My scrap room is a mess. My teaching stuff was put in there for storage, but not in anykind of order or organization. I have tried a couple different organization systems, but nothing has really worked for me. I have decided I am going to use the square shelving with baskets in them and just make it work.
Now DH says I can get the shelving when I get things organized, I think I need the shelving to get things organized. I see where he is coming from, do a purge and then it will make organzing easier, but I want to put the stuff away once I decide it is something I ma going to keep.
So would you organize first and then get the shelving or get the shelving and then organize?

If I had the time, I would take everything out of the room, set up the shelving, and then purge as you put it back. That would require someplace to put the stuff, though. I did this the last time I cleaned out my scrap/extra room. I started on a Monday, moved every single thing to the downstairs living room, put in the shelving and such, then purged as I organized and put it back. It took until Thursday, but that was also in between kid stuff.

My plan was to put everything on one side of the room because all the shelving will be on one side. Then go through everything and put it on the shelving. It is going to take some time, but I think I will be a very happy when it is all said and done. But I need the shelving first right ?

Purge first.
Then group your stuff however you want it.
Then put it away.
When you get the shelves is dependent on whether you will have room to put them together if your stuff is spread all over the room waiting to go into the shelves that you still need to build.

I do see your point about putting stuff away as you go through and decide what to keep. But I also see your husband's - it's hard to know exactly what you need storage and organisation wise until after you go through everything, get rid of the stuff you don't want/need and sort out the rest into categories to be stored.
OTOH, I wouldn't appreciate my DH telling me that I couldn't get shelving until I accomplished something - we're partners not a parent-child.

I'm hoping the "can get" is just a figure of speech, and that you can get the shelving whenever you like.
That being said, you really should organize and purge first, and then figure out storage space later. I like to use it as a sort of carrot to motivate me to purge faster. :-)

If you're going to the effort of moving things around, you should purge as you go. Like Flylady says, you can't organize clutter, you can only get rid of it. It will be so much more fun to put everything away into your new shelving if it's all ready to go.

I use the acronym SPACE (from Julie Morgenstern) when I take on these projects: "S" sort "P" purge "A" assign a home "C" containerize "E" equalize (maintain)
I also agree with the Flylady philosophy that you cannot organize clutter.

I'd do it this way.
The main reason is that you are truly judging each item on it's usefulness/merit. Do I REALLY need/want/use this?
Otherwise, with the storage in place first, I might be tempted to save more because, "I have room so I might as well."

Are you getting the same amount of shelving and supplies no matter what? If so, it does not matter when you get them. The outcome of purchasing them is equal. If you are buying them according to what you need to store after you decide (the method often recommended by magazines and tv shows), then purge and sort first. Personally, i am with you. I would get them to make the process easier.

I get what every one else is saying, but I would need to get the shelves so I could put my stuff away as I was organizing/purging.
I would still have the piles of keep/donate/purge, but I need to see progress as I am going along. Having the stuff I am keeping sitting in a pile on one side of the room wouldn't work for me, but that is just me. I get overwhelmed when things are messy and cluttered, and a pile of stuff in a corner would be clutter to me.

Professional organizers always say to purge and organize before you buy containers and shelves, etc. One huge reason is you'll make purge/orgaizational decisions based on your space rather than the actual stuff. You will also waste time and money because you don't really know what you need. The only reason I might change that up is if you know the exact shelves you are getting for the space and you'd have to work with it regardless.
And, you didn't ask this, I know, but just in case you needed added support: if it were me and I was getting shelves for my room in my house, I'd go get the shelves when I wanted or needed the shelves, not on someone else's say so.

Sorry, I say purge first. As you go through it, place "like" things together. For example, put all your adhesives together, all your teaching supplies together, etc.
Then place on the shelving.
No amount of organizing will help if you have too much stuff.

I didn't do shelving, instead I bought the Recollections cubes/drawers. If I can figure out how to post a picture, I will.

I still say, if you have to assemble those shelves, do it when you'll have the floor space.
After the purge, but either before or after the organizing. That part makes no difference.
