My DD took all of my living room furniture to furnish her first house and I NEED new furniture. Im struggling with making a decision. My room is a blank slate with wood floors and white walls (although I am going to paint) i am leaning towards a sofa and two recliners. Ive spent a lot of time on Pinterest I thought I'd decided on a dark taupe sofa and chairs, but then started thinking that I don't need to be so "safe".

To my eye, those are really safe colors too. If you like them, that's great, but since you have such a blank slate to work with, you can consider doing something that's much more daring. I would use the old trick of starting with a piece of fabric or a painting/other art piece that I love and drawing my color scheme from that. I think the room's lighting and view out the windows plays a part too -- for example, our living room has floor to ceiling windows along one wall with a view of the heavily wooded green belt behind our house. Because the view is such a dominant element in the room, I generally avoid trying to call attention away from it, and just chose furnishings that work with the natural setting. Despite the big windows, it's a fairly dark room and benefits from some lighter colored furnishings, though nothing stark white.
If you share photos of your room, the peas with mad decor skills are more likely to chime in ; )

I tend to lean toward more neutral colors for furniture. Walls can be repainted, drapes and accessories can be changed but good quality furniture lasts a long time.

I prefer the big pieces to be neutral in both color and design. That way I can play with all the rest when I want to change it up. For me the neutral in design is really simple-no rolls, no fluffy, no skirts, etc. Of the three you pictured, I prefer the first one. It is still a little floofy for me, but it looks comfortable.

I would stay neutral with my furniture, and add in pillows and 'soft' items with a pattern and texture.

I would recommend going to pottery barn or basset and using their free design services. You don't have to buy everything from them and they are really helpful!

Make sure they are comfortable to actually sit on.

I would stay neutral on the furniture and get accent pillows and throws in trendier patterns or paint a bold color. Paint (assuming you do it yourself) is way cheaper than new furniture. Of what you posted, I like the middle chair with the nailhead trim. That said, blue is my favorite color, so I consider it a neutral. My next sofa will likely blue velvet! If you want to do something more daring, stick with a solid color and you can update it with trendier pillows as your taste or the "in" colors change.

I definitely agree with neutral on the furniture and add color with the accessories.

i think those are pretty safe, too. my current couches are red (i got them off of craigslist, so it wasn't a huge layout in case i didn't like having red couches.) i LOVE them! if you get blue/grey sofas/chairs, you can easily change up the look with your throws and pillows. the world doesn't need another beige sofa!

My personal preference is neutral furniture with colorful accessories that can be changed seasonally. All furniture in our family room is different shades of dark grey in various fabrics & leather. It is accented with gold, black, red, orange, pink, light blue, purple, or any combination throughout the year. HTH, & happy shopping!

I like the style and the colour of the blue one. I also like the style of the 3rd one. Not really a fan of the middle one.

I've looked all day and I'm exhausted and still no decisions! I think I want a blue or gray or tan sofa with chairs. I'm picky about fabric. Honestly, this is much harder than buying a car! Of course, it would be much easier if my budget was unlimited!

Tough to say without knowing anything else. Can you tell us about paint carpets or color of flooring?

I like the blue chair style and color best. It still would go with tan or gray walls. And easy to match colors. The only difference with the gray is it seems more formal so I guess it would depend on your overall feel for the room and the rest of your furniture?

I just bought myself a bright orange recliner and it looks great with all of my lime green accents. I don't like safe choices or beige on anything. I can see how you would love your red couch.

The trend right now is gray walls with a blue sofa and chairs. I like the blue chair on the left.
