I am taking DD to NYC for her grade 8 graduation- but in getting ready today i went to get our passports and hers isn't there!! I am freaking out - I have torn my room apart- we usually keep the passports in a drawer in my room but it is not there the last time we used it was to sign her up for high school at the end of june- not sure if the passport can be renewed in that time- she is beyond upset - i feel so bad!!

Ugh, I really hope you find it in time. Check her school paperwork, maybe you just forgot to put it back.

Tore my house apart IN A PANIC on the eve of a trip once. I was SURE I knew where it was, but no. Turns out it was "hiding in full view" - tossed in a kinda-bowl on the dining room table where I toss screws and game pieces and other errant things that need to be put away properly. Could you have put it in a temporary holding cell like that after the school registration?

She's under 18, do you have a copy of her birth certificate handy? And is your entire trip within the US?

I hope it turns up, how nervewracking!
My oldest just got hers this spring for a trip to Italy with my sister. I was so nervous that something would happen to it before the trip.

I forgot my drivers license. I was able to fly with my Costco card, which had my pic on it and an old medical card that had my birth date on it. Does d have a school id. I had to go through an extra screen but made it both ways. I was freakin out because I had to make it to my dad's funeral.

I'm not sure if you're in the United States but you don't need ID for your 8th grader to fly. They don't even require a birth certificate. My 10th grader flew to Seattle with my MIL just a couple weeks ago no problem.

Some airlines require mom2tah, depending on fare, but by and large, yes, no ID specifically required. But a birth certificate copy in tow, within the US, would cover all bases of the overzealous agent.

Are you flying to NYC from outside the U.S? If not you don't need a passport. Are you from Canada?

What city are you in? My sister was able to get an expedited renewal for her dd rather quickly. 24 or 49 hrs. They did have to delay their trip a day.

Due to her use of the term grade 8 graduation, I believe the OP is in Canada.
I hope you're coming down from the panic with her passport in hand now.

Crikey! I hope it turns up. I couldn't find mine once, and it was in a pocket in the hand luggage bag I had used on the last trip I had taken. Took me 2 days to find it.

Look in the purse you used. Look in piles of mail. Look in those temporary holding bins and baskets. Look on the bookshelves. Look in your glove box and under the seat in the car. Look in the pocket of the light jacket you may have worn. Good luck.

If she is in Canada, don't think you need a passport to fly. Bring her birth certificate.

Hope you find it and enjoy your trip!

I think you do. Even driving between US and Canada you need a passport. We did it in June.

Grade 8 is said in Canada 8th Grade in the US
You do need a passport to fly and drive between the US and canada. I do both with young kids.

Here's hoping it turns up for the OP. We keep ours in a safe in a cupboard but sometimes one gets hidden in the mix of papers.

I am sure she's from Canada. "grade 8" vs "8th grade" is the dead giveaway.
And yes, we absolutely must have a passport to enter the US. Everything, even new born babies need one.
Hope it turns up soon!

My brother and his family go visit my cousins all the time by car and they DO NOT have passports. They do however have enhanced licenses which apparently are only issued by a couple states.

Yes - but you are coming IN to Canada. Our laws are different, as are your entry laws. Leaving Canada, and going into the US, a Canadian passport is required, when driving or flying. Unless you have a Nexus card (which involves a long application & interview process) because you travel frequently across the border.
