I am not sure where a baby should be changed. No change table in the bathrooms is just stupid. Maybe it's for health reasons? I don't know. I can't imagine why.

Old reststops. Built. Before this was common

Not sure what kind of rest area you are stopping at. But baby changing stations aren't a federally mandated item like handicap access is. They are a convenience offered by stores to keep their shoppers in the store longer. A rest area isn't interested in encouraging lingering. Also, people tend to abuse them and put items on them that are way heavier than a toddler so they end up broken, and then removed to not be replaced.

Slight hijack, was it super hot around northern California and southern Oregon? We just moved and took the inland route and it was 107 degrees at 8p.m. in Redding. I thought we took a wrong turn and ended up in Vegas It didn't cool down until we were north of Medford, OR.

And if they're not in ideal working order (well, I guess, even if they are), they're a liability. It's much easier to simply not have them.

If I were traveling by car I would much rather change my baby in the car than a filthy rest stop bathroom anyway.

If I were traveling by car I would much rather change my baby in the car than a filthy rest stop bathroom anyway. ^This I have a 2 year old and a 3 year old. I can count on one hand how many times I've used a changing table while out and about. When they were tiny, I'd change them on my lap in the car. When they were too big for that, I changed them on the passenger seat. By the time they could stand, we mastered the stand-up diaper change. If it can't be done standing, they lay in the back end of the SUV or on the floor of the backseat if necessary. Anything is better than public restroom changing tables, IMHO! Now that the 3 yr old is potty trained, that opens a new can of worms. What to do with the 2 yr old while helping the 3 yr old go potty when traveling alone??

I remember some bathroom stalls having a belted childseat attached to the wall so you could latch in the 2yr old while dealing with the 3 yr old, but can't remember seeing one around in a long time. Pretty sure I used a lot of handicapped stalls and brought in the double stroller with kid2 belted in during those fun times To the orginal poster - after a very bad experience with a filthy rest area, full bladder and miles to the next town several years ago, I plan rest stops into our road trips. We just traveled the full length of the I5 and had no problems finding regular places to stop (Starbucks, Home Depot, etc.). Even the loneliest stretch south of Stockton to Santa Clarita has a very nice, clean In-n-Out about half way. I don't mind paying for a drink to get a clean bathroom. I will also not use gas station bathrooms after stopping at one and being directed to the Honey Bucket behind the building!

I changed my oldest child's diaper in the trunk of the car once. The backseat had his big old carseat in the center, so that didn't work, and the bucket seats in the front were obviously not an option. The trunk was perfectly flat and worked perfectly. It always irritated me that men's bathrooms so rarely had the baby changing stations. Dads change diapers, too!

Wait till middle of August and then talk to me about heat. We had to get home and not make a lot of side trips. plus we had all 3 kids with us on our way back and all there junk. We where pass full on the way home. No room to change in the back like I normally would do. I don't worry about nasty thing. I keep cleaning wipes in the jeep just for that reason.

All the rest stops around here have baby changing stations.
I've changed all three of my nephews on rest stop and store changing stations and they have never got sick from any of them. Now if it was obviously dirty I'm not going to use it but otherwise I'm not worried about it. If you're really worried they make those pads now that you can put down first.
