I have a job. Not one that I love but it pays the bills.

I have a career. I've worked in social services with kids and families since I got out of undergrad 25 years ago...my heart has always been in this work...I love it.

I have a career. But I'm at a point in my life when I'm not interested in moving up the corporate ladder, and I try to avoid taking my work home with me, although I occasionally do. I love what I do, and can't imagine doing anything else as a career. When I retire, I'll move into something similar as a consultant or perhaps I'll teach part time.

I had a career, then i took time off to have kids then I was lucky enough to dive back into a career. I love it and feel so fulfilled by it. Sometimes when I am exercising or relaxing I actually come up with "ah ha!" ideas about work and translate them into actions/ideas the next day. I do not neglect my family -- it is certainly possible to do both. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

I think many people would consider what I do a career, but for me it's a job now. I've got as far up the ladder as I want to go and have a good work/life balance but my work pays well enough to let me do the things I really enjoy - travel, pursue sports & hobbies etc.

I have a career, but some days people make it a pia job. I wouldn't trade or change it though.

I gave up my career a year ago. I now have a job, and I love, love, love the lower stress and not having to take work home with me and work all through my "off" hours.

Career. It was a conscious choice. I always wanted a career and never had any interest in a husband, children and the whole domestic rat race. Too self contained.
Love my work and what I do changes systems and and effects many, many lives.
It has been a good choice for me, but did end up with an S/O going on 26 years.

A Job. A great job that I really enjoy but still not a career. My DS is starting high school this year so I have a few years until I'm at the point of deciding if I'm satisfied with where I'm at or I want to go back to school and/or change paths. For now, I'm thrilled with where I'm at.

I had a career, but my family still came first.
I view the difference in the two is training.

I was starting a career when I decided I wanted to stay home with my kids. I did that for 19 years and now I have a very nice part-time job. I'm happy with that.

Definitely a job. At this point, I don't expect to have a career, ever. This work will never be that, even if I do it for years. I don't expect to retire from doing it (I don't expect to retire, period, ever, actually... just stop working, possibly not by choice due to health issues.)
So, just a job, and I'm okay with that.

It's a job I use to enjoy. Not so much lately because of lots of changes at work. Someday I hope it will be enjoyable again. Right now I'd settle for tolerable.

I'm not sure about the definitions, really. I have had jobs that I took home with me that were definitely not careers. I think a view a career as a long-term thing - planning my next move, training, looking for promotions in the same area of business. In which case, I am definitely in a 'job' as I have no interest in climbing the corporate ladder and moving up to a level where I don't get paid for overtime. I struggle with my work a lot of the time (because of some of the people I work with) and I really appreciate that I have managed to fill the rest of my life with things that make me happy. If my work started to take over that then I would be very miserable.
I used to think that it was a choice of either having children (and then having a smaller job) or climbing the career ladder. For medical reasons, I can't have my own children but I've realised that I don't want a career either.

Definitely a "job".
Some days I wish I had a career, the kind of thing where you can say "I am a ....... " instead of just "I work for ....... "

It is very interesting to read everyone's perspectives on the two. I have a job - I enjoy what I do, good pay and benefits and a contract to protect my rights. My career has always been my family.

I have a career and a job. The job is just for fun but the career is for fulfillment. I cannot imagine not pursuing a career. I believe my life would be less enriched and fulfilled if I hadn't pursued a career.
