DS got his in 6th grade. DD got her's in 5th and the only reason for that was they were going on a 3 day field trip and instagram was going to be used for updates and such.
I get the argument for not getting hooked on social media too soon. However, in this day and age where social media is used as a communication tool it's kind of hard to keep them off. One of ds' teachers in 7th used instagram as a communication tool to post pics of work examples and such.
I follow both of them on all of their accounts.

DS has been asking for a while since he has an older sister. i made her wait till 13 for FB since that is what the rules said. by the time she was 13, she didn't even want it and has never had a FB account. i did let her get instagram at 12 because i didn't know what it was and thought it was just an app with some cool filters.... i suggested she get it so we could use it for pics. didn't do my parenting research there thought she was not allowed to post any pics of herself until grade 9 and could only be friends with people she actually knew. fast forward to DS, starting grade 6 this year.... he has been begging for instagram or snapchat for about a year and ALLLLLL his friends have it (not true). he just turned 11 end of august and i consulted with DD and she suggested snapchat was better for his age and more private so he got it. he has 3 friends, one is DD and other is DD's boyfriend. i would say if she isn't asking.... no way i would be suggesting. it will happen all on it's own.
