I don't do a TON of puzzles.. I go in spurts... right now I am working on one while watching the Olympics... I try to find them at garage sales so I don't spend a ton of money on them.. so the selection might not always be the greatest, although if I don't like the picture I won't get it.... anyways... I picked one up and although I like the picture it is FREAKING hard.. it's a bunch of old 50s cars that have been smashed and piled up on each other... and then to boot it kinda like a watercolor picture.. not clear cut.... SO how long do you work on a puzzle and give up?
Dang it.. did the poll wrong again... don't count the first option.. that is the question

I love jigsaw puzzles. I have an app on my iPad and do one every day. Obviously, they don't have the number of pieces that a regular one would have, but I can never not finish one.

I should also tell you that aside from never giving up I don't look at the box while I'm doing the puzzle. That is imho cheating. I'm the world's biggest puzzle snob.

I enjoy puzzles! Which is why I will work on one until it's finished, or until the moment I realize I am not enjoying that puzzle. It doesn't matter how far along I am. I'm the same with books. If it's not enjoyable, why do/read it?
The puzzle you describe sounds difficult!

I don't give up. I suffer through. LOL!
The last puzzle I put together was awful. The picture was nice. But, the pieces didn't go together nicely. They had to be forced together. Plus, there was a black cat in it. It was my first experience with such a large amount of black in a puzzle.
I have another puzzle, same brand, that is the face of a black cat. One of my kitties is black and these kitties remind me of her. Anyway, I am afraid to start it as I know the pieces are going to be a PITA and it's just going to be plain hard. I don't have time for that.

Oh I do look at the box for sure or I would go crazy.. .lol
I have only not finished one puzzle (not this one) and it was one where I hated the picture... so I boxed it back up. It was a Chinese scene with lots of red and yellows and it was just plain ugly. lol
I'll hang with this a little longer, I just get frustrated cause it takes me like 1/2 hour just to get one piece to fit.
Anyone ever do the world's largest puzzle? A DJ did on my radio station.. (not sure if he finished it or not...but it was interesting on how he had it shipped to him and all that.)

We only do a puzzle once or twice a year and always finish them. It is a Christmas day tradition for us . If we finish our Christmas puzzle before New Year's Eve, we often will start a second one. They can stay out for weeks and it isn't usual for the progress to be super slow and we will declare pieces are missing and/or the box came with pieces that don't belong until all of a sudden everything starts to come together. I wish I thought of pulling one out to do through the Olympics.

Usually until it's finished with the exception of the Game of Thrones 3D puzzle, that seriously defeated me and went back in the box unfinished.

My dd loves puzzles. She thinks looking at the box is cheating too and the last puzzle she did was a black cat face too! She never gives up on a puzzle. She is such an optimistic person - she says with every piece you get in it just gets easier because there are less options!

My husband will never give up. Ever.
I, on the other hand, lose interest in about 15 minutes.

We often had a puzzle going when I was a kid. They would be laid out on the dining table until they were finished with family members sometimes fitting in a few pieces when they passed by or sitting for awhile to work on it. Now, I like to do them when we RV as an evening or rainy-day activity. I bought one of those felt roll-up gizmos just for that purpose. I can't remember ever quitting on a puzzle, and I would never consider referring to the picture on the box as cheating. That made me LOL.

We do a lot of puzzles and have done some pretty challenging ones over the years. I'm generally a stick it out and get it done type. But there was one we stopped about not long after starting. It was one depicting Van Gogh's Starry Night I believe. It was a beast. I think we got less than 10 pieces matched up. I held onto it for a couple of years feeling guilty about giving up so soon. But when we packed up our house earlier this year I decided that life was too short and put it in the donate pile!

I am working on one right now. It has 4 different pictures of elephants that are decorated for an Indian festival. Lots of colors and lots of grey, wrinkly skin. I attempted to put it together several months ago and gave up and put it all back in the box. This is the one and only puzzle that I have ever put away before completing. Now that it is out for the 2nd time, it is easier for some reason and I am almost finished with it.
I have never heard of "looking at the box" as cheating. I don't think I could put a puzzle together if I couldn't study the picture.
Saw the cutest puzzle on Friday at the store, it was 4 or 5 black lab puppies. So cute but I passed because I thought all that black would be really hard!
Half Price Books usually has good prices on puzzles.
While we were at Disneyland in June, DS discovered the crystal 3D puzzles. Anyone here ever try them? They are pretty fun but we found them challenging.

I don't look at the box while I'm doing the puzzle. That is imho cheating. My mom doesn't think looking at the box is cheating and most often does look, but sometimes she does puzzles with only the wrong-side showing. She was in the laying out the pieces stage of a puzzle one day when I stopped by. She wasn't in the room, so I started "helping" by turning the pieces over so the picture side was up. When she walked into the room and saw what I was doing, she kindly suggested that I stop helping. I asked her if she looks at the bottom of the box when making a puzzle that way. I got the 'you are not amusing' mom look for that remark. I was thankful she didn't wash my mouth out with soap for being sassy.

I have had a soccer team puzzle on my table for at least 5 weeks. It is 3/4 of the way done but the part that is left is the same color & very challenging. I wish I could just put it away but am determined to see it through.

I NEVER had done a jigsaw puzzle until I married DH.
It is now a Christmas tradition. I am 99% useless at doing them, but I do participate.
I would never attempt one on my own, unless it was one made for children. I just don't have the skill.

They're a winter activity for us, never thought to bring one out for the Olympics. It's a great idea! I need to get a cruel blue ocean one, or Hockney painting to match the swim events we are hooked on!

I love jig saw puzzles, I can only think of two puzzles I got fed up with. One puzzle had really muted colors, I got about half way through and I was over it. Another one I bought at a yard sale, it was missing so many pieces I tossed it in the garbage after a couple hours of frustration.
I'm pretty picky about the puzzles I do. I buy a lot of good ones at Hobby Lobby. With a 40% off coupon they are a great deal.

I love jigsaw puzzles but haven't done one in ages. I still buy them for my mom, but I'm kind of a snob about them and usually only buy the Springbok brand.
I can only remember quitting on one puzzle - it was solid red. I got chunks of it put together but it was just too hard to be fun and I finally put the chunks and the pieces back in the box.

I love puzzles but will stop if I'm dreading getting back to it. There's a certain level of detail and variety to the picture that I enjoy and if it's not working, then I move on.

Your mom might be the queen of all things puzzle. Next time you see your mom let her know that this puzzle snob would bow in her elite presence. Respect your mother, missy. I had my mouth washed out w/soap one time. You don't want to go there, ever.

Well I did it.. I put it away.. I sat down once again.. and for a 1/2 hour didn't get one piece in. (I really do think pieces were missing because there were two outside pieces I needed and they were not to be found.).. MAYBE they were in there, but another thing is, I usually do puzzles with my 19 year old DD; well if you saw my other post, she isn't in the helping mood these days. Maybe that is why I was struggling.. I missed my partner. Damn girl. haha.

We've done a couple this summer. It's more of a winter thing at our house. It has become tradition to give my husband one or two for Christmas.
I have to like the picture or I'm not interested in doing it at all. My husband likes the 1,500 pieces or more. I prefer the 500 to 1,500 pieces.
My husband has never given up on a puzzle. If I get fed up with one I'll sit with him and read instead.

I voted never but I imagine if I went days without finding a piece that fit somewhere I would give up. I do puzzles mostly in the winter months, so nothing going right now.
