Truly amazing - if you are in the DC area, this is a must do. We were lucky enough to snag tickets for opening weekend, and got through maybe a third of it last night. Lots and lots of crowds, but so worth it. I think that advance tickets are "sold out" through January but there should be some day passes available. Most of the museum is below ground and the lower levels chronicle the history of African Americans in this country from 1600 through modern day. Highlights included artifacts from a slave ship from the 1700s, a slave cabin, Harriet Tubman's bible and shawl from Queen Victoria, Emmet Till's casket (didn't see this), and so many more. We didn't even make it to the "culture" areas, but since we live here, will try to go back. Here are a few photos that I took yesterday.

This is on our list of places to visit the next time we're in DC. Probably won't be until next fall. I really want to see the Harriet Tubman display. I follow David Kennerly, a former White House photographer, on FB and he posted a great picture of Michelle Obama hugging George W. Bush at the opening ceremony for this museum. It was fantastic! I love this photo! I streamed the opening ceremony live, but could kick myself for not going down since I only live about a mile away. This museum is so thought provoking and well done. I can't wait to go back and spend more time absorbing everything.

We were watching the opening ceremony on television. Made me cry.
I've been wanting to get to DC for years and it keeps getting put off. *sigh*

I have been there. It's close enough that we could drive and spend the entire day. There is just never enough time.

I'm thinking about going to DC for my birthday weekend next month, and I would love to see this museum...but I think I might wait till the crowds die down a little!

I am so excited to go. One of our colleagues went to the soft opening and he told us about it for almost an hour. We were all quite rapt with attention at his description. We would like to let the hype die down just a little but still miss the rushes over MLK day and spring break weeks to go. My kid likes to look at every single display.

My DH and I talked about it over dinner after we got home and then I went to bed and couldn't stop thinking about it. I've never really had a museum (other than the Holocaust Museum) make such an impact on me. I'd say go when you get a chance!

I too am looking forward to going although since I live here I'm going to wait till I can go at a less busy time. I mean, I know it will always be busy but there will be a few down times. I have a friend who does IT for the Smithsonian, specifically this museum while it was being built and then the build-up to opening, so I'm counting on her to fill me in as to when the best time to go will be. I know, I know...I am very lucky to live here.

We saw it from the outside in May. The architecture alone is really appropriate and spectacular. I can't wait to see it when we visit again next spring. (DS lives just a few blocks away, lucky guy!)

I was down there Saturday when it opened! I didn't get to go in but it was so cool seeing all the people and the happenings going on outside. We went to the Natural History Museum and it was awesome!!

A fellow teacher and his family were able to snag tickets for this weekend and he loved it! I can't wait to go but I think I'll wait until the summer when I can go whenever (we're in the area--in MD) and hopefully not have it be too crowded. He said it was worth the wait! From the little I've seen through photos, it looks amazing!

Most of the D.C. museums are free - just wondering. No because it's part of the Smithsonian and those are all free. It's our tax dollars at work. Even the zoo is free (although you will pay to park) because it's part of the Smithsonian. I'm not sure though if you have to pay some sort of processing fee to reserve tickets online. I haven't ever done that so I don't know about that.
