I love lists of things to buy to make a great wardrobe that will work ... except they never work.
I realized the place to start is with that one perfect thing that you love, actually wear and that's near your face. Then you could add pieces to support that piece and go from there.
I've always wanted a cashmere cardigan but could never figure out what color. I know my best colors but I couldn't figure it out because mentally I'd think it would have to with that shirt or that skirt, etc.
It's dumb to never get the one thing you really want cause it won't work with the star. Now mentally it's falling into place. I want a berry colored cashmere cardigan!! I can see what I need to go with it and it would be fun to find a great scarf or two to go with it.
What is your star piece of clothing or jewelry? (Cause y'all are the peas so you probably figured this out years ago!)

I tend to stick to colors I love and mix them in with navy, black and khaki/camel.
I have a nice black jacket that goes with a suit for work. I wear it all the time, I often wear it with jeans or with a dress, or even with pants that aren't the suit pants.
I think the Berry Cardigan can go with a ton of things.. I would wear it with black, grey, navy or khaki.
I try to get one investment piece every year and then I get a few things that are more trendy or that I love.
I think I am getting a black wool coat this year.

A new coat sounds wonderful - do you know where you're going to shop?
I love clothes but I've been stuck forever. I don't even know where to shop any more.

I use the stylebook app to log my calendar and pre-plan what I'm going to wear everyday. Today I pre-entered until the end of the year. I discovered that I literally have no free days to wear any new piece of clothing I might see in stores. So I will be keeping this in mind and hope this convinces me to keep my credit card in my wallet. I wrote down on a piece of paper 6 items I bought this year and 6 items I bought last year that are favorites. Some are pricey so I really wanted to make sure I wore them at least once a month. It occurred to me that I made a capsule wardrobe but not in the sense of owning x number of versatile pieces. But rather I realized for the fall season I have 12 items that look flattering on my shape and I want to make sure they make the rotation often. The dresses I can wear with different colored cardigans. The tunics I can wear with leggings and boots, jeans or other pants. My star piece of jewelry is this necklace which I have in various colors. Here's the list: Diagonal Stripe Wrap Dress Purple Sheath Dress Orange Linen Shirt Dress Navy stripe dress Blue Belted shirtdress Floral Sheath Dress Red Tunic Purple Tunic Green Tunic Mustard Cable Tunic Sweater Yellow Gingham shirt Plaid Palette Shirt You said you're looking for a cashmere sweater, I have this one on my wishlist. Just waiting for it to go on sale.

I don't really have a star piece, but it's a good idea especially if you are looking to build a capsule wardrobe. I don't do capsule wardrobes because I don't do "seasons" with my clothes as much. Everything is in my closet all the time. if I need to throw a sweater over short sleeves, I do. Right now, I'm moving toward the darker colors with lots of white mixed in. More navy and black, but with other colors as well. I do a lot of dresses, so it's hard to have one piece be star. Dresses are kind of a one piece thing. I did just buy my first designer purse yesterday (Kate Spade! I'm in love!) It's red and white which works great with the black and blue and white I've already added to my wardrobe. I do see myself thinking about that purse as I'm shopping for new things too.

I've never worn jewelry other than my wedding ring until a good friend of mine made me try hers on. I still have problems picturing things on me but I did branch out and buy some.

I wondered the same thing. Or I'd plan to wear cream wool pants to work but wake up to find it's raining.... I gave up trying to plan what I was going to wear ahead of time when I worked.

My star piece of clothing, the center of all my outfits, are my black jeans and my LLBean black pants. hehe Yeah, not too trendy around here. I wear the black jeans to sub in, unless I have an older class (5th is the highest I'll sub) that I've never had before then I might wear the black pants instead of the jeans. Or maybe I'll even be bold and wear a skirt. But seriously, I almost always wear black pants of some kind and then change out the top. In summer I wear a short sleeved scoop neck style -- like a tee shirt but thinner -- with a jacket or long-sleeved shirt kind of thing. In winter I'll wear a long-sleeved scoop neck style. lol. Yep, bold fashion statement, that's me.

About a million years ago, I picked up a tissue thing grey cardigan at Target of all places. Thin is good for Florida-I wear it a lot in the winter, but I do have several other cashmere sweaters too. But I have to tell you, the majority of the ones I have I got at Goodwill. They ALWAYS have them. I generally run up there to pick up wool sweaters to felt and find all kind of cashmere too. I will buy them to felt, and end up keeping them for myself. I don't have a star piece, unless you consider the NYMJ boyfriend style jeans. I wear them all the time, dress them up, dress them down.

Do you have a picture of yourself wearing the necklace? I'd love to see how it looks in real life. There's people on the website wearing the necklace. I usually think of what I'll wear the next day, but frequently wake up and think, naw, not feeling it. Do you ever do that? Or do you really stick to your plan months at a time? Occasionally. I used to have a closet full of clothes with tags on them. Now when I buy something I enter it into my calendar once for the next 3 months to make sure I wear it. Plus I have no repeats at work for a month. I know I'm picking clothes for x month, so I'm not going to pick something inappropriate to the weather. I will also go and look at last year to remind myself of what I wear during x month and a few pieces that I forgot about will pop up.

