9-16-16 The parents decided that they would go into work, but that the Dad would work from home in the morning. I cared for the baby from 11-7. She was sweet but more clingy than normal. I did come home and immediately take a shower and change my clothes. Honestly, I don't even know if I've had HFM. I'm 56, so even if I called my mom I doubt that she'd remember accurately if I've had it or not. I'm assuming that I have. I did wash my hands a lot today. We'll see in a week or so if the precautions I took were sufficient. Thanks for sharing your opinions and advice. ****************ORIGINAL POST: ********************* One day a week a nanny a 9 month old baby. I just received a text from the mom that the baby has Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease. I do have children of my own (22 years and 17 years) but we've never experienced this. I've also never cared for a child with this. Usually I care for this baby from 7 am until 6 pm, so it's a long day. I understand that it's a virus and very contagious. I'm trying to make up my mind if I want to nanny for this family tomorrow or not. What do you think? The mom's a nurse, the dad's an investment broker (if that matters). Edited to add: Video link Video shows a doctor diagnosing HF & M and his recommendations. He says most people over the age of 7 have been exposed to it. I'm still undecided if I should go tomorrow or not. I've nannyed this baby for several months. She's had colds and other common issues and we have a good relationship, she smiles at me and holds her arms out to me indicating that she'd like me to pick her up and/or hold her.

I know it's highly contagious, so just on that I'd say no.

Is this the only child you watch? How many days has the baby had it? Those would be the deciding factors for me. If you watch other kids, I would not keep the baby. It's uncommon for people over 10 to get it (though not impossible). If the baby has only had it for a day or two I wouldn't keep her. Just because chances are good she'll very cranky.
My oldest DD had hand, foot & mouth at 13 months and then again when she was a little past 2. We stayed home with her both times (DH & I took turns) for probably a week. She was miserable and needed us.

I would seriously consider taking a pass. My youngest got it when he was 2, and it seriously sucked. I wound up with it as well, though I think a mild case.
Also, my husband had one of his teens on his track team come down with it last spring. That poor kid (17) was ridiculously sick and in pain. I felt so bad for him.

Isn't it contagious seceral days before symptoms occur which is how it's so catchy? I'd read up on a reputable medical site.

My kids got it at 10 and 13 from my nephew. SIL didn't tell us he had it because she thought my kids were too old to catch it. My kids were absolutely miserable. I swear the only reason I didn't kill her was she got it too! I personally wouldn't take the chance.

One of mine had it when they were in pre-school-but I can't remember what the rules were around how long they were contagious and should be in quarantine. I do remember that neither me or the other kid got it though. Helpful, aren't I?

My toddler had it 2 summers ago. She got it from a kid at daycare. No one else in our family got it from her, including our older girls, dh, myself, my mom and niece/nephew who she was around before we knew she had it. The DR told us that it's most commonly spread among young kids but it can be spread to older children and adults. her case didn't last long and I just worked from home for a few days. It wasn't a big deal to us but maybe she didn't have a bad case???

I wouldn't. I don't think a regular daycare would take her, although it depends on how long she's had it. If she was diagnosed yesterday, no way. My nephew had it and his mom got it too. The Mayo Clinic website says the child is most contagious during the first week.

I wouldn't go, not everyone has had it and you can also get herpangina which is just the mouth sores with no hands and feet but is just as painful, my friend got it from her daughter, who she suspects got it at the gym babysitting area. It's really contagious.

My DS had it when he was 2 and we quarantined him at home for 7-10 days. I would not expect a nanny to watch the child as HFM is so contagious. No one else in my household got it though - thank goodness!

I really wouldn't want to because baby is likely to be miserable and that would be terrible to deal with for 11 hours. When DS had HFM he just wanted to nurse all the time... I was glad I had that to keep him somewhat happy.

Since your kids are older i would do it. M had it and no one else in our home got it. Now I would not take her out to the park or anything. I normally pick up pretty much anything he gets.

I've never had it. DS did, and nobody else got it. Also, I teach preschoolers, so I'm exposed most years. I don't know of any of the teachers getting it.
Before reading this thread, I would have said to go, and just wash your hands regularly. I am having second thoughts after reading about big people getting it - I'd never heard of that!

My son had it 6 years ago. It was absolutely horrible. He cried and fussed until he had to be held almost constantly. He had a high fever and his mouth was a mess. I pray I don't have it happen to our little ones as they are starting school soon.
My advice....stay away. You may not get it, but it isn't worth the risk!

My daughter had it at nine when we were on an epic back country tenting trip. Considering everything I'm surprised the other three of us never caught it.
Cold mountain streams sure helped ease the pain for her.

If the mom is a nurse what is she saying? The mom is saying that she's discussed it with her doctor and the doctor is saying the baby isn't contagious at this point. The parents have decided to work a reduced work schedule tomorrow. I've agreed to go in. I'm assuming that I've had it. I'm not sure that I can carry it to my son. I plan to shower and change my clothes upon arrival at home tomorrow.

I wouldn't blame you for wanting to avoid exposure. I don't think that is part of your job description to care for a sick child nor put yourself and your family at risk.
I did just want to throw out there that twice in the last few months my baby has run high fever (103-104) and I immediately took him in to the doctor. On both occasions (weeks apart), they said he was likely coming down with hand foot mouth disease, since that is the way it starts with a high fever. On both occasions, the sores never presented and the fever went away after 24 hours. I have thought it was the strangest thing but several moms on a local FB group have said a one day high fever was going around. My older child has never run fever that high.

You are probably wise to shower & change as a precaution.

Wash your hands well, then wash your hands some more, then wash your hands again. And repeat.
I work in daycare and it is highly contagious. If you have it you are not allowed at daycare and must stay home for a week once the rash appears.

My ds (10) had HFM about 3 to 4 months ago. The pediatrician told us he was only contagious with the fever. He had a VERY mild case; however, 6-8 weeks later a few of his fingernails started to come off. Doc confirmed they are starting to see this with some of the newer cases.
I would not hesitate to sit with the child unless your immune system is compromised in some way. Just treat it like any other virus, wash hands often.
