Dh and I haven't done this yet so we're clueless. DD (16) is having one next week. One day of liquids only then one day of clear liquids only along with the Ducolax and Miralax. Then the next morning we have to be at the hospital at 6:45 for the 7:45 am procedure. The extra fun part? She's a type 1 diabetic.
I'm waiting for the endocrinologist to call me back in regards to dealing with this and keeping her blood sugar steady.
My questions for you (I will call the GI doctor's office to confirm, I have the instructions in an email but I'm unclear on some things). It says Jello is allowed but at the bottom it says AVOID ANYTHING WITH RED DYE AND FOOD COLOR!!! I hope they mean RED dye and RED food color as I can't find any flavor of Jello without any food color. Assuming yellow or orange food color are ok, do you think that peach/apricot etc JELLY would be ok? The really smooth kind that you get that doesn't have any chunks at all? She can't eat regular yogurt as she has a lactose intolerance and Lactaid pills only sort of work though for some reason Lactaid milk is fine. I'm wondering if I can buy plain soy etc yogurt and mix in some jelly? All the non milk yogurts I'm finding have fruit chunks which won't work.
Also with the prep, um...it's an hour drive to the hospital, give or take with traffic which can be bad even that early. We'll be on a rural freeway with few/if any places to stop that early in the AM. Will she be all umm...cleaned out by that point or still needing a bathroom frequently? Should we get a hotel room close to the hospital?

My DH drank his prep with RED Powerade. They stopped the procedure to come out and ask me. NO red dye or red colored liquid. Not sure about the other drinks/food you have asked about.
In regard to the last question.....UM.... that is why I haven't done it. We are sort of in the same situation. Scares me to death thinking about the problems that could occur. DH was fine. I really need to get one scheduled. I'm am being foolish for putting it off.
ETA: Good luck to your DD!

I was definitely very, ummm, empty long before I got to the hospital for my procedure. You shouldn't need to stop frequently but I'd probably allow enough time for one stop just in case.
I hope the procedure is as easy as possible for your daughter!

I'm not sure how "cleaned out" she'll be with those laxatives. I had something (dang, can't remember the name of it) much stronger. If a pea hadn't warned me, I would have never known that the way my body was clearing itself was anywhere near normal. I sat on a chair steps from the toilet with a bunch of towels and a garbage bag under me in case I didn't make it in time. That lasted for a few hours, with about an hour of just plain sitting on the toilet. Again, your daughter is getting different meds, so I don't know what that would be like.
It was definitely NO dairy, just clear liquids. The stuff I had to drink was pretty gross tasting but I was told that mixing it up cold and drinking through a straw made it better.
I imagine the rules are different for diabetic patients. I would clarify with her endocrinologist, if you can.
Best of luck to your dear girl!

When I had my colonoscopy the reason they said you can't have anything red is because it could indicate blood when in fact it wasn't anything but the red in your drink/jello
I've had friends that have had once since ive had mine and their docs say it's ok to have anything red

On Tuesday it's a clear liquid diet (so no dairy) along with the meds and on the procedure is on Wednesday AM and nothing to eat/drink for three hours before, not even water. Ugh, can't wait to hear back from the endocrinologist on dealing with her blood sugar.

My doc had me do a mix of gatorade/miralax. No flavors with red dye in it. Since the red dye can be mistaken for blood staining. I was completely cleared out by the time to leave for the hospital, about an hour away like you are. I took a last trip to the toilet right before we left and then went again when we arrived but I wasn't desperate to go. I chose a frosted something... it was white. I think frosted cherry maybe. I liked the taste fine. The miralax made it a bit thick in texture but didn't alter the flavor.
She should be able to take her insulin as needed since it isn't processed through the stomach, intestines and into the colon. But do ask her doc to make sure.

I've always been told no reds. However, you should get clear guidelines from your gi. As for the hotel, I would recommend it. Everyone cleans out differently and sometimes you are still prepping in the early am. You don't want to risk it. Your endocrinologist will be able to ease your mind and help you w/the prep so that your dd doesn't have a blood sugar issue. Good luck to your dd and hope all is fine.

