I am always amazed that parents don't take precautions to prevent this, but I also know that sometimes it is too easy to purchase something. Specifically thinking of Amazon's one click button and on itunes you only have to put your password in once and then it isn't needed again for 15 minutes. In fact, I think I remembered reading something on the news that there is a suit against Amazon(?) and maybe others for just that reason.
So, yes, parents should be more careful. And kids....well, they just don't always make the best decisions, do they? lol.

You know not everyone is smart enough to understand technology and a lot of these games are designed to take advantage of that...now that does not absolve you of responsibility, but its not cool that there are games that basically target people who don't have the know how to lock down their phone. NO. Just no. If someone is really not smart enough to use the features on their phone, then they have absolutely no business passing it off to anyone, much less a kid, to use. The amount of grown-ass adults out there whining that they shouldn't be responsible for something that they are in fact responsible for is beyond ridiculous. Stupidity does not absolve you of your responsibilities. If someone is really that ignorant about their phone, they could always stop by their carrier's stores or kiosks and get some assistance. If that's too much for them to handle, then they have no business whatsoever owning a smartphone. SMH I SO agree with everything you have written. It seems more and more common to read/hear of others who are quick to point fingers at anyone other than themselves when they're faced with the consequences of their actions. As a side note, I downloaded the KimK game a few weeks ago and love it! It was a free download and I have spent ZERO $$ on it.

In 2 hours, my 4 year old made over $800 in purchases on my Kindle. Since he was 4, I called Amazon and they kindly refunded all of it. He usually doesn't get much play time on it at all, but I was deep cleaning, and needed him entertained! He was 4...if he was 11 like the kid in the op, I would be pea-livid with him! He would be figuring out a way to make money to pay back what he spent. At 11 he can read and knows what clicking the "buy" button means. My nephew did the same thing at his age, to his dad's Amazon account. Luckily dad got the email notification on his phone, and was able to cancel it. We laugh now (he's 12), but he got into some trouble for that one. Kids are very tech savvy. At 11, he knew exactly what was going on. Blaming the K's? Really, mom? Take some responsibility for yourself and your kid!

I would not be surprised if the child was using the mother's phone to play on the App and she didn't have the controls on. I can't imagine my 11 year old wanting that app on his phone but if he was playing with my phone for a while he might look at it to see what it was about. I agree with this. Be a parent for crying out loud! Lisa D.

This is what gets me. The 11 year old was saying this? My son is 11. That type of language would NOT be tolerated.
My son has a Touch and a Nexxus tablet. The Touch has his money from gift cards tied to it. He spends it as he wants but he never buys anything. His Nexxus tablet has Google play money attached to it. No credit card associated with it. I will not allow that.

Wow. I hope her 11 year old was grounded from the phone. I think she should have made him pay the $120 to teach him a lesson.

Once again, a parent blames someone else for her failures and her kid's screw-ups. So tired of the "It's not my fault" whine from parents.

At 11 I don't care if the phone is locked down or not. My kids are 11 and 14. They know they cannot buy or install any app - not even free ones, without asking my permission. I guarantee you that 11 year old knew exactly what he was doing and is only crying because he got caught.

I had to stop reading her books many years back, I was too annoyed with the main character. I totally realize they were cozy FICTION mysteries, but couldn't wrap my head around the main character being so flippant about taking her young children with her to question potential murderers. Now I understand where the main character got her parenting skills though Use parental controls and don't attach a credit card to your account. Oh and DO TAKE responsibility!

I just read today that App is set to earn over $20 millionth is year. And Kim K would get 45%. Just from people buying things to play the game since it's a free App. Part of that $20 million will be ad revenue for games that are advertised while people play her game.

To be fair, she said that she put on parental controls. The article does make it sound like she could set a $20 monthly limit on iTunes? Because she is claiming (from what I understand) that the game overrides that $20 limit?
Is putting a spending restriction on iTunes even possible in settings? I mean, other than a password? I smell BS all the way around this one.

Ok, so I am one of those stupid parents you are talking about. My son has had a phone since the age of 10, mainly for staying in contact with him to and from school. Last year he asked if he could have a data plan so he can add games to his phone since he was bored on the bus; I added the plan. So now he can add his games. But, then he starts charging add ons to the games and so eventually we wind up with a $700 phone bill. So, the crazy thing we found was that he was also buying add ons on the Playstation Network. PSN actually allows people to add money onto their account via Tmobile. We call Tmobile and they can't remove anything, but at the same time we can't put a block on any purchases since it is bought through Google Play and PSN. We ended up paying the freaking bill and son now has no data plan and has no PW for PSN. That was the only way since we could not block purchases. Anyway, so I understand how that can happen, but to blame other people is ridiculous.

