And if it is still a thing, then do you think it will look dated in, say, 5-10 years? Also, I saw it run vertically recently, which was different, am I'm not sure how I feel about it.

It's still a thing. Particularly classic white. Not a fan of vertical in the least.

Subway tile is pretty classic - it's been around for decades. Sure, the recent surge in popularity made it more common than it had been for a while, but I don't think it ever went "out." That said, if you do subway tile, I think sticking with a more or less classic color/size/configuration is the wisest move. That vertical orientation will look dated quickly (and I don't like it anyway).

I think it's a classic look. I don't like it set vertically, but I do like the darker grout.

Yep its a thing and probably always will be. Darker grout is the way to go, and not using a vertical pattern.

Just put it in my kitchen for backsplash. I prefer white grout with the white tile. Clean and classic looking.

It's still a thing. I love it offset, or herringbone...not vertical.

Yep, still a thing. Although I never went gaga over it. I prefer squares, set traditionally or in a diamond pattern. But I'm boring like that.

I don't especially love subway tile, and probably would never use it in our house.

Just watch HGTV for a couple hours and you will know that subway tile is definitely still a thing Not a big fan of it the way it is shown in this picture though.

I do like the darker grout. I remember when mine was being installed as a backsplash in the kitchen. It looked so great before they put on the grout and then they put on the white grout. It looked better with more contrast between the pieces. I also prefer it horizontally and that is more classic.

I saw it set on the diagonal recently and can't decide if I like it or not. I don't care for the vertical, and agree that it will look dated. Horizontal is classic, and I don't think it will look any more dated than the other permanent fixtures in a kitchen or bathroom.

As I hope to add a backsplash to my kitchen using subway tile and a small accent tile running through the middle this post is making me happy! and FTR, I don't care for the vertical either.

Well I hope it's still a thing, I've just remodelled 2 bathrooms at home using subway tiles in the showers!!
I imagine it will look dated, but I'm not sure when. Hopefully longer than 5 years though!
I don't like the look of the vertical tiles.

I do watch quite a bit of certain shows on HGTV and didn't know if it was just those designers or were real people doing it, too. I may not get to remodel soon, but I'm gathering ideas. I do like the subway tile for in the bathroom, and I definitely don't like the vertical!

It's a classic. I plan to use it in traditional white in my kitchen remodel. It's period appropriate for my 1922 house and I'm looking forward to tearing out the god awful 1980s update.

That shower looks like it belongs in an institution.
If want it to last, don't do anything 'quirky'.

That shower looks like it belongs in an institution. If want it to last, don't do anything 'quirky'. Quirky is a good word. I think of that each time I see new diagonal wood wall panels. Diagonal anything might as well have a date plaque installed. It's always fun in the moment though. I like the look above, but would consider it rectangular tile.

I hope so because I just put a little grey with white grout in the kitchen and a white with light grey grout in the bath

Love subway tile but not vertically. It's classic. I don't like the current trends in tile going on now. Those, I believe, will be very dated very soon.

The vertical looks dated to me.
I like horizontal subway tile, especially when it has a accent/border row or two of some other color/texture of tile.

I think subway is timeless and classic. I just redid a bathroom with white tile and white grout. I just love it.
I really don't like it vertical. It looks very institutional.

Still classic, if it's ran horizontal like it's been for decades. The vertical adds a time period to it IMO of current day.
