I'm 53 and just got a call saying that there are some abnormalities on my PAP and I need to go in for an ECC and possibly a biopsy. The nurse was reassuring and said it needs to be checked out further but no cause for alarm, and the doc said in her notes that she'd like to see me within a month. My appointment is in 3 weeks. I'm pretty calm about it, but is there anything you can tell me to calm me further?
I still have periods that are mostly regular, starting to vary in cycle length. I don't remember what part of my cycle I had the PAP smear taken in, but I think it was right after a period.
So if you're a gyne. pro like Melissa or have had experience with this yourself, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks in advance!

I had abnormal papa before kids. They were deemed pre-cancerous so they'd observe and biopsy every 6 months. Then I started having babies and my paps were normal again.
I wouldn't worry too much yet. It could be something. It could be nothing.

(((Hugs))) and prayers
I had an abnormal Pap years ago and my follow-up Pap was fine.
Then this October it was abnormal again and the follow-up in May was also. I go in tomorrow for a colposcopy and biopsy. They told me when I made the appointment (it's not with my local PCP - but at a women's centre in the city) that many times they do the colposcopy and don't need a biopsy at all; sometimes they do the biopsy and remove all the abnormal cells and that the end of it; and less frequently, the biopsy will be concerning and additional treatment will be needed. Regardless - I think I'm in for more frequent pap smears for a while.

I had an abnormal pap with dysplastic cells (pre-cancerous). I had cryosurgery and haven't had a problem since. That was 20 years ago; I am now 49.

I had one when I was in my 20s. It was a yeast infection that cleared up with treatment. Don't panic yet--the wait is actually a good thing. That whatever they found isn't urgent. Hold onto that!

I've had a couple abnormal paps and then had to have a colposcopy done. I remember someone telling me that taking folic acid helped with abnormal paps.

I had an abnormal pap for the first time in March. The doc had me re-pap in June, and the second one was ok.

I hope your retest results are good. Both daughters had abnormal paps in the same month. They both were retested and all was well.

I had an abnormal pap when I was taking HRT (Premarin).......when I read the fine print on the papers that come with a Rx, it says that HRT can give abnormal pap smears. I got an OK repeat test, but after I quit that particular HRT, I had no problems.
