Anyone ever have pain in the ball of your foot?
My DD (soccer player) started last week with some soreness in the joint area of her big toe. It then moved to the ball of her foot and became uncomfortable. By midway through first half of yesterday's soccer game, it was so painful she didn't play much because it hurt to run.
There's no bruising or swelling, but she's hurting! (I am calling the Dr. as soon as they open this morning to try to get her in). It could just be a use type injury and rest will help, but with so many little bones and so much "mechanics" in the foot, we would rather be safe than sorry!
Just wondering if any peas have had something like this and what it possibly could be??

At her age and with her activity, probably metatarsalgia. Ice, rest, OTC pain relievers if so. It could also be a stress fracture, in which case the treatment will be the same (possibly with a boot to help relieve the pressure of walking while it heals.) I don't think at her age it's going to be gout or arthritis, but your doc will figure that out because I ain't one!

I get metatarsalgia in my right foot whenever I run. The only thing that helps, somewhat, is good insoles with a metatarsal pad. New Balance makes awesome insoles for this, but they are pricey - $40 a set. They are worth every penny though.

Soccer cleats do not Have good support/padding do this may be beneficial to her

I was able to get an appointment this afternoon with the sports medicine foot specialist at the ortho, so hopefully we'll get it figured out!

I had that happen when I was in college and was told it was a stress fracture. No treatment other than rest and time. It got better, but every so often it would hurt again if I did a lot of running--it just didn't hurt as bad. Eventually went away for good. I think you're right to see a Dr. anyway.

Hopefully they figure it out. I just went through something similar to your description (although I'm much older than her lol) Doctor said it's due to 2 bone spurs I have, one on my heel, one on part of my Achilles.

Thanks all! Hope we get some answers.
Also, I know my child. And a doctor telling her she has to rest it, etc. will carry more weight than me telling her.
Hoping it's nothing serious, but better to find out for sure ASAP

It sounds like what my dd has right now. They did X-rays and nothing is broken. She was in a boot for 2 weeks to keep it immobile, but no improvement. So she's on crutches now. It's a little better, but not much better. They repeated the X-rays with still nothing showing as broken. I think an MRI is next.
I hope your DD's recovery is quick.

Yes, i can't remember the term but it was basically a pinched nerve between two bones. I got one of these ball of foot pads and wore if for a few weeks, especially during exercise. It went away and it hasn't come back. I did also realize i was lacing my shoes WAY too tight, and once i loosened up the laces a bunch i felt much better.

Glad you could get an appointment today. Let us know how it goes. Pains in the foot can be miserable.

I have pain in the ball of my feet when I wear certain shoes or do strenuous activity. I have found that for me, shoes make all of the difference on a daily basis. For awhile it hurt all the time and really limited what I was able to do. Now, I am careful about what shoes I wear and if an activity starts to make it worse, I stop doing that.

She has worn the same type of soccer cleats for 3-4 years so I'm not sure it's the shoes. She may need more support in them? And thanks to all for your comments. It sounds like it could be caused by any number of things. That's why I felt best to get her in to the doc ASAP and get it figured out.

Look up sesamoiditis. Or turf toe. That would be my guess or my transference as I've been dealing with it since Feb. Had no idea there were little bones in the ball of the foot.

Well, after a pretty thorough examination. And xrays of the injured foot AND the good foot - the good news is, the Dr. saw no signs of any type of fracture. Bones are good, joints are good, growth plates are good, etc.
Dr. asked my daughter if she could recall a specific incident where she landed funny on her toe or ball of foot, stubbed the toe, etc. but she could not. Honestly so much happens at soccer and if it isn't immediate pain, it probably just left her mind.
She says there is inflammation/irration around the seismoids. OTC Anti-inflammatories and a walking boot for two weeks, which has a pad in it to keep the weight off the ball of her foot (they first were going to give her a "surgical shoe" walking shoe but didn't have one to fit her so went with the boot instead).
Thanks for all the responses.
