Just Fyi, that would be illegal. Even if OT was not assigned or approved, the company is legally on the hook to pay her. They can pay her and fire her or discipline her for not following procedure, but must be paid if she was working.

Am I the only one who can't wait to hear how this turns out after today's meeting? Honest- I'm not really a nosy person, but this workplace issue really interests me!

Saying the words that co-worker said would get you fired in a heartbeat in my Fortune 500 company. As it should!!! I don't even care if OP was that (I know she wasn't!), you do not say those words!

Can't wait to hear the outcome! Thanks for adding some drama to my usually boring Monday mornings. I work pretty much alone so I love these kinds of stories!

Most manipulative people get super angry when they are exposed for what they are doing. OP, you are dealing with this the perfect way. Just keep staying calm and eventually she will blow her own cover and sabotage herself.

So I could just stay at my office an extra hour every day and they would have to pay me if I was working? I could work an extra 20 hours every week, but there is no approved OT. But with the new laws about OT I know if I work OT I will be paid.

Keep refreshing the page waiting *patiently* for an update!
As for the whole must be paid for overtime worked, I didn't know it was a law either. I've only worked at places where you could only work overtime if pre-approved. Although I did have to stay 15 minutes late one day because the printer/scanner decided to act up right when I was getting ready to leave for the day and had to scan something to another department. I left after 15 minutes and emailed my supervisor the next morning. She said it was ok since I'm not someone who abuses it. Which at the time I found weird. Now, I understand it. I've never worked overtime before, because I was under the assumption that if I could not get my work done during normal working hours, then I wasn't doing my job correctly. FTR, there are departments within my company who do get overtime. But it's the nature of their department. Definitely not in mine. Wonder if I can switch?!?! LOL!

I gotta say I'm surprised and disappointed they didn't reprimand her for her behavior. I do not envy you one bit having to continue working with her.

Did they make her acknowledge at all that she was wrong to stay late for unapproved OT and do your work? Or was the meeting just about her blow up at you?

Ummm...that doesn't sound like a positive outcome! It doesn't sound like she intends to restructure her behavior at all. I'm sorry you will most likely, be subjected to more of her outlandish behavior. I suggest keeping a written account of her actions here on in. If she EVER calls you a bitch again, report her for harassment. Do not allow yourself to be her victim.

If I were you, I would be asking (yourself) for days in December off now. Otherwise, it will look like you are being mean to her in December if she doesn't get the time off. If nothing else, I would at least let manager and HR know now.
Is her position hard to fill? Would her leaving be the worst thing?

Wow that was a slap on the wrist (for her). I agree ask for your days off in December now, then she can't complain you did it on purpose to put her out. What a piece of work.

Glad your evaluation was favorable.
Sounds like HR and managment just got a chance to see the real B that she is. If the manager has to micro manage --that will get old very quickly for management.
She may have cooked her goose, so to speak.

Are there other signs of instability on the part of this co-worker? If I was called into a meeting with HR after a blow up like that, I would be apologetic and eager to find a solution. For her to continue to be belligerent suggests that she either doesn't value her job much, just doesn't care or has an underlying condition that would make me worry.
I think you did absolutely the right thing. Keep on and document every issue with her.

YUCK!! Glad your review came out good and hopefully it just makes her look intolerant and irrational. I hope you are not subjected to it anymore but yes keep track if so. What a pain in the butt!

IMO, the bigger problem here is your ineffective manager. This employee is basically allowed to do what she wants. She makes her own hours, does other people's work for them and curses at her coworkers, but the manager is having a meeting to talk about "work environment?" Completely passive and pointless, when it's clear that the employee is creating all of the problems. Why isn't this being addressed with her directly? It's amazing how some people are allowed to run roughshod over their coworkers. I worked with a person like this and it destroys morale like nothing else. I'm sorry your manager is so spineless, and I'm sorry you're dealing with this jerk.

I was called the same by a male coworker and I was told that if I wanted to move up I would need to deal with it on my own (ie pretend it didn't happen and don't get emotional about it). I'm still pissed two year later.

She is a piece of work. And is as manipulative as they get.
You were rude? No, she called you a F***** b**** That's rude! You were overbearing? Uh, taking over your work is one of the most overbearing things you can do at work!
^^^^ That is called projection in the psychology world.
Keep your guard up, but stay calm. ALWAYS stay calm. Her true colors will eventually show through. And with your manager micro managing they will see it for themselves. I've btdt. So sorry you have to go through this. But I know you will prevail.

Obviously name calling should not be tolerated. I would have demanded an apology. But good for you that you stood calm and professional. Micro-managing is a pain but like someone else said here, that will get old quickly and probably taper off.
Where my husband works, name calling is grounds for a suspension without pay. Do it again and you are let go. I love their strict respect in the workplace policy.

Interesting link This seems to say that if an employee is told their hours are limited to 40 hours a week, the employer may not be stuck paying for the extra unapproved hours of overtime. And yes, evidently I am a huge procrastinator today or I must have an unmet need for drama today...I keep checking back too.
Nope. The new OT rules haven't change the fact that the employer must pay for every hour the employee works. As the employer you are responsible for managing the employee's time worked. And if they work overtime, even unapproved, you have to pay. Like others stated, you can discipline them up to and including termination. But you have to pay them for all hours worked.

It's great you remained calm and professional. It tells them a lot about your sincerity that you asked for an evaluation too. Good luck going forward.
I'm sure they noticed she didn't apologize. "Making her" wouldn't have been as revealing.

I get the feeling they are using this to start documenting her.
I'm proud I kept my temper. She definitely projected. The things I supposedly do bug her but they are exactly what she does.
Everyone is sick of it. Her martyrdom attitude and woe is me then flips to I'm so great and I know everything is annoying to all. But I have to work closest to her.
I'm gonna document and keep being polite and just let her hang herself.
My manager is stuck and I get the feeling he wants her to just leave. But the few folks above him are not aware of how difficult she is. They have the final say.
I took the high road and will now just wait. I just really don't deal well with the tense atmosphere.

Still taking the high road. Even said good morning to her and nicely indicated her tag on her shirt was out. It was very large and very noticeable.
She snapped a thank you.
I also know that today she was reported to the manager that her headphones (allowed but we must be able to be aware of our surroundings) were preventing her from hearing someone that was asking her a work question.
I am staying balanced and in control. I am trying not to be angry OR feel sorry for her because she is pathetic. I just envision her at the meeting with her awful attitude.

And that awful attitude of hers will get her in more trouble. Keep doing what you are doing. I guarantee you will see karma in action one day.
