The landline phone rang and the caller ID said my own name! With the house phone number, not my cell phone. [insert Twilight Zone music] Dd and I looked at each other for a minute, then I answered. It was my credit card company (supposedly) calling with a "special offer" to lower my interest rate. They've left me messages about this before and of course I ignore them. But how the heck did my name get there in the caller-ID? Is this a new tactic by telemarketers to get us to pick up the phone? My dd immediately said "lock the basement door!" and "lock the back door!" and "it's that movie 'When a Stranger Calls'"!!! lol. and I do remember the old movie, vaguely, so I read the wiki about it. There's been a remake also. But the wiki description of the original had me and . lol. Now I was going to go down to our basement pantry area and see if we have any canned tomatoes for tonight's enchiladas. But I think I'll just pick another can when I go to the store for a couple other ingredients. Because the pantry is in the laundry room which is down the stairs, and through the main room, down a small hall, past the dark furnace area.... in other words waaaaay far away from safety. eta: I've been reading the comments on the BBB site article that I linked farther down. Seems like it's a common newer thing, and not only are the scammers using our own phone numbers to show up in caller ID, they're also using other people's numbers. .

There is a way to spoof a phone number so the actual number doesn't show up but the number called does. Don't remember the peculiars right now how it is done. You can find how on google.

Did you ask the person that called? That would freak me out too.

Christine, it was a robo-call, not a real person. Just like in that link I posted. Wouldn't it be nice if these scammers would apply their talents to something beneficial?? ugh

Wow, that's sneaky. I never answer numbers I don't recognize, but I'd definitely answer if my number came up.

Well, since my number is blocked, it will be funny to see it try and come through. I use that Nomorobo and it blocks all telemarketing calls. Including charities. It may ring once but then it drops off. It is funny because if the call is dropped, the phone will ring again with another number immediately which is also dropped.

Mike Rowe calls me all the time. I never answer, because I love him so much that I would be tongue tied. So I just let it ring and hope Mike Rowe will leave an adoring message on my machine. He hasn't yet, but I know he will.
This one made me laugh!
Not to change the subject but a little story about Mike Rowe. My husband does letters for Eagle Scouts in our Troop. When the boys have completed their project my husband finds out who are some of the people the boys admire and he writes to them asking for a letter of congratulations for the Eagle Scout. He gets such a huge response from people. The boys have gotten them from the President but their favorite one is always from Mike Rowe. Every scout everytime. It really is a good letter. Nice that they take the time to do it for the boys.
Sorry for the hijack

When I used to get the hang up call on my answering machine, I used to call him my "boyfriend" who is too shy to leave a message. Oh how I have pined for him. Now, if a call like that gets through and my 11 year old ds hears it he yells "Mom, your boyfriend called".

We just had a news report about this.
I love caller ID. It's worth every penny on my landline.

I had a call like that, but the number for a local hospital showed up on caller id. I answered, and it was a real person, and once I figured out it was a telemarketer, I demanded to know how they changed the caller id. That person claimed the had no idea what I was talking about, so I demanded a supervisor. That person also claimed to not know what I was talking about, so I got all their info and demanded that persons supervisor. I was put on hold, and (not so shockingly), the call was disconnected. I called the non emergency police line and reported it. They were happy I got so much info on the company, as they had had several calls about it, but not much info to go on. A few days later, there was a news segment about it.

Yes, that has happened in my town too! Like has been said in this thread, it is a scam involving spoofed numbers. It would be pretty freaky seeing my own phone number on Caller ID so I am glad it hasn't happened to me yet. I generally don't pick up the phone when it is a number I don't recognize (I've gotten SO many calls from "Mircrosoft" about my computer being broken, about great new interest rates, about how I can get a lawsuit against doctors who performed my bladder mesh surgery--which I've never had, by the way, etc.) because I am out of patience!

That would irritated the crap out of me. However, not all spoofed numbers are nefarious. I put in an emergency notification system for my former company. The calls would originate from the software company's data center which was in San Diego, so people wouldn't answer the phone becasue of that. So we spoofed the number to our corporate phone number, and that helped tremendously.

The software to autodial and sub in the dialed number over the calling number is only $35 on the internet... Makes my job even harder.

My Dad got a call from his home line too shortly after he returned from visiting my mom's grave. The funny thing is the phone account is still in her name. We joked that she forgot to tell him something!

I have seen my own phone number show up on my caller I.d. I always think, "look, I'm calling myself!". I never answer it.

This type of spoofing the number it calls has been around a long time, it happened to me at least three or more years ago. Totally freaked me out to see my own phone number showing on the caller ID. The one good thing about it is that if you see your own number on the caller ID, it is guaranteed to be a scam, and you should not answer at all. Let it go to voice mail. I have a Panasonic phone that lets me block up to 30 numbers as well as all calls that don't identify the number. Once they stop calling (eventually), I can delete the older blocked numbers and add new ones, but so far I am only up to 9. I am not sure what I would do about the one that is my own phone number, though.

I received a phone call from my own name and phone number. Weird because my number is unlisted. I thought it was a certain pain the ass family member. I received one of those credit card scam calls last night. These people are super scary.

It happened to me once last week. It said incoming call where the name would be, but it was my landline phone number. Freaked me out too. This is the first I've heard of it happening to anyone else.

I couldn't part with my land line, so I cut down to just basic service and no longer have caller ID, so whether I have had that happen, I have no way of knowing. I NEVER ever answer my land line, all my friends or anyone I know, uses my mobile. I still do have a answering machine, so if someone did call that I knew, they would leave a message, so not answering has never been an issue. That said, some of the people that do call, and the recorded messages they leave me makes No, I don't want a scooter, life line, new windows, carpet cleaned or lower rates on my card. No, I don't want to know about all the break-ins in my neighborhood nor do I want a alarm system installed. The so called do not call list is a joke.

I can talk to myself whenever I want to; I don't need to call me too. I wouldn't bother answering.

I got that too, once. It was weird. It was my home phone number calling my home phone. Mostly I get Jose Gardner calling with the same town digits. Jose never wants to talk to me though. He's rude!!
