A FAN!!!!!! the most important thing. ha. Kids used it all yr around, because of the heating/cooling system in the dorms, and just to circulate stale air. Otherwise, they really do NOT need the kitchen sink.

I gave my dd and her roommate a sewing kit and a first aid kit. Dd also has a flashlight. She's used her umbrella already.

My oldest will be a senior in high school, so I will be looking for ideas here! My neighbor's son is in college, so she will be giving me a list that she used for her son. She is very organized and so is her son!
I lived at home, so I didn't experience dorm living. My husband lived at school, and he saves everything, so he probably has his college list to share with the girls when they go to college.

Otherwise, they really do NOT need the kitchen sink. My girls used their fan daily. They also had terrible trouble with humidity in the older dorm. We requested from the nurse a dehumidifier, and it worked GREAT. They were able to keep it in their room all year long. We already have the request in for another dehumidifier to be placed in their room next week when they arrive.

duct tape might come in handy In school colors! Around here you can buy actual UVa (University of Virginia) duct tape. This is northern Virginia, and UVa is not here in the part of the state. My dd and all her friends, most of whom do not go to UVa, are always grumbling about how football reigns over everything. They think there should be a display with duct tape for all the state schools. lolol. The UVa friends say "is there a problem with this?" hahaha

I have a bag packed with things we will need on the first day but then will come back with us. Real tools, and some possible "let's try this, but not leave it" They also have to have clear garbage bags because recycling is mandatory Anyone have an opinion about steamer vs. iron? I have boys, so my opinion is neither...get Downey Wrinkle Release instead. LOL Really? He irons at least once a week now- And they are suppose to have at least one suit before they get there. Dress shirts need to be ironed or sent out to be laundered. Ironing boards take up space so I was thinking steamer but he hasn't used one before

Very few items need ironing, and the Downey will be just fine for his needs. Honestly though, I use the stuff here at home also. I rarely have to iron much either.

You can buy a small ironing board that doesn't have legs, that can be laid on top of something or even right on the floor. I asked my dd if she ever thought she'd need an iron at college, since she wouldn't even know how to turn on an iron. She said "um...." lol. I also asked her if any of the boys she knew owned a suit there at school. She said "not that I've ever seen". Different schools have different cultures.

Before buying much in the way of cleaning supplies, check with the school. My daughter's college had paid people who cleaned the shared bathrooms on the dorm floors.

I would think all schools require a suit for athletes on game day. Other than that, I have no idea why one would need a suit unless they are taking part in a co-op program where they will be working in a suit-wearing environment.

I had an iron for college and in my 4 1/2 years of college maybe used it twice. Not worth it! And a lot of dorms have irons or ironing boards you can check out from the front desks. Same thing with vacuums. We were always able to use the one at the front desk. Also we were able to get our garbage bags from the front desk whenever we needed them so check that out!
Coordinate with roommate and check with school about tv, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, etc before buying anything! Most dorms have at least a mini fridge.
Definitely: Shower shoes Shower caddy Robe or big towel Basic medicine kit - Advil, midol, day/night cold meds, band aids, neosporin Area rug for the floor if no carpet ( or even if carpet ) Bed loft to make room for a couch, couple of chairs or futon underneath. Having 2 lofts in the room is great for a seating are under one and tv, fridge, storage under the other. Basically doubles the space in the room and prevents visitors from using your bed as a couch. White board for the outside door for messages Power strips Extra jump drive for double back up on papers...ask me how I learned that! Though we used 3-1/2 discs in my day! Gift card to Walmart/target or local grocery store if there is one close or a bus route to bring them. It was always nice to get off campus for a bit to pick up snacks or things I needed As for dishes, really no need for more than 1 plate, bowl, set of silverware and a couple cups. In my day we always seemed to have a full set of Whitney Hall (our dining hall) dishes by the end of the year including trays which may or may not have been used for sledding down the small hill on campus! It's tradition! Paper towels, multi surface cleaner, Lysol wipes 2 sets of sheets Mattress pad and foam topper
My dorms had a set up with desks and bookshelves above desks by the window. We were able to get a 12 ft board from Menards to span the room for an extra shelf we used it for dishes, food, books, etc. was great extra storage and super cheap. We just put it on top of the book cases.
Don't overpack. Unless the school is in the middle of nowhere, you can buy anything you may decide you need once you see the room and get things moved in. And like someone said, Amazon only takes a couple days to deliver as a worst case scenario!!!

Small fan.
Gift cards for late night munchies, pizza, etc.
