Can they be repaired? Or should I just suck it up and buy a 3rd Kindle?
I use it A LOT. And I miss it. Last night in bed I had to *gasp* hold a book in my hands, rather than have the Kindle read the book aloud to me.

My dd has a loose port on her 1st kindle and it wouldn't hold the adapter to charge- but it happened right away- within a month of buying so Best Buy replaced it... now we have square trade on the others we bought through Amazon.
How old is your kindle? Do you have the extended warranty?

I did not buy an extended warranty I don't believe. I guess it's worth checking with Amazon to see. I know that it's over a year old.

sharlag, what are you doing with that Kindle in your bed that is so rough on it? LOL!
I had to read a real book the other day and did not like it at all. They had a sale of Paperwhites the other day. I wonder if it is still running?

Amazon is really good about support - even if it's out of warranty they might offer you a great deal on a paperwhite. That's what happened with my mom when her last Kindle broke for whatever reason.

sharlag, what are you doing with that Kindle in your bed that is so rough on it? LOL! The first one, I think I went to climb into bed, and put the weight of my hand on it. It was under the blankets. I imagine I did something similar to this newer one. I slide it under the pillow on the edge of the bed to charge (God forbid I reach 4 more inches and set it on the night table.) Probably me or a dog bent the port when it was charging.

Definitely contact Amazon about it. They have replaced 2 of mine, free of charge, with refurbished models. One was the original Fire and the other was the second generation. My original Fire was over 18 months old, well out of warranty.

Have you tried using another mini USB? I'm on my 2nd Kindle Fire as well for the same reason - charger wouldn't charge. When it happened to the second one, I just started using a mini USB from another device and it works.

ok, I'll try a different charger. If that doesn't work, I'll call Amazon.
The charger works if I pinch the opening and bend it back. Well, I don't have the hand stamina for that.

It's a known problem. I'm on my 5th (between the regular kindle and the fire)and both are not charging again. Amazon wouldn't do anything for me anymore.
So I sucked it up and bought an iPad. With an iPad I can have the kindle app and Oyster. I'm pretty happy with it and should have done it sooner. I love e-ink and would love a paperwhite. But after my previous experiences, I'll stick with the iPad.
While I'm glad amazon did replace the devices a few times, to me good customer service means not having to contact customer service.

No other advice than to agree with the others - call Amazon. I know I would be lost without my Kindle Fire - it's been my 'computer' since April when Windows quit support on XP. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Another vote to call them. Their customer service rocks. If you don't have a paperwhite, push for a deal on that! Love mine and never had a issue with charging port. Good luck!

I had quite a few regular kindles replaced. Got a Kindle HD over a year ago, and now it the port seems a little loose. I'd call them. It is a really annoying issue.

Another vote for the Paperwhite and amazing customer service! I love my Kindle, I'm reading a real book now because it's not kindle-ized and I miss the Kindle experience.

I wanted to get a paperwhite even though my second Fire is now a paperweight because of the problem. However, hearing that someone has went through five Kindles, I don't think I'll bother. I cannot believe that Amazon is incapable of finding a solution to such a significant problem.

Funny that I posted about the Paperwhite sale a bit ago. My sweet dh surprised me by ordering one for me!! I have been using my K3 for several years and I have been noticing some charging issues. I am so excited!

We have 3 kindle fires. Each has been replaced once (free of charge) by Amazon. My daughter was 7 months into her 2nd Kindle Fire when the charge issue happened. Again. I called and they refused to honor the warranty (they said the warranty follows the first Kindle which is well over a year out). Now we have a paperweight instead of a Kindle. I like the mini USB charger idea. I'm willing to try that!

Disappointing! But I agree it's worth contacting Amazon. Mine is the old keyboard model, nearly 3 yrs old and still working fine. Hope I don't have to replace it any time soon.

My Kindle had the same problem. I looked on line and found a video of how to fix it link and was going to have a friend help me with the repair. I took off the back cover and realized that when I plugged in the charger, it worked great with the back cover off. My DH said I should probably put the cover back on so I wouldn't get "fried", so I did. Now I charge the Kindle with it propped up and put pressure on the connection part of the charger cord that is rigid and it works! I was hesitant to take the cover off, but if it doesn't work at all, at least you could try it. I think the problem is that the charger port becomes loose to the mother board, so if you can maneuver the port to somehow charge, it will work.

Everyone I know with kindles has had the same problem. Why don't they fix the issue? It seems crazy to ignore the flaw and have the keep replacing kindles.

How about iPhones? Mine charges under a pillow every night next to the Kindle? Also, maybe I did NOT brake the charging port after all! According to several responders here, it's a recurrent issue.

Does the iPhone get hot?
I know my tablet and android phone have both gotten really hot under my pillow. I don't know what causes the problems on some, but not the others

Neither devices feel hot. The Kindle sometimes feels warm. It's cozy.

People tend to hear about (and remember) the issues more than the good experiences. My family of four have been Kindle users since the second generation. We have given them as gifts and upgraded our own just to have the better model, not because of problems. We've had every kind of Kindle except the first generation, and we also do not have the latest Fire. I tallied up how many we have purchased for ourselves and others: 11. Not one of them has had a problem.

We had/have 3 Kindle Fires and two have been replaced once with one of those being replaced a third time. The other one has not broken. The ones that were replaced were replaced well out of warranty. When we started having issues with them, my DH escalated the call and told the person that it was a known issue, he knew it was a known issue and he wanted them replaced and they were. It's been the same the other times we had problems. Now, he has amazing luck getting things replaced. If I tried that they would tell me to pound sand! I have moved on to Samsung and don't use the Fire anymore, but my kids still use 2 of them. We keep one as backup because I don't think there's any way they will replace them again!

Sharla- I wasn't clear in my post. I was going to attempt to do the repair, but all I did was take off the back cover! Try it. Take off the back cover, plug in the charger and wiggle the port with the charger cord attached. Try it! You don't have anything to loose. Amazon does not do repairs, nor would they give me any deals.

My mom did have her original Kindle replaced with a discounted paperwhite - after she'd had her original Kindle for 3+ years. Everyone else I know that has a Kindle has never had any issues.

OK, samantha25, I see what you're saying. I think I can take the back off. It was all of the teensy prying and tugging that alarmed me after the back was removed.
