I've always used CM albums for the kids. Their albums have always been school, activities and friends - never family stuff. I can usually get 4 years to an album. My oldest graduated from HS with 4 albums. Fastforward and I am so behind with the other 2 kids. I'd really like to switch over to a PL/D ring style, but feel bad because I still have a couple CM albums to use up yet. But I can't help but think it would be quicker to use divided protectors and have the ability to just slip the photos into pockets vs. taping everything to the page, etc. Obviously I can still mix in traditional with the PL pages. It's really a no brainer so why do I feel funny about making the switch? It's ok to not use an album right?

I would do what makes it easiest for you. The only album my son has that is just him is a school album. I started it in a post bound and that lasted through 6th grade. I may switch everything into a 3 ring because it will hold everything in one album.

There should be no do's and don'ts in scrapbooking. It should be whatever makes you happy. Go for it! Switch and you will be happy that you did.

Note I have only one child, use 3-ring albums, & incorporate various size & configurations of page protectors to hold extra photos/memorabilia. Since you don't use identical photos/patterned papers/embellishments on your younger children's layouts that you did in their older sibling's album, you should likewise not feel obligated to choose the same brand album/page protectors. Simply donate the unused CM albums & enjoy scrapping the stories of their lives!
