Thinking of a family trip...me, DH, and DD8.
Might ski, but not necessarily.
Bear in mind, we live in NC, and while it gets cold here, it's not typically frigid for any length of time.
Will we freeze our asses off?

Depends. Denver's weather is crazy. It could be below zero with a wind chill that's unbearable, or a comfortable temperature - or a blizzard. Just an FYI, you're a good couple hours from skiing in Denver.

We lived in Colorado Springs for 3 years. The weather in the area is crazy. The proverbial "if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes." Snow in the Denver area is generally wet and melts quickly. You could be in short sleeves or in parkas, but the next day could be completely different. We lived on the Air Force Academy at 7,500 feet. I had a friend go into labor and they had to pull her out on a sled to a main road to evacuate her to the hospital in a Humvee. That was in October. I had a baby in April and the tulips and daffodils were blooming and I brought her home in short sleeves.
Go for it! We often travel in off times and while the scenery may not be "perfect," the low crowds and cooler temps are what we love.

We'd only ski for a day, if that...DD is not keen on the idea

There are chain restrictions that may be in effect

Go for it! There is no way to know if you will freeze or not! I've worn flip-flops in Feb and also had years that we had 24 in of snow. Denver is great about snow removal from what I know, so it isn't like youd be stuck forever there if it did snow.
My kids weren't huge on skiing but they loved snow boarding. Maybe do some shopping?

Not sure as far as chains, though...we don't deal with those down here. Would that apply to all roads, or just higher elevations?

Although if you have 4wd and good tires, they don't make you have chains. It is for low tread tires

Chances are the weather will be fine in Feb. We get most of our snow closer to Easter! It really is hard to predict though. No joke, it could be in the 20's one day and 70's the next. It's nice to travel when it's not so busy. My son & I are leaving for NH next week I can't wait!

Getting to the ski areas could be difficult and it could be perfect weather. Tons of people do it though every weekend. Last February I was in Ft. Lauderdale and my husband was in Colorado and he was having better weather. You just never know. Most of our snows are not heavy and last for a few days. Denver is ready to plow and starts when the snow barely begins. You aren't crazy; you are adventurous.

I love CO in February. You never know what weather you'll get but it's just such a beautiful place. I love Boulder.

The average high is 45 degrees and low is 18. So you would only freeze for part of the day.
