So, here's my question. Is it possible to have a nice neat beautiful entrance hall that also serves as the mail room for the family? You know, with baskets or other storage thingies for each family member, so that everyone's papers won't end up on my kitchen table? There are 5 of us, and it's all too much. If you've seen it done (maybe you even have a space like this in your home?) could you describe it or post a pic, or just give me words of encouragement? Thanks

Thanks for the PB link. I guess what I want is a small console table, or maybe a small desk with a hutch. And I need some kind of holders for the mail that won't look junky. Maybe wall mounted?

I wasn't sure how tall your [assumed] kids are. I think I'd like wall mounted but if kids are shorter/younger that may not work as well. Foyer furniture and entry way organization will net a lot of images for ideas.

Okay, this might work. Maybe?
Wall mount magazine racks. One for me, one for him, and one for the kids. Three racks mounted vertically next to a small console table or desk. Still neat enough? Or would that look cluttered and junky?
Oh, and the kids are 16, 16, and 11. Tall enough.

I saw a really neat idea on the Nate Berkus show a couple years ago. He had an antique table that had shallow divided shelves under the table top that he used for mail. you could put a basket on each shelf and each person could have their own mail storage. if the baskets were slightly shorter than the shelf is tall you could slide the mail into the basket. that way who ever gets the mail can do it easily. and then you would have the top of the table for decorations or what ever you wanted to use it for.

Volt's Pottery Barn link had something with baskets underneath like you describe, dorichatelain. I think it would look nice and neat. My worry is that if the mail gets put into a drawer type of thing that it won't be noticed by its intended recipient. In contrast, something that's open on top would provide a visible reminder. Unfortunately, that's the same quality that makes it look like cluttery crap.
Am I not giving my family enough credit? I honestly think they won't look in the damn baskets unless I tell them to!

Here's another thought. What do you all think about stairway baskets? They each take up two steps, and they look like an upside down L.
Look too messy? Or a good way to organize a mess that would be there anyway? I'd need at least 3, but probably 5. That's most of the way up the stairs. Someone will fall and break their neck. Probably me.

I tend to prefer closed storage unless the items being stored have some redeeming artistic or nostaligic qualities that make them semi displayable. Without knowing your tolerances for visual mess, what kinds of messes you are trying to organize and how willing your family is to cooperate with your efforts it is hard to give advice. Not asking you to explain, just pointing out some areas to think about as you choose a set up.

Most of my mail goes straight into recycling. The bills get opened right away and I put them in payment order in a small standing letter holder. I don't have much of a foyer, more just a "foy," so I can't have anything there. Bills are in my kitchen where I remember (usually) to pay them.
