My kids will be attending a public school for the first time next year, and it's a school that does have several lower-income families. I already planned on sending in extras of supplies I know *my* kids seem to use up the quickest (pencils and Kleenex for DD, crayons for DS), but thought I'd toss in a few extras of the things that are always needed. DD is going into 3rd, DS into K. I'm not sure if they have communal supplies or not, I just figure I'll mark the extras for the teacher.

You're on the right track. Pencils, crayons, Kleenex, hand sanitizer. Glue sticks for the kindergartener.

No clue but I just wanted to say its really cool your doing that. I'm sure all the extras will help out the teacher as classroom kids.

Crayons, pencils, and glue. I'm pretty sure kids secretly eat these for lunch.

Kleenex, but I don't have a lot of places to store them. I would love to have some donated in November or in January or something.
Pencils, glue sticks (primary grades).

Kindergarten teacher here: Hand sanitizer Glue (sticks and liquid) Crayons Pencils Eraser caps Bright colored paper Check with the teacher, some years I go through certain supplies very quickly, others years not. I have 40 boxes of Kleenex stored currently and am known as the one to come grab a box from throughout the school ziplock bags too. I looooooove when a parent gifts supplies like these mid-year!

Not a teacher but something I learned from volunteering at the school. Teachers (at least here) tend to get some supplies donated at the beginning of the school year. But it's like January/February when they're in real need. So what I do, is I buy extra of whatever I'm donating and basically double it. I give one set at the beginning of school and a second set after the Christmas break. Also, the kindergartener's classroom may need Clorox wipes, or some equivalent. I know our kindergarten classes use them like crazy for getting glue off tables in between activities and it's often a "chore" for the kids (wiping tables).

Yes!! There is so much I can do with colored paper (not construction, just copy) and tag board or thick paper. If they get to do artsy type projects, then supplies for those.

Glue sticks and Kleenex. I have to echo what others have said about donating midyear. I have a ton and a half of stuff at the beginning of the year and not enough space. Some things are greatly appreciated later on when supplies are starting to dwindle.

About midyear is a good time to send a new supply of pencils and paper for upper elementary grades. They all have a good supply in September, but by January there's no more to be had for some children.

I think it depends on the teacher/grade. We almost always runout of Kleenex and the kids each bring in two boxes. They use two to three to blow and many parents think it is the school's responsibility to pay for it (like toilet paper) so they refuse. One year I bought extra Kleenex and asked for more from parents. We were still out and I was buying more. So I brought in a roll of toilet paper. Giant roll. It took a couple of days, but a few boxes were sent in and we finished the year.

Crayons, pencils, and glue. I'm pretty sure kids secretly eat these for lunch I know I always did.. Except for the pencils. I was afraid of getting poisoned because they had lead in them. (yes, I was THAT kid)

I always send markers, pencils, glue sticks, crayons, etc. in the beginning but then at parent teacher conferences we always ask for a list and they usually ask for more kleenex, lysol, and lysol wipes and hand sanitizer. We usually hit Costco and go big for them. In kindergarten she asked for more crayons. We grabbed 20 more boxes of 8 count crayola and dropped them off and I seriously think she was going to cry. She was there filling up the table pencil boxes with fresh crayons in February happy as a clam. But anyway, we just use those two visits to get the list then we don't have to try to remember at odd times.

I am not a teacher nor do i have kids in school anymore. I thank you for this thread and would love for someone to post a reminder thread mid school year. When DS was young, I was a single mom, full time college student, working as many hours as I could fit in around school and childcare. I always managed to pay for ds's supplies but it wasn't easy. I wonder now if parents gave donations that might have kept the teacher from askung for other supplies later in the school year that I would have had a hard time paying for, although I would have found a way. I think I will buy some supplies and take them to one of the lower income schools in the area. Today, this is something I can do that I never could have done when DS was in school so I would like to pay it forward. I will monitor this thread for the primary needs.

I second the idea of pencils. I love it when parents donate those. This year I am a little stressed about our copy paper situation. We seem to be given less to use each year. At the same time we no longer have text books for several subject areas. I guess you wouldn't know the circumstances in your district until you talk to the teachers but I know I would be thrilled if I was given a few extra reams of copy paper at the beginning of the school year.

This teacher thanks you too! In 3rd grade the thing we go through most quickly is glue sticks! I swear I do not know what they're doing with them…

As a high school teacher, I would dearly love for someone to donate some Kleenex. I buy Kleenex and hand sanitizer at Sams. We probably go through 2 of the big bottles a year, so that doesn't cost me too much. The Kleenex costs me a bunch though. I buy the name brand because big kids will blow through the thin Kleenex. This last year I had a lot of kids with bad allergies. One little girl had a day that was so bad that I gave her the box of Kleenex and pulled out a grocery bag to tape to her desk so that she did not have to make a ton of trips to the trash can. By the look on her face you would think I had given her a priceless gift.

I wish teachers would send home wish lists during the year. I would gladly send stuff in, but often districts have stupid rules about that.

Some of your comments really made me laugh!
One tradition we've started on my children's birthdays is that they get to pick something important to them and give a gift to that entity. It's been the school library before, a no-kill pet shelter, you get the idea. Their birthdays are at the beginning of school and midyear, so maybe that can be my prompt for this year!
I didn't even think about hand sanitizer, because I'm one of those people who will only use it in dire circumstances, but I know it's a practical thing in school. Glue sticks, too - man, those things just vanish IN the tube, I think! (Speaking of eating, anyone remember that peppermint-scented paste...?) The previous schools they've attended would always send out a mid-year cry for help when needed, at least for desperate needs, but since this is a public (albeit charter) school, they may have different rules. Thank you for all the suggestions!

Our school seems to run out of kleenex, copy paper, and erasers for the pencils.

Ditto on the pencils, Kleenex, and hand sanitizer. I am debating whether to order those cap erasers this year. They are very useful and extend the life of a pencil, but some kids destroy them. They pick apart the rim that goes around the end of the pencil, so the eraser no longer stays on. And then they complain that none of the pencils have erasers.

I love Lysol wipes for a quick wipe down of a desk after a kid with a cold leaves before the next period starts. I try to keep them healthy.

I really like the white bar erasers by Pentel. Those things last forever. I have a few in my desk and students will borrow them when they need them.