I understand how it happens as well, since my 8 year old used his brothers itunes gift cards to buy gems and such for Clash of Clans. When asked why he did it, he said that he wanted to be better at the game and didn't want to wait to earn things the slow way.
That being said, I was a little surprised that the KK game would make that much money a year. I am curious how much other popular games make per year. I bet it is similar but we just don't hear about it because it isn't linked to a celebrity, and one that people love to hate at that.

Our solution, we don't have a credit card linked to our iTunes accounts (not even dh and I). We just use gift cards. Limits the spending that anyone can do. I just wish that the Nook accounts were the same, but those you have to have a credit card linked to.
(We did this after my iTunes account was hacked)

If that's too much for them to handle, then they have no business whatsoever owning a smartphone. SMH I think this is unnecessarily harsh. I was coding on a Commodore 64 in the freaking dinosaur ages, I'm no technology neophyte. I bought a smart phone for my own business purposes - which had absolutely nothing to do with games. I remember when the outrageous in App purchase charges first hit the news. I had no clue that this market actual existed. I don't play those games, and hadn't come across it at all. But I had downloaded a few games for my kids to entertain them when we were stuck somewhere. I remember being more than a little annoyed that when I went into settings, the default was to ALLOW in App purchases (hopefully Apple has changed that setting). Considering how user unfriendly Itunes is - it wouldn't surprise me at all that many, many kids know their parents' passwords. It's a clunky, ridiculous piece of crap software that if Apple hadn't produced would have been universally boycotted. But I suppose that's for another thread. Once again: If someone is too lazy or too "busy" to do that, then oh well. Your phone, your kid, your responsibility. It really is that simple.

He needs a clout round the earhole, and she needs to disable in app purchases. Nobody's fault but theirs.

Suck it up mom. Happened to me too. Dd came down with her Nook and asked if I could buy an add on for a game ($2.99). Said sure (she loves the game), put in my info, and voila add on is now on her game.
What I forgot to check was how long the card info is available. On the Nook you can choose insert info every purchase, leave it on for so many minutes, or never ask for info again.
Yup, hers was set to so many minutes. And unknowing to all of us she bought $80 worth of Minion Rush add ons. Part of it was my fault not making sure the info was not available but the games are set up such that "click here to conti ue" means hey you just spent $5.
Not every app has it point blank, in black and white that it will cost $ to do x y z. They do that because the kids won't see that it costs $.
I, as an adult, have almost bought an add on when not realize I was. Thank goodness I now have the devices set to info at each purchase!

First I'm shocked there's a KimK app and secondly what exactly is this game about? It's about gaining fans through personal appearances, photo shoots, having a large wardrobe (one of the places they like to hook you for the Ka$h) and working your way up to a list celebrity. It's a vapid game, but strangely addicting. It's Kim Kardashian's version of that Farmville. Huh? So is there an option to release a sex tape too? My 12 year old plays a game on his phone and is always talking about how he bought something. And every time I ask him "Bought with what money?" So far it's with in-game tokens he earns in play. No real money has changed hands yet. But if he had access to money to spend. He would. It's a conversation we have all the time at our house.

Both of my kids play this game on their iphones/ipods. I asked DD about it and she looked at me quizzingly. I was like, what? I am just asking. It goes to your iTunes account, correct? She said, "Mom, I have like 39 cents in my itunes account so no, I'm not spending any money on that game." DS and she share the same account since she gave him her old ipod so we are safe.
I have NEVER hooked up their Apple ID account to a credit card. I buy them iTunes gift cards and then once their iTunes account is out of money, there it is, you're done. They are pretty frugal with it, so I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something else I was missing.

I let the youngest granddaughter play with my kindle. She was having a great old time. I went and checked my email and saw purchase after purchase from amazon in some game. It wasn't amazon's fault, it was MY fault for assuming she wouldn't buy thing. Well, amazon has great customer service and refunded me and showed me how to change my parental controls too. lol

Is this the same woman who had all that controversy over saying she would rather have her children die than her husband?I think she may have written an article on and was on Oprah about it.
I can see how easy it is for kids to charge things unknowingly, but it has to do with parental control rather than the game
