No, not ME! GAH!
How shocking, sad, heartbreaking and, well, gross. The fact that they already have a 6 year old makes it all the more complicated. So...what would you do?

That must be heartbreaking for sure. And just plain weird! Do you think they look at each other differently now??

Shut Up!! I'm stunned just thinking about it.
Shocking, sad, heartbreaking and gross sums it up. I have no idea what I'd do in that situation. I can't even imagine.

I've always said to dh that this must happen more often than we think. With surrogacy, abandonment, adoption and blended families, it's almost impossible for this NOT to occur.

What a horrible thing to discover. I feel very bad for them. But, I understand them staying together too.

I can't imagine. I have no idea what I'd do. I would definitely try to keep it out of the press though.

How sad. I wonder why they made this so public - especially since they have a child. They would have been better off keeping quiet and going about their lives. Now that they know, hopefully they will take measures so they do not have more natural children.

I can't help but wonder if the whole thing was a set up. I hope it was! What are the odds that someone would marry their half sibling and find out about it on the radio? I know stranger things have happened, but it just seems suspicious. At the very least, I would want a DNA test to confirm the mother's story.

Why should they look at each other differently? They are husband and wife and there is nothing in them that says brother/sister.
If I were them, I'd go through genetic testing, one to check DNA to see if they really are related and one to be able to mitigate ant affects the genetic might have on their child or future children/grandchildren.
Other than that, I say they are no more brother and sister than they were two weeks ago.

It could be the couple next door, right?

Wow. I hope they (and their daughter) can continue to live normally, and that the press leaves them alone.
I wouldn't be surprised if more people didn't unknowingly date or conceive children with blood relatives that they don't know are relatives. What with sperm and egg donation, pregnancy resulting from one night stands where the paternity is uncertain, closed adoption, etc.... It just seems like it could happen.

Oh my god...that is just awful. I cannot imagine! But to me that's something that once you KNOW, you can't UNKNOW. I don't think I could stay together. I'd be too grossed out to ever kiss him again!

I don't think it would change Highfill about my husband, but I would probably take steps to make sure I had no more children. The child they already have needs a mother and a father in it's life.

However, after getting tested to be sure, it should definitely change their physical relationship. What an awful thing to find out & an awful way to find it out.

I agree, genetically it's an issue, but romantically it isn't relevant. They weren't raised together as siblings.

I am still thinking about this. how do I feel? Hmmm. I agree with those that said it's not like they were raised as brother and sister. THAT would freak me out and I would be grossed out. This would be a shock for sure, but not sure that they should feel pressured to no longer be together. I would, however, have no more children together, or at least not until having some genetic testing.

I can't say I'd be happy about it, but to me that would not change my emotional connection. They weren't raised together so there really isn't an "ick" factor to me. It's purely genetic. And I'm sure it happens more often than anyone would guess.

I feel sad for them. I'm sure it happens more often than we realize with all the adoptions, and things. That's great that they are staying together. Others may find it weird but we don't live their life and don't know the connection that they share. They also weren't raised together so who knows. I can't say what I would do because I have never been in the situation.

I had a case like this in child support. They were half siblings and had grown up together in the same neighborhood; however, neither of their respective mothers knew that the couple could have been siblings. The only reason they discovered this was that she opened a case and the DNA tests results were like: Ok, there's a 99.99% probability that x is the father of child A, and there was an addendum by the MD that said, by the way, person x and person y are half-siblings. The child was SEVERELY disabled.

Perhaps that's why they were drawn to each other - because they already had a connection (even though they didn't know about it).

How terrible for them! At this point, all they can do is keep a close eye on their daughter for genetic abnormalities and go on from there. Imagine the feelings they must have for their mother! I saw one of those.... Jerry Springer? Maury? (I have no idea...) shows where this was brought out as a possibility and both people nearly threw up on the stage. (They turned out to not be related.) It was one of the few and probably the last show of that ilk I ever watched.
