We are going to say with some friends for the weekend and I'm trying to think of a good hostess gift. She's a no nonsense type of person so flowers, chocolates and things like that won't work. She doesn't drink so wine is out. Last time I asked her what I could bring her and she told me paper plates.
I'd like to bring her something other than disposable dinnerware.

A Woodwick candle. The wick is made out of wood so it crackles. Really nice candles.

Paper plates, napkins, paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, dish soap~ they're all things she can use up there, will save her time, and the extras can either be left there or she can bring them home at the end of her vacation.

She told you what she wanted, so why stress out about it? To her, paper plates ARE a good hostess gift.

I would definitely bring her the paper plates. I'd bring something else as well.
The Woodwick Candles Dex mentioned are nice and would be practical too in case of power outages. The long lighters would go well with it.
Have a great time.

Can you offer to bring dinner for Friday night? Something that would just have to be reheated.

I would get some really pretty paper products. I love Meri Meri's Liberty collection, but Target has had some really cute stuff recently.
I really like the quick bread and cake mixes from Stonewall Kitchen and Barefoot Contessa. Would she like something like that?

I'd definitely get paper products. If she's the type of person that has all the meals planned and doesn't really want to leave a meal to chance, offer to bring a yummy dessert or snacks. I love to bake and I think people always love it when I bring a tin of homebaked cookies. Especially if there are a number of guests or other family members that would like that.

Or something specific to your region - chips and salsa, carmel popcorn, cheese, etc.

I'd take misc paper products and also some baked goods. I like to take a few loaves of breads from Breadsmith if you have one near you. Pumpkin, poppyseed, lemon lavender etc.

She told you what she can use, so bring that. If her cabin is anything like ours, storage space is at a premium so even bringing things like candles (while nice) would just be extra "stuff" that would eventually have to be stowed somewhere or brought home and that can be a PITA. Plus, anything scented like that can be very attractive to mice. They even ate a bar of FIL's Irish Spring soap once!

You said she told you to bring paper plates last time. I'd call her and ask her what she'd like you to bring this time. She might be fully stocked up on paper plates this time.
If she says she doesn't want you to bring anything, then I wouldn't. I'd write a nice thank you after your visit and maybe include a Starbucks gift card.

I would bring the paper plates and the biodegradable tp. The practical stuff that a cabin needs can be expensive. Wrap it up with a pretty bow. There have been enough threads/comments that food can be impractical as if it isn't eaten, it is usually trashed. There is a great magazine, Cottage Life (1-800-465-6183 or cottagelife@ccdsglobal.ca) that is a wonderful gift. It is $44.75 (Cdn$) a year, about $35.00 US$. This is a wonderful magazine and as life at a cottage or cabin in Canada or the USA is basically the same, this is a great year round gift. I have given this magazine as a gift and it has been very appreciated.

I have an Up North cabin and people who stay with us often bring us something. My favorite thing is a gift certificate to a local restaurant. We don't have a lot of room for a bunch of stuff. I would not mind it if someone gave me a floatie for our lake.

just adding laundry soap to the consumables list plus breakfast food, and ditto to the gift certificate for dinner out. Do they have wifi or internet? If not, maybe a favorite movie on disk or a board game to play while there.

We have a lovely pea friend who had let us stay at her cabin twice...the first time we left a cookie gift set from cheryls.com (seriously, so good!) And the next I think I left some pure romance products. I can't remember if I went for nice bath products or a naughty something actually.

I would say no to big fluffy towels, expensive candles or a magazine subscriptions
Big towels take a lot to wash and dry
You don't know what scents they like
And OMG I think I would seriously injure somebody who put me on a list. I haven't recieved mags in a few years and I still get junk mail from them. Tons of junk mail.
Take paper towels, toilet paper, plates, mr clean sponges and bottles of juice for breakfast. Maybe sunscreen and bug spray.

I'll bring the paper products and then some homemade cookies and dips/chips for the weekend. Consumables all the way around.
And I'll be starting a blanket for her.
