I've been looking to either make my own trash can storage or have someone make one for me. I'm wondering which is better--slide out or tilt? What say the peas?

I've had both. I think it just depends on your floor space. Right now mine is tilt and it never bothers me. Slide probably has less slamming when closing and may be a little easier to change the bag in.

Also, there is a guy who said he could make one and the lowest price wood would be pallet wood. He quoted $125 for that. I'm not sure how it would look next to my oak cabinet, though? And not sure if pallet wood paints well?

I've never used a tilt can - do they stay open until you close them? If not, then I would definitely want the slide-out kind. There are many little kitchen tasks (peeling eggs, shucking corn, etc.) where I want the garbage available next to me without having to use a hand to open it.

if you like a rustic look, pallet wood could be nice. have him clarify which type tho- is he using found pallets with pine and crap wood, rough sawn, what's the thickness? or does he have access to finer, thicker wood like some are made of? are they all heat treated and guaranteed never used with food shipping or chemicals? you can't just use any pallet wood, some of the stuff they are treated with is pretty unsafe and can offgas in your home.

I have a 2 can slide out. I think I'd prefer that over the tilt because I'm thinking it's easier to clean up any funk that misses the trash can (ours gets nasty sometimes)?

Slide out, all the way. Makes it a lot easier to change the bags.

Assuming the pallet wood isn't the toxic kind, I would do a thinned down version of paint to the point of it absorbing it. You can ad coats until desired shade/darkness. Make it look totally unlike your other cabinets. Don't even try to match but compliment.
Oh, and I like slide out. Have one that holds 2 cans (recycling/garbage) in 1 cabinet door space.

I like this the best (with pull out now!). But not sure if the outside would get nasty if I did the white? Or would it stay clean enough?

Mine is very similar to this and is light gray and it has stayed pretty clean. No kids though. Just get it in a paint that it is durable and easy to clean up. I don't know about pallet wood. It seems like it would be pretty rough and prone to splinters, but maybe I'm not thinking of the right thing? Near the knob, the paint has worn off a little bit on the top edge, so keep some paint for touch ups. Ours does stay open on its own and I would agree that is a vital feature.

I have tilt out. Get it at the Little Falls craft festival. They usually have a whole bunch of different style and colors. I am pretty sure I got mine for under 100$. it's black. Has the flat top, sides are black wainscot. We have our little kitchen tv on the top, so it worked perfectly.

Not sure if I would be able to get there until the second day. Do they sell out quickly? Also, do the ones at the craft fair typically use larger kitchen trash bins or smaller? I really want to continue to use the bins we have now and they are larger than the tall kitchen, I believe.

Things are generally picked over the second day, but if you want the nicer oak, or wood ones, there are usually some of those left. Like what size do you have? like a big garage one? Pretty much all of them use the large tall ones. I saw one bin that had 2 sides to it last yr. I think for recycling?

I was going to say slide out because of kids making messes trying to maneuver trash in a tilt-out---BUT then I saw the photo. And those tilt out farther than any tilt-out trash cabinet I have dealt with before.

I'd go with sliding.
