My dd is 10 going into grade 6 next week. She'll be 11 in 5 weeks. I have an Instagram a/c and I've noticed that so many of her friends are on it. They post cute photos from camp or on vacation. I've started following some of her friends and she is happy to look at their photos from my Instagram a/c, but she has more friends there than I've followed. Wondering if she'd enjoy an a/c.
I've heard such bad things about getting your kids hooked into social media. Right now it seems innocent and fun. She isn't asking for it but she enjoys looking. Is it dumb of me to suggest her own a/c? Is it all just bad news?

No, I would not set up an Instagram account for my 10/11yo.I would hold off on the social media blasts as long as possible. Mine were 8th & 10th grades before accounts were set up.

Good thing you are thinking about it now because if many of her friends are doing it then it might not be long before the topic comes up. Instagram guidelines state you must be 13 years of age.

I think most social media sites say 13.

I would not let my daughter do it. Its a can that once you open, you cant shut it again.
I think that even at 13, that is too young.

My DD is 10 and going into 5th grade. She will need to wait until she is 13 yrs old before she get an account. Crossing my fingers that she will lose interest by then....

My dd was 15 when she got her first Instagram account. Better to be safe than sorry.

My son had one at 10 and stupidly I didn't make him delete it. Even though I have banned FB until the kids are 13, it didn't occur to me to do the same with Instagram. I'm an idiot. I asked my (now nearly 12yo) son recently whether he sees much pornography on the internet, and on what sites, and he said there is heaps on Instagram, it's the worst for pornographic pictures. (I'm not entirely sure what a 12yo thinks "pornographic" is, it's probably nude pics.) So don't make the same mistake as me, don't let your daughter get it.

OK, I just went and asked my son (he of the pornographic pics ^^^^^) and he said as long as your daughter doesn't follow random people and doesn't let random people follow her, she should be safe. It would be up to you (if you let her) to monitor it closely and make sure she's only following her friends posting cute puppies etc.

My 10 year old (almost 11) has Instagram but it is only accessible by my phone.
Some of his friends are on it, mostly aunts, cousins & he follows a few of his favorite sports people.
He will get some random friend requests but his account is private & I decline those people he doesn't know.

In my house, social media is something we would rather wait on. It is my opinion that social media is not just dangerous for tweens because of strangers who could access them, but because of how people they know can use it.
Tweens and young teens in my opinion don't tend to have the judgment and the developmental maturity to handle situations that might arise. I see so many adults who can't hack it on social media and get sucked up into this endless cycle of drama and misery. It is my intent to try to avoid exposing my child to that for a while.
I also don't want to reinforce her inherent fear of missing out by providing her with access to social media just for the purpose of seeing what other people are doing on social media.
I did set her up with google chat on her phone so she could keep in touch with some friends when they can't be together since they live in a different town. I monitor that pretty heavily.

Why open that door if she isn't asking for Instagram? Don't be in a rush to open social media up to her, she has plenty of years ahead of her to get involved in that.

The tag? #gradschool I don't care if my kid looks at titties. But looking at a woman imposing herself on a coke bottle is too much for even me.

A few boobs here and there is not going to make me clutch at my pearls. We found a picture on DS's iPad a year or so ago of a naked woman inserting a cucumber. I was horrified. He'd got it from Instagram.

Social media all requires one to be 13 or older to set up an account - or to lie about your birthdate (not something I'm okay condoning - ymmv). At least in the States, it's due to the COPPA - which "imposes certain requirements on operators of websites or online services directed to children under 13 years of age, and on operators of other websites or online services that have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information online from a child under 13 years of age."
My youngest has NO social media - she's 9, almost 10 and she knows the rule is 13.
My middle is 16 - she has had FB since 13 (I helped her set it up on her birthday - that way I could make sure the privacy settings were tight) and Twitter/Tumbler since she started high school. As far as I know she doesn't have Instagram (although I'm not naive enough to think that she couldn't have it without my knowledge) but she also doesn't have a smartphone so no apps.

Your sweet little girl is soon going to be a tween and that is when cliques are formed, jealousy raises it's ugly head and mean girl behavior starts. I was a totally weird kid and I know I would have seen parties I wasn't invited to, my best friend taking a fun trip with a new friend, etc. etc. I would want to protect my kid from hurt. Just my 2 cents.

There is a ton of porn on IG. You can be on private all you want but if you start searching hashtags especially popular ones say #Olympics2016 or #backtoschool2016 you will find porn. People who post the pics and videos know others search the popular hashtags and they stick them on porn pics. It's a each way to get views that way for them.

My kids each have one. They are 5 months, 3 years, and 5 years. I post photos weekly on them for the grandparents and aunts and uncles. They are linked to their email accounts, that were set up at the hospital the days they were born.
Now when they get older and want to post on their own it will be another story!

I'm not allowing my 13 yo to have social media for now. She hasn't asked since we had a discussion about reasonings. She just doesn't need it and has a full and active social life without it. My 11 yo hasn't asked or seemed interested yet.

My children are much too busy with their gifted and talented Mensa magnet school programming, A level travel teams, donating time each week ministering to the homeless and attending Chinese school in the evenings (their fourth language) to even know what Instagram is.
I guess that's just the burden of having exceptional children.

Question:
If you post a photo on Instagram and include a hashtag, can anyone see your photo if they search that hashtag? What if your a/c is private?

Question: If you post a photo on Instagram and include a hashtag, can anyone see your photo if they search that hashtag? What if your a/c is private? P. If the acct is private then no you can not see the pics even with a hashtags. Hashtags on IG can be useful...like say I want to find other card makers on there I will search #cardmaking then it will pull up everyone who used that hashtag (with public acct) then I can see their work, comment and "like" the pic. I will say if you're worried about the porn aspect IG is really good and quick to remove the pics/videos. Another idea is you can set up her acct on your phone and check what she's searching and who she follows and follows her. Even if you have your own acct you can have multiple ones where you just switch back and forth without the pain of having to resign in.

So I looked on some hashtags and saw no porn. Wondering if it can be innocent. It CAN be. Porn posters pick up on popular hashtags and it seems to go through 'phases' where that hashtag will get a lot of porn and then it will die down as they move on to another one. I must admit I rarely look at hashtags because I follow so many people. But there is no way to disable it. If your daughter isn't asking for an account, I wouldn't worry about it yet. Her looking with you is a good opportunity to talk to her about being safe online, what to post, who to share it with etc.