Plus I have no repeats at work for a month. Gawd, I'm happy if I can get through a week without having to repeat! Except in summer I often do wear the same dress twice in one week.

Today I pre-entered until the end of the year. We have very different lives obviously I just can't imagine my clothing being so important or so high on my list of priorities that I would even want to plan that far ahead. Plus the weather here is too variable, plus I prefer to just get up and see what I fancy wearing depending on what I'm doing...I work part time and do all sorts of different things in a week. I'm not critisising, it's just fascinating when someone's normal is so different to your own.

A new coat sounds wonderful - do you know where you're going to shop? I love clothes but I've been stuck forever. I don't even know where to shop any more. I swear by Lands End for cashmere. I have two cardigans that never pilled. I hand wash them and lay flat to dry. I literally wore one out, so it has a couple holes, but I wear it around the house because it is so soft. I have also purchased a fabulous bright blue pea coat from Lands End. It's a super soft wool. My "go to" are the lightweight cardigans from Talbots. It's pretty much my work uniform. Cardi, top, and pants. Add a necklace or scarf and you are good to go. Now I need a berry cashmere cardigan...

I picked my basic neutral color palette--black, gray, navy and white--and then I pick accessories in accent colors I love.

I'm so glad to hear that they wear well.

I picked my basic neutral color palette--black, gray, navy and white--and then I pick accessories in accent colors I love. I like that approach too. I think what killed my original approach was buying tops in prints. They weren't anything special but I didn't wear jewelry or scarves so I guess I needed a little something. Sweaters are my love and the good ones are more expensive. The tops would lock out many of the sweaters I wanted. Your way would let you experiment with anything that caught your fancy.

Half of my wardrobe is bright pink. Another quarter is aqua. The rest is neutral/indigo. It makes life easier if I stick to a couple of colors I love. Most of my shoes also have bright pink on them this year. A few years ago they all had aqua somewhere on them. I'm in transition. A berry cardigan sounds lovely, if I could only find the right shade. I have a bright raspberry one. It's been the backbone of my wardrobe for a few seasons now. Like gar I am fascinated what other people's normal is, also not in a judge-y way, I hope. I, personally, would be failing at MY life if I had so many clothes that I didn't repeat an outfit for a month. My goal is to wear everything in my closet at least once every 7-10 days. If I wear a dress once a week for the summer season I wear it approximately 8-12 times a year. That's good value for money and resources for me if I buy my dresses from Goodwill (which I do, usually for $7-14). I keep most of my clothes for 2-5 years, so a lot of them only get worn 20-50 times in their lifetime with me. That seems low! (The average American apparently throws out a t-shirt after only 25 wears, which sounds absolutely terrible to me). A really good cardigan might get worn 15-20 times a month for about 8 months of the year, and then I feel like donating it after 2 years is totally fine. But I realize most people don't think that way at all. (Ever since I moved into a 1920 house I've been interested in how people in the 20s got by with ~9 outfits - that was back before advertising became a play on people's insecurities.) btw I'm always surprised when people compliment me on clothes and especially if they claim not to have seen an outfit before - but the truth is, most people don't really notice or remember all that much! I still get genuine compliments even re-wearing everything the way I do. Anyway, I agree OP that you should start with what you have and love and wear, and go with some bold choices that frame your face. No one cares if you wear the same black pants every single day, but a gorgeously colored/cut top or cardigan will make you look awesome. Also, DRESSES. You pull one loose comfy thing over your head and everyone thinks you have gone to so much trouble. I got so many compliments one day when I was feeling really crappy - I had literally pulled a dress over my head and slipped my feet into ankle boots. Maybe put on a pair of dangly earrings. If you have a couple of nice colorful dresses, a couple of cardigans that you can mix and match between the dresses (maybe stick to one color palette, or do what I do and wear hot pink with everything) and you'll look great.

I'm a total magpie when it comes to shopping, I don't plan outfits or wonder if something I'm buying will go with something else I already own. I just buy what I like and hope for the best!! Today I'm wearing distressed skinny jeans and the brightest yellow tunic style shirt you can imagine. I love bright colours and they look good on me (*puts down trumpet*) My most recent purchases were a pair of skinny combat trousers, a pinstripe pink shirt, a brick coloured faux suede jacket, a black and white collarless jacket with bead detailing (found for a fiver in the sales), a white and yellow short sleeved sweatshirt and a green and white scarf with shocking pink tassels. Totally random but they work in my wardrobe. And now everyone probably thinks I look a hot mess everyday

I buy what I like without much thought about what it will go with. I mostly shop at thrift stores so I'm never out much money if something doesn't get a lot of wear. I love combining dressier items with more casual things... dress pants with a print tee shirt and cardigan or jeans with a print tee shirts and a nice blazer. The print tees are pretty much always there. Shoes are usually oxfords or loafers, sometimes boots. Save
