I have a Canon 60D and I upgraded from an Xsi. I love my camera, I don't mind the bulk most of the time, the few times I don't want to carry it I use our Lumix P&S. My husband has an amazing camera on his phone, I don't know what phone it is but you can zoom like crazy, it has a high MP count, and it is pretty quick shutter wise. He uses it quite a bit. I think the key to not hating carrying around the SLR is having a decent bag! That makes all the difference to me. When I first got my camera I had a crumpler bag that was really uncomfortable to carry, when I found a bag I loved it made it much easier to carry and now that I have a few different bags I don't find the camera cumbersome at all. If you don't mind which camera bag do you use now? I have a crumpler and another backpack/sling style and neither one are perfect. Luckily when carrying it all day my DH carries it but I would love to find one I don't mind carrying. I have a canon T4i and 17-55 f2 for walk around but am thinking I would love a canon 70D.

I am about ready to take the plunge and purchase a Nikon L830. I have a great Point-n-shoot, but I want a great zoom lens. DD is in the band, I want to get closer to her, not just a 'face in the crowd'. And I like to get closer shots of the birds at the bird feeder. And $200. is what I can afford.

I have a Cannon 5D Mark II. I love it for the pictures it takes, but it's a heavy camera! That's what I shoot with too and yes...they are heavy. I have a blackrapid strap that makes it easier to carry since the weight isn't just around the neck.
I had a t2i before I got this camera. There is a huge learning curve so it's not what I would suggest to a beginner. the t2i is a great entry level camera and I would suggest that one.

I recently got a Sony A58. This is my first DSLR (DSLT if you want to get technical). I love, love LOVE it! I have no clue what I'm doing, but have gotten amazing pictures with it already. I upgraded from a Canon point and shoot because I was not happy with the way it fired during my son's athletic events. The Sony is doing an admirable job of keeping up with all of those flying arms and legs so far.
I second the suggestion of going somewhere and actually holding the camera in your hands and 'playing' with it. The Sony just 'felt' better in my hands than the Nikon that I thought I had my heart set on. While the Sony was quite a bit more expensive, I know it was the right choice for me. The other thing I love about it is that Sony bought out Minolta, and I can use Minolta lenses on the body. This has helped me to get better lenses than the kit lenses for less $$$.
I went ahead and bought the Field Guide book and it has helpful in getting to know all the bells and whistles. I got a back pack camera case., and it holds everything so far. I like that I can have it slung over my shoulder and still have both hands free.
All that said, I'm sooo wanting the new Samsung phone...soon it will become my everyday camera for point and shoot opportunities.
Let us know what you go with!
Good Luck finding the perfect camera for YOU!

I just got a Nikon D7000 recently. I really like it, I just need to spend more time learning how to use it better. Today I decided to sit down and read the manual to it, but could only find the manual that I have in Spanish...which didn't do me much good. It takes wonderful photos, even though I don't really know what I'm doing with it.

The only reason I am buying another camera is for the ZOOM. It is a Want, not a Need. And for $200. that is pushing my budget, but do-able. My Mom left me her Canon Powershot and I still have my Fuji P&S. I just need to decide which memory card to get, then order the camera. I hope/plan to buy a RED one.

I have the Canon Powershot S95 for my p&s camera. I's small, light weight, you can shoot in RAW or jpg, Manual or Auto modes and has pop up flash too. Photos are very good straight out of the camera. I've had it several years. The newer one that replaces it is the Powershot S110.
