I am visiting family in Denver in October. I need to rent a car. I'm gobsmacked at the rates I'm seeing for the major players. The best one, price wise, I've come across is Thrifty. I don't need a problem though that going with the cheap route could cause. So if anyone has any recommendations or suggestions on how to get the best deal, please let me know! I've only rented cars locally for the purpose of having transportation when a car of ours was in the shop for extended time. I never paid the prices I'm seeing online but I am keeping it over a weekend, not sure if that's a factor or not.

See if there is a rental off site from the airport.

Honestly, I have used every car rental company at many airports and I would go the cheapest route. I have never had problems with any of them. I have used Thrifty several times - no problems at all

We used Enterprise at the Denver airport and didn't get the insurance since our insurance already covered it. Go with the smallest vehicle you can.

Don't forget that members of the AAA and the AARP are offered car rental discounts. Some insurance companies also offer discounts, I think (not sure) you should check your car insurance.

I rented a car in Denver in June and the rates were crazy then too. My dh usually handles our rental cars and can find something great or decent. He searched and searched and we payed double what I would normally pay.

Are you a member of Costco?
If so, go through their site. We did that for our vacation this summer and got an AMAZING low rate for the week. We ended up with a Jeep Cherokee for 11 days for $325! It was crazy! We booked about 3 months in advance.
Best wishes!

Do NOT use Fox!!! It was HORRIBLE!! Even though we'd made a reservation online, when we got there with 3 kids in tow, they didn't have a car for us!!!! They ended up sending us to one of their sister companies where we did get a vehicle but their service was HORRIBLE!!!

Denver is freaking expensive, I know I live here and wanted to rent a car once!!! Try to go off the airport if you can but problem is getting to the car. Maybe use the new lightrail to get downtown to get to the car rental places??
Or Denver has SmartCars To Go? Maybe that would be cheaper.. Ride the lightrail downtown and pick up a car... Granted it is a Smart Car but very popular here, I see them everywhere

We rented out of Denver through Alamo and were very pleased. Not more than an hour into our trip a rock flew up and dinged the windshield. I called them, and they were very considerate and since it was so small they told us to continue on our trip. I told them about it again the minute we returned the car and expected to get a bill (we used our own insurance and didn't add theirs) but never did. I called them a while later after the trip, and they said it was so minor that it was not worth turning in and they repaired it. I had heard horror stories about things like that, but was pleasantly surprised.

Their office was a card table out in the parking garage. The employee had a sticker on his laptop so that must make them a legit company. Lol! The only car they had left was a filthy car that someone had smoked in. We argued with the guy forever and we finally found a rental through another company.

I take E-470 a lot and it doesn't cost that much to and from. You can take lightrail (when it works) into Denver and rent from there. Right now there is/was a shortage of rental cars because we had some major hail and everybody's car was getting fixed. I've never rented from DIA, so I can't give you info there.

We had two tolls...one for $3.99 and one for $30.10. We were assured that we would be charged just the actual amount, no surcharges.

Then again, I don't drive the Springs. here is some info on rental cars www.expresstoll.com/Pages/Rental-Vehicles.aspx

That's a long drive and depending on traffic and where you're staying in Denver can be a total traffic mess.

Try SilvercarWe recently used them out of Denver for driving around Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park. They ONLY have Silver Audi A4s with free navigation and Wifi. With a $50 off coupon I used (can get from online or from someone who has used them before) our cost was actually a little less than a standard car from Thrify. LOVED the car and it would be perfect for winter driving (AWD).

I've rented from Thrifty many times at various airports and never had any problems. I think Thrifty is a pretty big company-they just don't advertise much.

Toll Road E-470.. I drive that once a week.. From before the airport all the way till it ends in Parker area... It's approximately $12.40 each way... It's INSANE.

I agree, Costco has been the best rental car deal several times for us! I'd also bid at Priceline "name your price" option for a few days to see if you can get a deal. I used to ONLY use Priceline but I've had less luck with them lately.

That's a long drive and depending on traffic and where you're staying in Denver can be a total traffic mess. I will be driving from Denver to Colorado Springs on Thursday. On Friday evening, I'll be driving back up to Denver. Then back down to Colorado Springs in the afternoon, back up to Denver in the evening on Saturday. Then back down to Colorado Springs Sunday evening or Monday morning. Having just moved my daughter out to Denver in late June, we did the drive several times. It's not an easy drive (tons of traffic and delays depending on the time of day), I know.

I used to ONLY use Priceline but I've had less luck with them lately. Not a Costco member, but is it worth it to get the membership just to get this break on the car rentals? We don't have AAA and I'm not quite eligible for AARP (though I'm close!). The closest Costcos are one hour away either north or south, so we haven't ever pursued it.
