I just got a boy in Baton Rogue through floods, now the other boy is right in the path of a hurricane. The youngest anxious kid is off to college. His first exciting experience? A hurricane. Oy. My hair is getting grayer by the day. (For the record, I am worried, but not totally freaked out. The boy is surrounded by family up there, and is probably in one of the safest places he can be. The rain bands with the worst of the weather are predicted on my side of the gulf coast which would be pretty much be the entire way they would be driving home, so I prefer he stay where he is. But good gravy, a hurricane the first week of classes?? )

Lots of positive, safe thoughts to all the Anxious family. (((hugs))) I'd be going grayer as well. But most likely, he'll be just fine and have a fun story to tell about his young college days.

Now I am slightly pissed and more worried-he just left to come home. He will be driving through the rain bands as they come in, and that just isn't safe but he thinks he knows what he is doing because he 'checked the weather and stuff.'
I swear, this kid just doesn't listen to every damn adult around him who has been dealing with storms all their lives and could probably help him out a little bit.

DH and I were trying to remember how many hurricanes affected Tallahassee and our trips there when ds1 was a freshman. He safer staying in there. I think the parking lots flooded, but that was at the old softball field. DS had a daredevil roommate who liked to drive to the eyes. At least he did not do that!
Good luck with your sons to be anxious about!
Edit: just saw that he's driving. DS2 pulled that one. At least you have all of us being anxious along with you.

One of those "I'm going to kill you after I hug you" moments? Keeping him in my thoughts!

(((Hugs))) I will pray that everyone stays safe! Doesn't he understand that he is in more danger from mommy fall-out when he arrives home after driving through the storm than he is from the weather if he stayed at school? (Geez, what am I saying? He's a college-aged boy, so of course he doesn't get that! )

Please update when he arrives so we know he's safe. Damn teens are fearless and think they know everything.

I was told after our last flurry of texts that I need to put at least $10 in the swear jar. So yes, a smack upside the head before the hug. (on a tangential note: is 'upside the head' a regional thing? )

My unimpressiveness (yup, made up word) with this storm remains.
Remember that random tropical depression in June that flooded everything but nothing closed?! I took me forever to get home that day!
Today, I get a day off, and just go back from running errands. No rain, light winds. Even some sun!
So I'm pretending today's day off is to make up for that day in June we all should've been hunkering down. cause I'm still pissed about that day!

I'm going to bring in a long ladder and help you off the ceiling that you must be clinging to like a cat. Just remember, that this cycle of stress will end and calm will enter the building. Your boy will be fine and hopefully things in general will make a huge change for you now.

Good thoughts to you and your boy. Hope his trip home to receive his beating is uneventful.
I lived in Bradenton for awhile and just saw pictures and videos last night of flooding there. It is crazy. Good thoughts sent to the state of Florida, hope you all dodge the bullets with these storms.

(on a tangential note: is 'upside the head' a regional thing? ) We say Gibbs Slap, but obviously that's not so old! I can picture my son doing this, and given our location (North Texas), looking over his shoulder at the storm cloud the entire time, like he was going to out drive it. Give him a tight hug first!

Waiting anxiously with you that he makes it home safely.
When he arrives knock him upside the head from this mommy of late teen stubborn boys. I'm in the south and that is a very common phrase for me too.

Good thoughts sent to the state of Florida, hope you all dodge the bullets with these storms. My brother's back yard is already flooded. He is in an area that got almost a foot of rain yesterday. Where I am, I will get a lot less weather-but it sure won't stop raining. My unimpressiveness (yup, made up word) with this storm remains. Remember that random tropical depression in June that flooded everything but nothing closed?! I took me forever to get home that day! Today, I get a day off, and just go back from running errands. I always laugh-Florida is AWESOME for disaster preparedness. With a storm coming, they are johnny on it and have plans in place down to the smallest details. But when it comes to the funky, where the hell did you come from storms? Catches us with our pants down every time. From what I understand, the worst of the storm weather is supposed to happen this afternoon and tomorrow. They are saying that I will get a lot of rain here, and I am further inland.

(on a tangential note: is 'upside the head' a regional thing? ) Not that I'm aware of. I've said through several states, myself. I swear, this kid just doesn't listen to every damn adult around him who has been dealing with storms all their lives and could probably help him out a little bit. I'm quietly hugging you and passing you the swear jar. I may add to it myself.

When he gets home, (after recovering from big slap), tell him to choose his Legos and work on a pile of things to donate.

It was steady, steady, steady all day, but had no clue about the cumulative amounts until my brother sent the picture of his yard with a good 8-10 of standing water.

The bigger question is: how will the weather affect college football games? JK
Hope your boy and everyone in the path of these hurricanes/tropical depressions are okay. That includes those in Hawaii as well as the southeast.

I hope he makes it home safely! Sometimes these kids don't think things through.
I was in a hurricane my first year of college and I swear my mother must have crawled out of her skin. We didn't even get the bulk of the storm. The college kids sure treated it like play time though. There were lots of idiots out playing in the rain and wind that day running all over campus excited that they were in a hurricane for the first time in their lives. At least your son is one of those kids, right?

Is he close yet? The first bands are moving in here! They extended the Tropical Storm warning all the way down through Venice, now? cadoodlebug , Joy, everything should be moved through by tomorrow, so I don't see any game delays, at least in the SEC. I'll take a look. The NFL had moved tonight's Bucs game to last night.
