I was watching a show about immigrants being trained for jobs in Switzerland.
In the show, when the students were deemed ready for the work force, the teacher had them call various businesses and ask for a "taster week."
This was a week to work at the job and see if it was something the student really would like to do. It was unclear to me if the student was paid or not. At the end of the week, some of the students were offered jobs.
Anyway, I liked the idea and the name.
Is this common in other places? Perhaps I am just clueless, but I have never heard of it being done around here.

The closest thing I can think of is when Jr/Sr kids 'shadow' people who work in the field that they are interested in.