I've had a few medical procedures done with no food after midnight. The first was an amnio, where I was told no solids after midnight. We did not guess my reduced insulin needs and I went low on the drive to the hospital. I checked my levels at every light and was in the 50s when I got there. I'd called ahead, expecting a glucose drip, but they had me chugging apple juice, which they had ready when I got there.
Then the same when I was in labor, as I had a high risk of a c-section. I was admitted overnight each time and my BS was checked every hour. I did have a glucose drip then and they adjusted it throughout the 26 hour labor for #1 and the 53 hour labor for #2. I think they backed off on the long term insulin (I want to say I was using NPH back then), as it was easier to adjust levels with just the regular insulin on board. (Reminds me that insulin has gotten so much better!)
Your DD isn't the first to go through this, but her diabetes does complicate things. Don't let anyone brush that off. Find out what to do if she goes low and any special adjustments if she is high, as she won't have any protein in her system to stabilize her levels. Good luck! I'm guessing a lot of BS sticks are in her future, but hopefully some fun foods that she would normally avoid as well.
Best of luck to your DD.

I had mine in October of last year. I was told no foods or drinks that were red or purple. I live an hour away from where I was having the procedure and there was no problem. I was thoroughly cleaned out by then.

We couldn't do orange either, (if you think of the colour chart orange is red and yellow.)We could only have lemon and lime jello and yellow or green Gatorade type drinks. Ginger ale and black coffee or tea as well as clear broth ( chicken or veg)

I'm having mine next week - yay - on my anniversary - double yay!
I was told no red or purple at all - yellow/orange is fine. I have a liquid diet for 2 days and a clear liquid diet on day 3 with prep at 6pm and 3am (SO NOT looking forward to it) and the procedure at 8am. I'm a type 2 and I'm concerned about my BG numbers so I can imagine how stressed you are with your DD being type 1. Lots of blood checks for sure.

I have had three. All three day no red. I could have blue. when I looked at box, red was not listed. But if you look at Orange it is. I do a similar prep. I am surprised it is a day before not solids. Here is how I did it. Friday is C day! Saturday, last day for beef (I stopped pork too) no more corn Sunday-Monday Chechen /turkey and easy to digest food Tuesday. No dairy, fried egg, if it's whit it's right diet! No more turkey or chicken Weds again, small portions white!! Thursday, yellow and green gummy worms, chicken broth, Gatorade.
I was told to start prep around 5:00. I started around 3:00. I took magnesium citrate with orange Gatorade. (No red in that) and just guzzled. I started sooner so I could rest better at night. You will know she is done when it is clear. For me I had cramps with dulcolux, but they were don't pretty quick. Best of luck!!

I just had my colonoscopy on Monday and was given a liquid prep to mix with water in two separate time periods.
On the day before I had cereal with milk for breakfast. For lunch chicken bouillon and lime jello. I took the first dose of prep at 5 PM, and had a couple rounds with the bathroom. I took the second dose at 1AM in the morning, six hours before the procedure. I was pretty well emptied out in a couple of hours.
I arrived at the hospital at 6:30 AM and the procedure started at 7:30 and I was in recovery at 8:00. I was home by 9:30. The whole thing was much easier than I thought it was going to be.
Keeping good thoughts for your DD.

