Love my Silhouette...but feel woefully inadequate. I just haven't explored a whole lot.
While scrapping the other day, I bought a cut file from someplace other than the Silhouette store not realizing at first it was an SVG file. So apparently I need a secondary program like the Designer Edition or Sir Cuts A Lot to cut it? I tried to trace and it's just too intricate.
What else can I do with the upgrade? What do I need to know? Is one place better than the other to buy it?

I would check the silhouette school blog or you tube about converting svg files into a file you can open in silhouette. I'm pretty sure there's a way to do it.
I use the designer edition of the program. Watch for sales or coupon codes and check Amazon, you should be able to get it at a discounted rate.

You can easily find the DE upgrade for around $25, which is quite a bit cheaper than SCAL or MTC.
DE has some amazing features, including the ability to "copy and paste" right onto the mat, instead of saving images and then opening them up on the mat. This is great if you are tracing files or doing print & cut.
DE has on screen rulers that make placement and design so much easier. The rulers also have pull out guide lines that are wonderful to use.
DE will open SVG and PDF files.
DE has the ability to save patterns in the pattern fill library - another great feature for print & cut.
DE has better knife and eraser tools. It has added rhinestone features. It has a shear tool and shader effects.
It also allow you to work in layers and lock layers down so you are not moving/selecting them when working on other parts of a design.
Swing Design is a good place to find it at the $25 price range. Go to their website. You will get a popup that will ask you to like their Facebook page. When you do - you get a 10% off coupon code to apply to the price of the Designer Edition. They will email you the code.
Make sure you purchase "DESIGNER EDITION" They have a couple other upgrades including Business Edition, and "Designer Edition PLUS".. which is super confusing because DE+ is an upgrade to the regular DE, and only really needed if you are using it in conjunction with embroidery or applique machines.

"I like big cuts and I cannot lie!" I bought the Designer Edition with my Silhouette. It is pretty easy to use. Amazon usually has it discounted. I took two classes from my LSS to learn how to use the Designer Edition and I am not sure what came with the machine and what was extra. YouTube is probably your best bet for good information.

I also have the DE - bought it when it was on sale and it makes some things a lot easier eg opening SVG files.

Here's some YouTube tutorials to help you import an SVG without Designer Edition- www.google.com/search?q=silhouette+cameo+opening+svg+dxf&biw=1600&bih=800&tbm=vid&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjArKGWloTPAhUHGD4KHVLNAa8Q_AUICigD&dpr=1I hope it's OK I linked a lot of videos. I would write a quick tutorial. I am tired and it would be a very interesting tutorial that would make no sense but be highly entertaining. Designer Edition is worth it IMO. I use MTC but I own different die cutters. That is a better software program for me. If I only owned a Silhouette then I would definitely have Designer Edition. I think in the last few years they have added so many features that it is one of the most powerful die cutting programs on the market. It is definitely worth the money, especially since it goes on sale so often. It is also one of the most frugal options for die cutting software too.

Too funny! I *do* know the correct name. Thanks for the tips and feedback. Hopefully I'll have time to scrapbook again this afternoon and download something to finish up my page.
