Fortunately I have heard of this before and was not quite a freaked out as DH was when we were landscaping this weekend. While working in the front of the house, we inadvertently dug up St. Joseph, who was buried in the front yard! We're not 100% sure where exactly where he was, as we found him in the wheelbarrow of dirt we had dug up. DH came to me with him in a plastic bag and said, "Um...look what I found!" I suspect he was right under the front window, to be close to the for sale sign. Anyway, like a good Pea I googled, and found lots of information about him and selling houses and why you put him in the ground with his feet toward heaven (AKA - head first!), but I'm not able to find out what the proper procedure is when you FIND him! Coincidentally, we found him almost a year to the day we put in our initial offer to buy the house! I would love to know which owner put him there. We were the third people to put an offer on our home before a contract stuck.

You are not supposed to leave it buried!!! YOu're supposed to dig it up once the house sells and give it to a friend who is selling her house. Holy moly!

St. Joe really worked for us. Sold our big waterfront home in 7 days then our mountain cabin in 4 days. But when we went to dig him up, I couldnt find him.

The person who sold the house was supposed to dig him up and give him a place of honor in the new house. I'm not sure what you should do with him!

I've heard about burying him - never heard what you do afterwards, or if you find him?!
Anxious to hear what the experts say (aka the Pea's).

Our house had been on the market for quite a long while, so we buried St. Joseph, and it sold in a couple of weeks. I would save him, in a place of honor, until you decide to move again and put this house on the market.

Toss it. I don't believe in it. MIL tried to get DH to bury one at our last house before we listed it but I refused. We still sold the house, with multiple offers over asking, just a few days after listing. And no, DH didn't sneak bury it. He knows better. Lol

I buried one for my friends who moved out of state and their house that had been sitting on the market sold not long after. I dug it up and passed along to someone else who was selling their house.

We dug one up Landscaping too. We gave it away to someone selling thier house.
What's a weird coincidence we used to get people driving by ( on a cul-de-sac ) stop and ask us if we wanted to sell. It stopped when we dug him up and gave him away.
Though when people were asking us it was the height of the market and our neighborhood was a hot neighborhood. But coincidence or not the queries stopped after we dug him up and the market crash was not for another 4 years.
The coincidence stil irks my Jewish husband because they don't believe in Saints. Lol

Lol I don't believe in it either, BUT it would be funny to bury it and post a picture on Facebook to mess with my non-Catholic relatives. Realistically, if I did find one, I'd throw it away.

We just sold our house this summer and we bought a St. Joseph statue. The kit it came in was great. It said it doesn't matter how you bury him or where but the prayer for his intercession is important along with cleaning your house, making repairs, getting a good agent, and anything else required to sell a house. The directions said that once the house sold you needed to dig him up and put him in a place of honor in your house. We are Catholic so he is sitting on our piano next to a statue of Jesus and one of Mary.
If I were you, I would see if a friend wanted it or if a Catholic school may want it.

Thanks for all of the replies! I am not Catholic, but for some reason, I can't bring myself to get rid of it. Both my mom and my aunt (also not Catholic) were telling me that we should not even throw away the bag he was in. I don't think I can take it that far. The bag can probably go...
We have a screened in porch that leads to our front door, and we have a baker's rack out there. I think he will be put there. Today marks the one year anniversary of the date we put the offer in on the house, so it's funny that we found it almost a year to the day. We will smile every time we pass by him.

I've never heard of that, but does anyone know whether there is a finding-a-new-job saint that I can bury?

RedSquirrelUKUmmm not to bury but ... St Joseph is also a patron saint for workers. Prayer to St. Joseph patron saint of workers for Employment Dear Saint Joseph, you were yourself once faced with the responsibility of providing the necessities of life for Jesus and Mary. Look down with fatherly compassion upon me in my anxiety over my present inability to support my family. Please help me to find gainful employment very soon, so that this heavy burden of concern will be lifted from my heart and that I am soon able to provide for those whom God has entrusted to my care. Help us to guard against bitterness and discouragement, so that we may emerge from this trial spiritually enriched and with even greater blessings from God. Amen. Or Saint Catejan (Cayetano ) patron saint for job seekers Glorious St. Cajetan, acclaimed by all people to be the Father of Providence because you provide miraculous aid to all who come to you in need, I stand here before you today, asking that you present to the Lord the requests that I confidently deposit in your hands. May these graces that I know request help me to always see the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, knowing that God who dresses with beauty the flowers of the field and abundantly feeds the birds of the sky will give me all other things. Amen Saints are like apps there's a saint for everything

I don't believe it the power of the statue (especially since a PP said that the statue comes with instructions to clean, make repairs, and other things that actually help you sell your house lol), but If I were to dig him up on the one anniversary of bidding on the house I might find enough humor in the situation to give him a place in the garden or somewhere on the patio like you were planning on doing. It would make a great conversation piece!

We are also not Catholic, but are Othodox Christians, and St. Joseph is one of our "shared" saints. When we couldn't sell our house it was the height of the crash, DH had lost his job, we had 2 kids in college, and things were pretty grim. We buried our St. Joseph more as a lark in a dark time. We had so much fun scoping out the best place to plant him, and getting him all settled in nice and cozy. At that time, we just needed faith that things would get better. And life did get better! The house sold, DH got a great job, we moved to a fantastic area, and St. Joseph came along. Although I will say that FINDING where we buried him when we moved out was tricky, he almost got left behind.

I grew up Catholic (and am still recovering from it...) and this just kills me! For a religion that was prepared to burn "witches" as heretics and refuses, even now, to let nuns teach yoga because of its loose religious connections, there certainly are a lot of superstitions! Bury him feet to the sky...?
Also extra LOL at the instructions that came with the statue: clean your house, get a good agent, make repairs and do everything commonly known to help sell a home. But also pray. And if it sells, give all the credit to the prayer. Jiminey crickets this is absurd.
