I have by my SIL and I am NOT happy...I hate getting wet (except in the shower!), especially with ice and/or ice water. Has anyone else been challenged? Was it as awful as it looks? I'm afraid!! But it's for a great cause, so I'll do it. I hope this link works. ALS Challenge

NO not yet but I've heard of it ! All my nieces and nephews on Facebook have been doing it. The first "aunt" just got nominated so it might be moving in my generations direction now. Dreading it ! Looks really cold !

There have been lots of stories about various forms if this. People were dying this spring because it involved jumping into still frozen lakes/rivers. The latest one is kids dousing themselves with rubbing alcohol and setting themselves on fire.
The thing is that 90% of the time no money is donated and most if the charities don't want to be associated with these challenges.

No, and if someone did, I'd ignore them or call "them" out for encouraging the foolishness. It's the internet equivalent of a chain letter, and a fad that has the potential to be fatal. Dumping ice cold water on someone can make them stop breathing. Yes, raising money for ALS is a great cause - so what it does say about people that they would rather dump ice water on their heads than donate money to charity? What kind of mixed up message are people sending?

Nope - I'd pay the $100 before I dropped an ice bucket on my head anyway.
I guess I don't get why everyone is doing it - you have to either do it or pay $100....why does the charity want everyone dumping ice on their head? Wouldn't they rather get $100 from everyone? It seems a little backwards to me.

It seems a little backwards to me. They don't. I read an article on this, and the charity wanted nothing to do with it. In that area, the charity was not contacted before the "challenge" started, so they started getting calls, but had no idea what they were about. They did appreciate getting their name out there, and the jump in donations, but they did not appreciate being associated with the challenge they did not approve.
I have seen several responses on FB, where instead of a video of the 'water challenge' it was a video of the person saying why they won't do it, and that they would rather give the full donation.

Something called the "Cold Water Challenge" was all over my FB newsfeed about a month ago. Fortunately, nobody called me out. I will give to charity without freezing myself to death.

I think it's incredibly stupid, and no charity would rather see someone do this than get a donation; makes no sense for them. And, I wonder about the risks of someone doing this and possibly dying.

I don't like it because I don't like being coerced to donate to a charity. I donate, for a reason, to the places of my choosing. I don't think it's right to "force" anyone to donate money to anyone.

I think it's stupid.
If love to know if the charity has actually seen any money from this.
I doubt it.
It's just like those stupid FB games where women post ridiculous status like "I like it on the kitchen counter" or "i need a tampon" and then say "oh, but it's to raise awareness for breast cancer".
Yea, right. That's sooooo helpful.

Where I live, it originally started around the time people were doing Polar Plunges (a yearly, recognized event where money DOES go to charity) in response to the Polar Vortex; but then I noticed people in hot weather states started with the ice buckets.
Seems dumb to me. And I've seen it for any charity the people want.

I'm very glad I read all the responses before I doused myself!!! I was feeling pretty bad for NOT wanting to do it, and now I'm not!
ALS is a great charity, which is why we chose them to donate our old car to...I think I'll skip the dousing and call it even Steven for the car!!!
Thank you all for the cyber bitch slaps that brought me back to reality:))

My BIL was called out to do a "Fire and Ice Challenge" where our local firefighters were raising funds for one of their fellow firefighter's baby girl who has cancer. Regardless of whether or not the ice challenge was completed, a donation was made by each firefighter. This then trickled into family members donating too. I don't mind this spin off of the original idea -- in the Florida heat, no one seemed to mind. The silly part was how resourceful the guys were...most chose their recycling bin as their dunk tank.
