What's the one item I might not be thinking of? I saw a post on the residence Facebook page about a flashlight or a screwdriver, but I knew the Peas would be a better resource! TIA!

I gave my niece a pink tool bag with tools, flashlight, Command strips to hang things (in case they aren't allowed to use nails), tape, things like that.

First aid kit and sewing kit. (The sewing kit doesn't have to be complicated: a pack of needles, black and white thread, a scissors, and some of the hem glue.)
Cell phone charger.

First aid kit, including her favored stomach remedy, cold remedy, pain relief and allergy meds. power strip The slimline hangers worked well for my dd, that and the hangers that can hold multiple pairs of pants or shirts find out if they need coins for laundry or if they use a card ( more and more common these days). If coins a bag of quarters. We had a "magic" bad that refilled with quarters when she brought it home. laundry detergent, fabric softener

Make her a junk-drawer box. Look in your junk drawer and copy all the useful stuff that is there but that you wouldn't think of until you needed it. Scotch tape, batteries, push pins, electrical tape, paper clips, binder clips, loose change, measuring tape, small sewing kit... well, that's what's in mine, and the kind of stuff I put in a junk box when I gave one for a bridal shower gift. Great idea for newlyweds or newly-away-from-home!

Some sort of soft/comfort item from her room...a special cushion or small blanket or even a cozy pair of fluffy socks for days when she's slightly under par or off-colour. Extension cable. Laundry bin of some sort.

Color catchers for laundry. My girls don't like to sort laundry. They like to dump and do one load. Color catchers are GREAT for that!

Well, my living room at the moment is full of dd's stuff as she gets ready for her second year. She's not done yet so maybe what she has out there now are the most important things? No idea, but here's what's there already: -- the "junk drawer" box that someone mentioned above -- hers is already packed up because she brought it home last year, so we went through it when she got home and replenished things (batteries, duct tape, a missing screwdriver -- "oh yeah Mom, so-and-so borrowed that because she couldn't get her hutch together") and then stashed it under her bed ready for this year. -- bedding -- two sets of sheets (because both coordinated perfectly with her new comforter ), comforter, pillow cases, two pillows -- armchair pillow -- mini-fridge -- microwave -- mini Keurig (priorities you know ) -- trash can -- text books (rented from Chegg) -- first aid/health kit (also replenished when she came home for the summer) -- cold medicine, Advil, bandaids, etc., etc. -- a box of office/school supplies -- including the usual (pens, pencils, etc.), also command hooks, mini clothespins (the girls use these for attaching photos to a ribbon that they string across the walls), ribbon. -- her favorite spiral notebooks (Staples) -- some food items -- oatmeal, mac and cheese, applesauce, coffee (the only thing in town besides CVS and other small stores and a disgusting Food Lion, is a Walmart, and the LAST thing I want to do is go to Walmart on college move-in day. ) -- three plastic bins that will go under her bed. -- bed risers -- hangers -- one of those shelving units that has the cube-shaped compartments (like the Ikea one only this is cheap from Target, and smaller) and canvas bins to fit in the shelves -- hanging shoe holder for the closet, hanging sweater holder also for the closet -- laundry detergent, laundry bag Missing but to come: -- desk hutch (still on her desk here at home) -- clothes (lol) -- some warm clothes since cold weather will most likely arrive before she's home for their first break -- all the electronic stuff Believe it or not she and her roommate manage to fit into one room.

You've got some great ideas - all I know is we overpacked for her first year and alot of things came home at Christmas Break that she just didn't have room for! Her essentials were a can opener, a few sets of silverware and a big mug to heat up soup, etc.

The first aid kit was the one thing we forgot freshman year. There's nothing more pathetic than a miserable sick kid calling you from the school store asking what kind of medicine she should buy, and having to read you the labels on everything because she had no idea what any of them were.

I have a bag packed with things we will need on the first day but then will come back with us.
Real tools, and some possible "let's try this, but not leave it"
They also have to have clear garbage bags because recycling is mandatory
Anyone have an opinion about steamer vs. iron?

Check the dorms rules regarding coffee pots, microwaves, etc. Not all places allow them in the rooms.

I made up a little collection of the basic Benadryl, Ibuprofen, eye drops, cold medicine, etc that I knew my girls would be overwhelmed buying...especially when they weren't feeling well to begin with.
Other than that my DH kept saying "they aren't going to a third world country-buy it when we get there!" He really was right. Then we didn't have to pack a ton of stuff or containers that would actually fit in the itty bitty spot it needed to, etc.

Anyone have an opinion about steamer vs. iron? My daughter uses neither. And she pretty much shoves all her clothes into the washer together, and everything into the dryer. I'm not sure she even folds them, let alone iron or steam.

Unless your child is moving to a college that is really far away? Go with the "less is more" approach. In part due to my not wanting to face her leaving, I kinda ignored the whole college list/prep mode when my daughter went off to her first year of college two years ago. We did eventually get it together but I found myself saying to her "let's wait until you've been there a few days" with regards to buying certain items. In the end, she took far less than most of her fellow freshman and found she didn't need nearly anything we decided to hold off on. She was only 90 minutes away and Amazon carries practically everything, with next day delivery if absolutely necessary. She's going into her junior year this fall and has come to appreciate the less is approach I started (by accident) from the start. The [HASH]1 thing she said was absolutely "can't-live-without" was building her a portable medicine chest. I thought of anything and everything that one would normally have at home. Nothing is worse than being sick and not having the OTC product you're used to having available. And who wants to (or can) drag their sick self to the pharmacy/store? She said she was the saving grace for many of her dorm mates because of her box

Rubber mallet. Duck tape. WD-40. Sewing kit. Gift cards for local restaurants. Small lock box with a combination lock (you keep the combo as well). Thank you cards and stamps. Well stocked medicine box.
AND PLEASE DONT FORGET to have your kids sign a HIPPA release AND Power of attorney for Health Care form.

Thank you! Thank you! This has been so helpful!
This kind of snuck up on me. I knew we would have to pack for her, but I just kept thinking about clothes and bedding. Then when we were looking for photos of the residence on line and we found this list, I realized it was a lot more than clothes!! Perhaps I'm in a bit of denial that she is leaving in only a few weeks.
Anyway, thanks again for all the help. My shopping list has grown substantially. Off to the dollar store now!

Depending upon how far she is going, BedBath &Beyond has a program where you order the items needed and then pick them up at the store closest to her school

We did not get the iron, coffee pot, or microwave. Those are not items my girls use. But the above were important for all 3 of my girls! And make sure you check amazon for the memory foam topper. We were able to get them 50% cheaper than other places.

Does her dorm room have a bathroom in it? Then bathroom cleaner and a toilet brush. Our dorms were two people in one room who shared a bathroom.
