It is amazing that any of us from that time frame survived haha. My dad installed seat belts before required because the military gave him some sort of financial incentive but not before i put my upper teeth through my bottom lip when my mom hit a bump. My favorite place to ride in a car was behind the middle front seat, standing. My husband's dad built a place in the back window of their car to place his baby sister for a road trip. Shudder at that thought.
My favorite playground equipment was the triple decker merry go round that we all fought to be king of the hill, as it spun quickly around OR hanging upside down on the bars of a lower merry go round as older kids spun it wildly. Those were the days but if I saw that now I would be completely freaking put.
I also remember being pushed out the door in the summer to do our own thing. We went to the neighborhood pool alone, something not even permitted these days nor would anyone consider doing. Road our bikes for hours, no helmets and barefoot. Played in creeks - alone. Ahhh, the good old days. On the plus side of that era, there were few overweight children because we didn't have the opportunity to become so with us physically playing hard all day. Now kids sit in houses playing on laptops, gaming devices, watching tv and eating so much junk food.

We ran wild when we were kids too...but I would not allow my grandchildren to do the same. With 462,567 children reported missing in 2013, the odds have just gotten way too high. Our world has changed too much. Missing Kids Key Facts

Thanks for sharing! I love the mom's shorts in the bike photo! I loved those too. And I believe she's wearing kitten heels with them as well.

I was a teenager and adult in the 70s, but I laughed at this because all of it was true in teh 60s too. I've seen these before and they do bring back memories of a more carefree time. Like when people called your house and got a busy signal or no answer instead of being able to reach you 24/7. Or the one where we drank from the garden hose and shared the same drink with all the neighbor kids and nobody got any diseases. Or the one where kids didn't all get trophies just for being on a teram - there were actual winners and losers. The Good Old Days!

My kids grew up in the 80's and 90's. They were allowed to roam our neighborhood but it was fairly small. I would not let my DGC do any of the things my kids did because things really have changed. Or maybe we just know about child abductions because of the media now and there were just as many back then.

Or maybe we just know about child abductions because of the media now and there were just as many back then. Studies show that they have increased dramatically. The experts point to our electronic age as being one of the reasons. Here are some statistics: State and local law enforcement agencies involved in Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces reported a 230 percent increase in the number of documented complaints of online enticement of children from 2004 to 2008.
ICAC Task Forces noted a more than 1,000 percent increase in complaints of child sex trafficking from 2004 to 2008.
As of June 2014, NCMEC’s Child Victim Identification Program has reviewed and analyzed more than 115 million child pornography images since it was created in 2002.I think the sickos were always there, but they didn't have such easy access to the child porn to feed their addiction, and easy access to private conversations with kids wasn't available. There was recently a book available for a while about how to entice a child to have sex. There was a lot of news coverage because the book was available on Amazon. Another thing I was thinking about is how such predators were handled "back in the day." My guess is that people like that were "taken care of" by the communities. The scenario is different, but my grandmother told me about an incident with my grandfather and his brothers. One of them had hit his new wife. The brothers found out, and took him out to the woods to teach him a lesson. He never hit his wife again. I'm thinking child predators would have gotten worse treatment. (and well deserved in my opinion) Sorry OP for the thread hijacking. Stepping down off my soapbox now.

And, we drank out of the hose. Granted, at that time our hoses probably were American made, not Made in China. ah, heck --- I'm supposed to stop drinking out of the hose?? I missed the memo.

My favorite dangerous playground equipment memory involves swings with the board seat. We would ride with one person sitting and one person standing with their feet on either side of the person sitting and facing that person. Both riders would pump until the swing was going as high as you could get it to go. Then the standing person would crouch down and yank the chains together which would cause the swing to spin. It would spin one direction until the chains were intertwined as high as they could go and then spin the other way to unwind and then intertwine going the other way. Great fun. Even more fun if there were another pair on the swing next to you because then you could also throw your weight toward each other for a kind of battle.
We used to do this during recess everyday and I would always come back in feeling a little queasy. For a second, I wondered what the teachers were thinking letting us do it but then I remembered that recess wasn't supervised back then. Today's kids are missing out. I really wanted to show DD how to do this but you can't do it on one of those butt scoop swings.

It's an odd thing, public perception.

As to your second question, I feel that the easy access to child porn has led to the increase against sex crimes against children.

I love it. Did all of those crazy things as a kid, plus: riding in the back of my grandfather's pick up with my cousins, taking off in the morning on my bike with my friends and not coming home till dinner time, taking the city bus downtown all alone, and more gasp-worthy things. The world has changed.

Heh. Love the kitten heels and Daisy Dukes on that mom My uncle is a radiologist and years ago he showed me an Xray of a lawn dart that had pierced someone's skull and was embedded in their brain. Yikes.

And it doesn't speak to an increase over time. And I'm asking for data. Not your feelings. The data on child porn is separate from child abductions.

I am a child of the 70's, and we did all of that. Some funny stuff there. We had a fun childhood. On summer holidays we'd get up, eat cereal and leave the house on our bikes. Sometimes we came home for lunch, sometimes we didn't. Dinner was always at 5:30 and we had to be home. If you weren't your Mom would send one of your brothers or sister out to find you. Eat dinner, out the door again. We had to be home when the street lights came on. Every kid in town did. The lights would come on and we would all scatter . ^^^^pretty much

I loved growing up in the 70's. We would ride our bikes to the lake, slather on the baby oil and lay in the sun all day long. I would always get blisters on my back. We used to use the waxed paper on the metal slide and then put on socks and slide down on our feet! We knew what time to go in for dinner when we saw our Dad drive by on the way home from work and then stayed out until the streetlights came on. We would stand up in the back of the convertible and let the wind whip our hair around. We rode bikes all over and if somebodys bike broke everyone would stop and help to fix it. We also made ramps to jump over out of all sorts of dangerous things.

Here's another one. Anyone remember clackers? They were great fun, right up until they flew off of the strings and knocked people out. Mom made us give ours up once it became known how dangerous they were. Clackers

If I had a dime for every time those handlebars on the big wheel spun around and knocked the wind out of me. Lol. I wish I still had my Hippity Hop. I rode that thing all over for hours. Can you imagine what good shape we'd be in if we did that now.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but the one they missed were real fireworks. I remember spending every July 4th at my grandparents' house setting off fireworks that you put in a tube and lit the fuse. They went up and exploded like small versions of what you see at professional shows now. We also had cherry bombs. And I swear the sparklers were brighter and lasted longer. I'm not sure I'd want to go back to those days. I know lots of people got injured. But they sure were fun!

The aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents would come over and dad would light the BBQ. It was a big red brick monstrosity that he built himself. We'd all enjoy some hotdogs and burgers and wait for it to get dark. Then the fun would begin. It's really a wonder no one got seriously injured back then. The closest we came was my brother and one of those ones you lit and it went flying all over the ground, hit the curb and bounced up into my brother and burned a hole in the middle of his shirt and burnt him in the stomach. No trip to the ER though, some ice and ointment and he was good to go. He still has the scar.