I'm actually having my 2nd colonoscopy on Friday, so I am well set to answer your questions. Red and purple dyes are to be avoided. As far as the jelly, what would she eat it on or with? It isn't a clear liquid, so it's no good for the day before. Generally speaking on a liquid diet it is something that has to be kept refrigerated or frozen in order to stay solid; that's not true of jelly. Other color dyes are okay, so orange or lemon flavored jello is okay. I'm surprised they want your daughter to do two days of liquids only; every prep I've seen is clear liquids only the day before the procedure, and a low fiber diet for a few days prior to that. If she's doing the Miralax/Gatorade prep and is drinking the entire solution the evening before, she shouldn't need to go to the bathroom the morning of the procedure; she should be all cleaned out by then. Are you sure it's Dulcolax? Stool softener? Not Bisacodyl, which is a stimulant? I just read about a study that showed the Miralax/Gatorade prep works best alone, without using pills. The pills are more likely to cause nausea, cramping and bloating. I was so glad to read this, because last time the bisacodyl tablets almost made me pass out due to the diarrhea. Here's a link to that study: prep. Just an FYI: Miralax DOES dissolve completely, but it takes a few minutes. So be sure to give it at least five minutes after mixing before having your daughter drink the first glass. It doesn't have a taste, but is a bit gritty if it hasn't had time to completely dissolve. And you can reassure your daughter that all she will taste is the Gatorade (you can mix the Miralax with any non-red or purple food dye clear liquid, but sports drinks are preferred in order to help replace electrolytes lost through the diarrhea). Hope this is helpful.

Oh I pray it goes well for your daughter!
I too have not done it (51 years old). I get a migraine, the shakes, etc., when I don't eat a snack every 3 hours. I don't know how I would make it through the prep. I had my physical last week so we are going the Cologuard route! So excited. If it comes back good, I can skip the colonoscopy for 3 years when we would repeat the Cologuard again. I believe that's what she told me. Anyway, thankful my doc offered me this option, and insurance has approved it.

I have had this done twice and the last one's prep was awful. I started drinking that nasty fluid around 4:00 p.m. and my procedure was for 8:45 that morning. We stopped 3 times before we got to the Dr. which was about 1/2 hour away and fortunately I thought to bring a couple extra pair of underwear. (I know this is TMI). Start earlier in the day or make the appointment later!!

I'm surprised that she has to do liquids the day before the prep. It was recommended to eat lightly the day before, but the liquids were for the day of. I had the gallon jug of stuff, started at 5pm, was done by 8:30pm (they wanted me to drink at least half - enough to make things clear - I think I had one glass more than half, but I could have stopped with half). I think I got up once in the night, but that was just to urinate. Didn't have any issues after that.

So, I resurrected this thread to see if there were any hints that would be helpful for me as I prep for my colonoscopy Friday. I will look at the booklet again, but I am pretty sure it said liquids only the day of the prep but it didn't say anything special about the day before the prep. Is it common to have special dietary guidelines the day before? Wondering what I should/shouldn't eat tomorrow.

No red or purple colored products. I am scheduled for a 6 am arrival. My directions say to start drinking the Golytely solution at 3 pm the day before. Drink 6-8 oz every 10-15 min until the solution is gone. The lady I talked to on the phone said that the solution is very salty and that I could mix it with lemonade dry mix, or anything that was clear to make it more palatable. I can not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the procedure. Since my procedure is in the early morning, they told me to take my morning medicines when I get home from the procedure. For me, this includes my BP medicine. It's been over 10 years since my last procedure and I do remember the solutions making me really, really ill feeling. As in throwing up ill. I could not get the whole amount of the solution down. I did get enough to get through the procedure okay. I am also a diabetic, but not on medication. I get a headache, dizzy and feel ill when I don't eat on schedule, especially protein. Tomorrow should be fun. Not.

I suggest eating easy to digest foods a couple to few days before your colonoscopy. Remember, whatever is still in your system is going to come out when you do the prep. For the few days before a colonoscopy, I eat fish, turkey, chicken, eggs, potatoes, white rice, crackers, pretzels, pudding, cooked veggies. I avoid foods like beef, beans, cheese and fresh veggies. I don't eat any fried food, either. A brat diet food is good (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). I don't find the clean out process to be anywhere near as burdensome as some on here describe so I think eating lighter food for a few days must help.

I did the magnesium citrate prep, and you can find dye-free solution. I drank water and had a lemon italian ice.
I did not do all liquids the day before and I cleaned up fine.
Be sure to have some vaseline around...you get a little tender down there from all the wiping.
The prep is definitely the worst part. The procedure itself is a breeze.
