So true. I guess that it was more dangerous back then, but it was fun!

Very true and we survived just fine. I think kids today are way too overprotected.

Go back a decade or two and see how molly-coddled the kids of the 70's were in comparison.

Oh yes! I lived through all of that, and the striped shirt and ugly colored pants of the kid in the bottom photo

I have a Jarts game! I found it at a yard sale and just had to have it! I admit we don't let the grandkids play with it, but we do bring it out at barbeques!

Yes. We had lawn jarts. I remember the lap belts in the car, and they always got stuck in the seat! And the monkey bars...the only concern was for us girls to wear shorts under our dresses so when we hung upside-down our undies didn't show! There was never anything soft underneath to lessen the impact if you fell. We survived (somehow)! Thanks for sharing this. I loved the pictures that went along with each "horror"!

The slide we had at the park in our neighborhood was pure molten metal in the summertime. It was a spiral slide as well, and we used to grab sheets of wax paper out of the drawer and sit on them to slide down. It made the slide really, really slick. Mom used to get really mad that we'd use all her wax paper in the summertime.

Ooh. That waxed paper idea was a good one. Wish we had thought of that!

I love Jarts. One of my siblings has the set from when we were kids and even has the box. We took great care of our stuff. The newer aka safer style just doesn't work as well. We were actually good about using suntan lotion.
That goat was eyeballing that kids crotch like he was looking for a snack.

And the metal gym sets. We had one at our elementary school that was shaped like an Apollo space ship. It was just rungs going all around it, getting smaller as you get higher. The top was open and it had poles in the middle that you could slide down. We would climb to the top and sit on the top rung watching the boys play basketball. Oh, those were the days! I loved growing up in the 70s!

I get a bit annoyed by these types of lists. On one hand I get the amusement and do think we sometimes get a bit crazy about some of this stuff, some go overboard etc. However there are safety legislations and precautions for a reason and some of them are very valid. Yes, those of us posting online and laughing about it survived. But there were many that did not and would have if their parents had known and done things the way they are done today. Or like my husband suffered from asthma and respiratory health problems as a child and still does. He was in and out of the hospital his whole first year with issues. I'm sure his mother's constant smoking didn't have anything to do with any of it.... Sorry to be a stick in the mud but that's how I feel.

I shall join you in the mud. I saw a guy get hit in the head with a lawn jart when I was a kid. Still makes me want to throw up.

The best was the playground...greasing up the slide with wax paper from our lunches so we'd go down faster...swinging up in the air and then jumping off...and the merry-go-round is one of my most cherished childhood memories. All those little kids clinging on for dear life as we went whipping around and around...good times. And I loved riding those animals on big springs.

I burnt my butt on many slides as a kid. Why did no one tell me about the wax paper making them slick back in the day?

I was already an adult in the 70s.... I used seatbelts religiously. We had them when my dad installed them before they were even required. And I probably wouldn't be here if it were not for the seatbelts I wore back in the 60s. My aunt and uncle were part of the beach crowd and California back in the 60s and 70s. They both have dealt with and are now dealing with melanoma. My neighbors perfectly healthy child was horribly brain-damaged when he was flung about in a car accident. So, yes, we had more freedom. But there are also some sacrifices there. We also had a time when every time you went to the doctor you got a shot of penicillin whether you had a bacterial infection or not. And septic tanks emptied straight into creeks rather than Leach fields. And shock therapy was treatment for depression. Everyone got chickenpox measles, two kinds, and mumps. And many of us have the scars from those diseases ......
Like others said, there are reasons for those changes.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that we go back to doing things the same way. I think the point is, that since no one knew any better back then it was a much more carefree time, and I admit there's a part of me that misses that. I do believe there is a happy medium though, between then and a lot of the "uptightness" (which may be the wrong word, but it's all I can think of) about things I see now.

And, we drank out of the hose. Granted, at that time our hoses probably were American made, not Made in China.

I am a child of the 70's, and we did all of that. Some funny stuff there. We had a fun childhood. On summer holidays we'd get up, eat cereal and leave the house on our bikes. Sometimes we came home for lunch, sometimes we didn't. Dinner was always at 5:30 and we had to be home. If you weren't your Mom would send one of your brothers or sister out to find you. Eat dinner, out the door again. We had to be home when the street lights came on. Every kid in town did. The lights would come on and we would all scatter .

I broke my collar bone a few weeks before starting kindergarten because my mom used to let us sit in the back of her station wagon.
This was in 1975.
We would sit in the back with our backs up against the rear door - she turned a corner, the door flew open and I flew out. I did a flew flips and ended up head planted it into the road. The neighbor girl fell out and eneded up with pretty bad road rash (and her parents never let her come anywhere with us again).
When my mom realized what happened she slammed on her breaks and my nephew (11 months younger than I) flew forward all the way into the front seat and landed on the floorboard of the passenger seat.
I started school with my arm in a big ol cast/brace thing but I was instantly famous for flying out of the back of my mom's car.
After that...we were forced to sit properly - I could have been the poster child for seat-belt laws!

Except only very rarely did my mom have to send one of my siblings out to find me. That woman could whistle so loudly and you'd hear it from anywhere in the neighborhood. Lol

And I loved riding those animals on big springs. Yes. I remember the thrill of excitement (and fear) when one of the older kids would spin the merry-go-round. They were stronger so it would go faster, and they didn't try to be safe and stuff...like a "dumb grown-up". (*said in the voice of a 7 year-old).
