We've switched over to glass and only keep a few plastic items to send leftovers home with people. I always buy the same brand/type of lid. And we store them with the lids on. We also use ours for pre-prep, so that means they are mostly in use in the fridge.
Even when we used plastic I liked to keep them with the lids on them so match ups weren't a problem.

No, I don't put the lids on them, I keep them separate.
The pullout bin in my kitchen that holds Tupperware and Corning glass containers with lids is like one of those wooden block puzzles where all the blocks fit inside each other and you have to put it back just so. DH had almost everything out the other night hunting a container. I've learned that it is easier for me to just get things out for him. I can't tell you exactly how it all fits, but it does.

I have them all stacked inside of each other and the lids all gathered together and on their sides next to the containers. Same, although they never seem to all match up. I purge Tupperware often!

I stack all of the bowls or containers inside one another, and I place the stack of matching lids on top of the stacked bowls or containers.

I play the stacking game with all our various sized plastic bowls when unloading the dish washer. I'm getting quite good at this game! All the lids get thrown in the drawer right beneath them. Which leads to the never ending matching game for left overs.
I've been playing this game for 22 years and can't seem to stop this habit.
