I have long hair. I HATE the hair on the nape of my neck though. It's always fuzzy and messy looking - even if I curl or flat iron it. I trim it off on the sides of my nape now but it still is always messy, falling down and tickling my neck. I saw a pic today of a girl with long hair pulled up and the nape of her neck shaved. I kind of liked it. I asked my girlfriend (a hairstylist part time) if she thought it would look ok on me and she said "I don't feel comfortable doing that." I'm not sure if she meant on me, or anyone. I wear my hair up in a bun a lot to get it off of me. I don't think I'd want THAT much cut off. Probably from about the bottom of my ears down. It would be easy to upkeep it at that point. (my husband can help). I'm wondering if anyone else has done it and if they really like it.

I've seen it done, but its not for me personally.
I wonder if maybe she thought you'd get tired of it quickly? It would seem to me that once you do that, it would take a bit for it to all grow back if you didnt love it.

I fully support you doing whatever you want to do with your hair! And it always grows back if you don't like it! That being said, I think cutting *that* much off is "the look" so it might be a little extra funky if you cut off much less. Like you had to get stitches or something on your head and they shaved you at the hospital? Like it's not as intentional. Again, you do you, girl. Just thought this might be a perspective you hadn't thought of in making your plan.

I have seen that done several times, even like almost 30 years ago. One person said she did it because her hair was so thick, this thinned out the back nicely for her. Made sense to me.

Gina suggested that cut but I wouldn't do the design because my hair grows fast and 3 days later it'd be gone.

Your girlfriend is a stylist? And she refused? I don't understand...unless something is outside of one's skill level, like a complicated color job, why wouldn't a stylist do it? I sometimes wish my stylist, also a friend, did talk me out of some things...lol, but she'd never refuse.

I did it in high school and really loved it. I may do it again next summer. You could only tell it was shaved when I pulled my hair back and set it up high. If I tied my ponytail at the nape of my neck it wasn't visible.

But this seems pretty simple and an easy fix. If I hate it, in a month it'll be an inch long again and hardly noticable.

But, dudes get short cuts. oh well, I'll find someone to do it if I decide to. Even if it's just my husband. Seriously it's a pair of clippers. If I could see I'd do it myself.

I have really long, really thick curly hair. The weight of my hair was ruining the hair at the top of my head when I put it up (breaking it and pulling it out). I have had an undercut for a couple of years now. When my hair is up it looks punky cute. When my hair is down, you can't even detect that I have it shaved under there. I have my husband buzzing it every couple of weeks for me. When it starts to grow out a tiny bit, it feels all yucky again. It's super easy to keep up I just put my hair up and he does it for me with the clippers.

I've seen some super cute undercuts with designs and color in them! My motto is always: it's just hair! It'll grow back. I am also the mom who lets her dd's cut and dye their hair whatever color they want. Have fun!!!

Mine is straight across and high, like the picture. I really needed the thinning effect. I can't do layers either because the shorter layers get all frizzy. This works perfectly, so I can keep my long un-layered look with the double effect of the length holding the longer hair down. My curls are just how I want them and hassle free

I sometimes wish my stylist, also a friend, did talk me out of some things...lol, but she'd never refuse. Funny, that's the agreement I have with my stylist. After the last time I asked for bangs and instantly regretted it (I mean literally as she was making the first cut I was sorry) and she reminded me that I don't like short hair around my face, I told her not to let me do that again. I love that she's honest with me. I may not always agree, but she's the professional, and I get a much better cut from her when I trust her. She'll do what I ask, as long as she doesn't think I'm going to end up hating it, but I've learned that when I tell her what to do, those are the haircuts I'm the least happy with. This last time, I told her I needed more layers, and shorter, because my hair just wasn't doing what I wanted. She sat me down and said, I think you need less layers. We need to grow some of these out. And I trusted her and she was right. I haven't been this happy with my hair in months. She wouldn't refuse me anything, I don't think, but she would definitely argue with me. That's the beauty of seeing the same person for a long time. She knows me, she knows what I like and don't like, and she knows what my hair will do.

This is my daughter's. We showed our stylist the pic posted above as a guide. She did it the first time and now I do the upkeep.

My 13 year old daughter has her hair undercut as well. She loves it, especially because her hair is sooo long and thick. It looks cute - she has a linear design cut into hers like the pics above. I think it will be a major pain in the ass to grow out, but whatever. It's not my hair!!

Now I feel like a total dowd for just keeping mine cut short in the back and longer in front. 'Course the design would be gone in days or lost within my curls. But still... You could totally make that work freebird. Remember to post pics!

My teenager has hers cut like this, only hers goes all the way to the top of her ears, even in front of the ears. She loves it. Her hair lies nicer on her neck when she wears it down, and it's punky when she has it up (she also has it dyed orange). It suits her.

I've seen pictures of super cute designs done and I really want to do it. My hair is so thick that I would love to get rid of some of the heat and weight this time of year by getting rid of the troublesome underlayers of my hair. I asked my hair lady about doing it and she said it's best to get it done at a barber shop. She also told me I'd need it touched up every couple weeks and I'm just not going to want to go get that done every other week so for now I haven't done it.

Way way back in my 20s I had my hair undercut. It was really thick at that time and fun. I went to a barber for mine, it was cheaper and he did a way better job of it.
Today at the Indiana State Fair, both my sister and I were complaining about how hot our hair was making us and that we should get matching undercuts. Lol

I used to have mine undercut sort of like that back in my 20's. It was a little longer like a man's regular haircut and I dyed it blonder than my regular color. Fun things you do when you are young! If I had it cut like that now I would dye it a fun color! My hair is very fine and tangles easily so this did help with the back of the neck sweaty tangles.

I started with an undercut. Now I just see a barber and shave the whole thing practically
