked umpteen questions about a meeting tonight at school about Honors classes for my 7th grade DD. I didn't go to the meeting until tonight so I couldn't answer any of those questions yet. Didn't stop them from asking tho.
But on the positive side, they are changing our school curriculum depending on each students testing scores. My 7th grader will be taking Freshman classes this semester and is on track to graduate high school early with two years of college classes done in the process. Yay!!

Eyeglass prices, eek! My vent among the many from last week was my dog ate my glasses beyond repair. I cannot see beyond 3 feet without them, yet have problems reading while wearing glasses. My fault, I left them on the couch then could not see well enough to find them. Dog sure did. They were a few years old and I needed a new prescription, but I was not really prepared to get them this week.
Otherwise having a pretty vent free week so far with the exception of the glasses issue. I have kind of weird prescription and on top of that have to have progressives so it was $600.00 for just the lenses, oy.
I have been using a local optician for 17 years and he is expensive. The cool thing is he will re-make glasses if you don't like the pair you ordered without charging unless you choose more expensive frames.

I've ordered from Zenni...I just called my Eye Dr's office and asked for my prescription and PD measurement, they gave it to me no problem. I didn't like the glasses I got at all, but from previous threads, I'm in the minority.
My vent is I have way to much to do, and not near enough time to do it. My kids have been great all summer, but the past week, they have been horrible listeners, and I've just been on edge. All I want to do is take a nap, but I've got too much to do. Today all 3 kids were playing nicely, then it turned into them all screaming about something, and I sent them all to separate corners for a quiet 30 minute time out...I wanted it to last all day! So on top of it, I'm feeling guilty for not spending enough quality time with them. Ugg...

Seriously? Close the road in front of the schools during registration week. Not to mention all of the sports going on. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. School starts next week. They're digging a line. Hopefully they'll finish it this week. My daughter has '2 a day' soccer practices this week. Not fun driving 2 blocks in the wrong direction to get around the road construction four times every day.

when you make a deal to get the truck back to keep your room clean, why are there clothes all over the place? and how many times do you need to be reminded to clean the drain out of the bathtub when you are done using it? ugh

We have construction in front of our high school too and registration is tomorrow. Band camp already started so it's a royal pain to get into the school to drop them off.
